The Promotors are trained by the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. These workshops will focus on prevention and early interventions related to mental health for adults. The sessions are free and will take place on Mondays and Thursdays starting at 6:30pm. 3 January 13, 2019 FROM THE PASTOR S CORNER Year C - The Bap sm of the Lord During my pilgrimage to the Holy Land I was privileged to visit the River Jordan to pray and perform the tradi onal renewal of our bap smal promise. The sight of River Jordan was not as pleasant as I would have loved it to be. The thought that arose in my mind is to wonder why of all the rivers in Israel, Jesus chose to be bap- zed at river Jordan? To say the least, the water looks brownish like a pond water. The river is shallow with a lot of grass and sea weed. I wouldn t consider the water good enough for drinking yet Jesus chose to be bap zed at river Jordan. A er the tradi onal renewal of bap sm and wishing to have a memento for remembrance I filled a plas c bo le with river Jordan water. To my greatest surprise a er a day the brownish water becomes as clear a spring water. It dawned on that the dirty looks of the water of River Jordan represents a humanity made dirty by sin. Jesus going into the river to be bap zed brings God s cleansing power to it and all who believe are made clean again by the presence of Jesus in their lives. In the ordinary sense of the term - bap sm is the sacrament that washes away original sin and any personal sin in our lives, gives us the grace of God and makes us members of the church. Jesus did not need to be bap zed since He is the bego en son of God. However, Jesus gets bap zed because it is to fulfill all righteousness. By virtue of his Bap sm, Jesus shows us the way to follow to reach eternal life. In the earliest tradi onal of the church people have mostly been bap zed in their childhood. This is why bap sm is one of the sacraments of ini a on. In bap sm we begin our process of ini a on into the mystery of our salva on and we are encouraged in the course of our lives to grow in it and allow it to bear fruits of good work. It is by virtue of our bap sm that we assume the threefold character of becoming priests, prophets and kings. As priests, we share in the universal priesthood of Jesus and are called to become missionaries wherever we find ourselves. We are always encouraged to support the work of missionaries through financial support and prayers. Are we s ll a missionary church in the world today? As prophets we are called to promote and defend peace and jus ce especially in mes of oppression and injus ce. It is this prophe c dimension of the church that sets us apart as the light of the world and the salt of earth. As kings, we are called to reign and manifest the beauty of God in our lives and in the world. Like Jesus we are called to serve and to live lives that are a fi ng obla on to God. The gi of bap sm, therefore, is the best gi anyone could receive in life. It prepares us not only to live a good life in world but mostly for eternal life in the world to come. As bap zed Chris ans we are reminded that we are no longer alone in this world. We form an integral part of the trinity in unity, called to share a life of grace in the world. The feast of the bap sm of the Lord marks the end of the Christmas season. A er all masses this Sunday we shall take down the Christmas decora ons and begin the first part of the ordinary season leading to the Lenten season. The power and glory of our bap sm lives on in each and every one us un l death do us part.

6 All Souls Catholic Church 13 de enero del 2019 NOTICIAS PARROQUIALES LLAMADOS A SERVIR Por muchas semanas hemos celebrado la aparición de la presencia divina en su forma humana. Cuando era niño, Jesús vivió con María y José, al nacer lo visitaron unos pastores y luego algunos errantes magos de Oriente. Hoy celebramos otra situación, ocurrida un tiempo después, a un grupo reunido en el río Jordán. Juan vaciló cuando le tocó bautizar a Jesús, a quien reconocía como uno más poderoso que yo. Pero hizo como Jesús se lo pidió, descendió el Espíritu Santo y una voz celestial habló a Jesús: Tú eres mi hijo, el predilecto. Jesús estaba empezando su vida pública de enseñanza y de servicio. Pronto comenzaría a llamar a otros a seguirlo. Pedro fue el primero que Jesús llamó. En la segunda lectura de hoy anuncia el centro del mensaje: la paz que traería Jesucristo, el Señor de todos.
