Craig French to our pulpit. Most Sundays you'll find Craig in the choir, trying not to mess up the anthem. That's also his goal for today's worship service and sermon. He and his wife, Barbara, are on their second tour of duty raising teens and pre-teens. They are blessed beyond measure by that, despite the occasional flashbacks and night terrors. Liz Pruchnicki and Quinn Caldwell are away on retreat with the confirmation class this weekend. Welcoming C hildren in Worship: C hildren of all ages have a place in worship and in the life of the church. N ursery care is offered at 10:00 am for infants. Sound is piped into M emorial H all next door to the Sanctuary for those who would welcome a space apart. Worship C lipboards: Worship clipboards with age-appropriate bulletins and coloring paper are available in the back of the Sanctuary for our elementary aged children as a support to their attendance in worship. 4 There is ample free street parking on the blocks around our church on Sundays, as well as in the lots behind the C atholic diocese building. For those able to walk a short distance, parking here will allow those with mobility impairments or small children to use the spots directly in front of the church. M usic N otes for J une 11, 2017 H ow many people does it take to perform a trio sonata? That s a trick question I give to my music history students and the answer is not what you think: either 4 or 1. There are three parts to a trio sonata (and I m playing two movements of trio sonatas today because it s Trinity Sunday. G et it!?): two solo soprano parts (most commonly played by violins), and the continuo which consists of a bass part (usually a cello) and a keyboard part that doubles the cello part and also plays improvised chords above it (a lute, harpsichord, and/or organ.) Although Trio Sonatas were invented in the mid-baroque (around 1700) by C orelli and his friends in Italy, it is interesting that the basic function of the players in a trio sonata continues today in the rock band, where the two soloists are the singer and lead guitar, and the continuo is played by the bass guitar, the rhythm guitar and the drum set. O h, but how can a trio sonata be played by just one person? The answer is: on the organ, where the organist plays the two solo parts with the hands and the bass part with the feet. O ur prelude is from J ohann Sebastian Bach s ( ) collection of six trio sonatas written expressly for the organ. O ur postlude is a movement from one of the forty-eight trio sonatas written by Arcangelo C orelli ( ). In addition to inventing the trio sonata, C orelli was the first composer and performer to explore the possibilities of the relatively new instrument, the violin. (H e lived at the same time as the famous violin-makers Amati, Stradivarius and G uarnerius.) O f course, our postlude was originally intended for strings, but I ll be playing it on the organ; trio sonatas are flexible that way! O ur anthem is by M ark Schweizer (b. 1956), who is the editor of St. J ames Press (where we buy a lot of our anthems) as well as the author of a dozen murder mysteries that take place in church choirs! The text is by Beverly Easterling: Holy God, and Savior Son, blessed Spirit, three in one. Undivided mystery; author of eternity. Loving God, anointed Son, Eternal Spirit, three in one. Word incarnate, well beloved, Heavenly king and Lord of love. Mighty God, Redeeming Son, Creator Spirit, three in one. As the sacred Trinity, Alpha and Omega be. O ur offertory anthem is a canon (round) in three voices: We the Lord s people, heart and voice uniting, praise God who called us out of darkness, Light and truth revealing. Bring we now before God all our gladness and joy. O God, Creator, Son and Holy Spirit, Trinity blessed, heavenly light, the source of our salvation. Shine forth in our living now and ever. Amen.
