3 March 10, 2019 FROM THE PASTOR S CORNER 1 st Sunday of Lent, Year C The Temptations of Jesus Avoiding temptation is a wise and noble thing to do. However, to think that one could be immune to temptation is not only foolish but impossible. Hence, Christian life is lived within the tension or struggle between avoiding and facing temptation. Scott Higgins tells the story of a mid 1990 s movie titled the Devil s Advocate. It was released starring Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. Keanu plays Kevin Lomax, a happily married and very successful lawyer in America s South. Down in the South he s a man of integrity who s focused on what s important in life. Then he s offered a job in the Big Apple, New York, with a world-wide law firm. Kevin and his wife move to New York only to find Kevin being seduced by the atmosphere of greed, sex and power that surrounds the firm, and more particularly its owner, John Milton, played by Al Pacino. But we soon discover that there is more to this movie than the age old theme of greed versus goodness. The plot is much more sinister. It turns out that John Milton is in fact the Devil, a devil who has learned to despise God and embrace self satisfaction. During the movie the Devil lets us in on his plan to seduce humanity. You sharpen the human appetite to the point where it can split atoms with its desire; you build egos the size of cathedrals; fiber-optically connect the world to every eager impulse; grease even the dullest dreams with these dollar-green, gold-plated fantasies, until every human becomes an aspiring emperor, becomes his own God And as we re straddling from one deal to the next, who s got his eye on the planet, as the air thickens, the water sours, and even the bees honey takes on the metallic taste of radioactivity? And it just keeps coming, faster and faster. There s no chance to think, to prepare; it buys futures, sells futures, when there is no future! Look at me cries the Devil, underestimated from Day One! You d never think I was a master of the universe, now, would you? I m a surprise, Kevin. They don t see me coming: that s what you re missing. This story is nothing but a replay of the story of the temptation of Jesus. And come to think of it, it is no longer about Jesus but about us. It is the story of human predicament the blessings and the challenges that daily confronts every human person living in the world. After Jesus was baptized at Jordan River, the voice from heaven declared him the beloved Son of God. The devil now knows about that and would stop at nothing from bringing Him down. It is interesting to note that Jesus, being the only begotten Son of God was still prone to temptation. It is true that no one prays for temptation, but if Jesus was not immune to temptation then it will be foolhardy for any human being to think that he could completely avoid being tempted at some point in life. The good news is that temptation per se is not a sin. Temptation is neither good nor bad. It is a reality that we must face at some moments in life. Every temptation could make or mar us as it presents an opportunity to excel and rise to greatness or fall and degenerate into sin. Hence, temptation is rooted in the choices we make. Jesus in today s Gospel shows us how to handle our own moments of temptation. To be a Christian is to be like Christ to walk, talk, live, think, see and act like Christ. In moments of temptation, it is important that we remember what Jesus did in the Gospel today when He was confronted by the Devil in the desert. Recall that Jesus has fasted for forty days and forty nights in preparation for His public ministry. The task of announcing the reign of the kingdom of God is a task that could only be done through prayer and fasting. Before Jesus could embrace this task, like the people of Israel before they could enter the promised land had to conquer the great wall of Jericho, Jesus needs to conquer the great power of Satan in the world. It is possible to live in the world like cats and dogs work, eat, walk and sleep, without facing temptation. Human life is a call to holiness. To live a holy life is a huge task that can only be realized through good works, prayer and fasting. Like Jesus, Christians in their effort to embrace the ways of the kingdom of God must be ready to face temptation and any effort to overcome temptations must be rooted in Jesus way of overcoming temptation. The temptations of Jesus remain our own temptation. We have at times felt God as a loving father and have sometimes felt some desolation and abandonment in our spiritual journey. Be it when we lack food to satisfy our hunger or when we lack power and are not in control of situations in our life or when we long for some excitement in our life and are ignored and not respected, these are temptation moments that cannot be ignored. To overcome temptation demands that we have a personal relationship with God. We must believe that God is not just an idea in the sky but a Person real and present in our life. God wants to be in a relationship with me and I am willing and happy to be in a relationship with God. Our relationship with God must be in the present moment of our lives, loving and warm, not lukewarm and cold. Worshiping the Devil is never an option to be given any consideration. Our lives must be rooted in God and God alone. Even when we think that we cannot see the face of God, we must hold fast and believe that God is there for us. At all times we must have an honest desire to do the will of God and not to offend God. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and its righteousness and every other thing shall be added unto you. In comparison with the kingdom of God and the salvation of our souls, earthly kingdom count for nothing. As Jesus rejected the empty promises of the Devil to grant Him earthy wealth, powers and recognition so should the children of God reject the lure of wealth and power. It is only by so doing that we shall be ready to die with Jesus Christ as to rise with Him on Easter Sunday.

These workshops aim to address several aspects of mental health. We are happy to now be able to present the sessions in English as well. The English sessions will begin Thursday. March 14th. 6 ALL SOULS CATHOLIC CHURCH ORACIÓN, LIMOSNA, AYUNO Y TENTACIÓN A medida que empezamos nuestro tiempo de oración, limosna y ayuno, la lectura del libro del Deuteronomio nos recuerda nuestro deber de ofrecer: Dejarás los frutos en la presencia del Señor tu Dios, te postrarás ante él (Deuteronomio 26:10). La lectura de la carta a los romanos nos refiere a nuestra oración, recordándonos que La palabra está cerca de ti, en tu boca y en tu corazón... todo el que invoque el nombre del Señor se salvará (Romanos 10:8, 13). Estas palabras son reconfortantes, y nos animan a pedir a Dios aquello que necesitamos y nos ayuda en nuestra oración. Por último, el Evangelio de Lucas nos muestra a Jesús ayunando, siendo tentado así como lo somos nosotros y además él entiendo lo que significa ser humano. Alguien una vez dijo que la tentación surge cuando se está cansado y rendido; y el mal viene y hace una sugerencia perfectamente razonable. Jesús no muestra que, con su ayuda, nosotros también podemos vencer nuestras tentaciones, tan razonable como pueda sonar. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. A través de este programa, los adultos capacitados aprenden cómo evitar que ocurra el abuso, implementando medidas de prevención como evitar que un adulto y un joven pasen empo a solas. La creación de una cultura de apertura y transparencia contribuye en gran medida a aliviar las preocupaciones sobre el comportamiento inapropiado de los adultos y ayuda a los niños a sen rse seguros en su entorno. The spaghetti meal will be served directly following the Mass and will continue to be served until 8 pm. We thank you for your generosity.
