A NOTE ABOUT WORSHIP We believe that Jesus is the Savior of all. By his life, death, and resurrection Jesus saves all sinners simply because he loves us. That is called the gospel, and it s the good news on every page of God s Word. Therefore, the Bible is not just information about God or rules from God, but the saving power God uses to create and strengthen faith in our hearts and restore our lives. utheran worship places this good news at the center of the worship service with an order called liturgy. In both the Word and sacrament (God s Means of Grace), in specifically selected Scripture readings, and in carefully crafted and often ancient songs, prayers, and creeds, the liturgy proclaims the good news of Jesus from start to finish. utheran worship is also designed to include the participation of the entire assembly (including children). He didn t set out to change the way people viewed authority, education, science, or religion. He simply used the truth of God s Word. If anyone, no matter how powerful, tried to silence the voice of God, then uther was ready to face them with the power of God s Word at all costs. That is our utheran legacy. It doesn t mean we are disciples of Martin uther, but rather we are built on the truth of hrist no matter what. If it s not popular, if it s not logical, and if it s not easy, it doesn t matter. As we study our utheran legacy, clear biblical truth is the priority and always will be. This week, we move into a new direction. For the past 7 weeks, we have studied what God does for us. Now, our focus shifts to what his gracious love motivates us to do for him. We make sure to keep God s grace and his gospel at the heart of our work for him, because failure to do so leads people to a worksbased understanding of salvation, which the Bible does not teach. Instead, God teaches us to live in the light of the gospel. That includes the hristian home. Spouses, parents, and children, carry out their callings with the forgiveness Jesus has won and with the love God has planted in their hearts. In a world where the structure of the home is under attack, this kind of home will be blessed and will be a blessing. Keep us in your Word that these blessings will also flow from our lives within in the homes that you establish. Give spouses, parents, and children your Spirit so that they willingly and humbly serve you and one another, through Jesus hrist, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 4 Morning Praise This worship order is based on the historic service from monastic communities long ago, where monks and clergy would gather for this abridged service to begin their day. The opening hymn is an ancient song of praise, hriste Sanctorum, written by Gregory the Great in the 6th century A.D., and it reflects the legacy that historic hristianity has left for the hurch today. FIRST READING Deuteronomy 6:1-9 6:1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the ord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the ord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the ord, the God of your ancestors, promised you. 4 Hear, O Israel: The ord our God, the ord is one. 5 ove the ord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. God gives his commands and his care to families so that we will use them regularly. GOSPE Matthew 19:1-15 He left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. 2 arge crowds followed him, and he healed them there. 3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason? 4 Haven t you read, he replied, that at the beginning the reator made them male and female, v 5 and said, For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate. 7 Why then, they asked, did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away? 8 Jesus replied, Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another woman commits adultery. 10 The disciples said to him, If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry. 6

7 11 Jesus replied, Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. 12 For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it. 13 Then people brought little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked them. 14 Jesus said, et the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. 15 When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there. You reconciled us to God bringing us back into his eternal family. et us always reflect this love and forgiveness in our homes. To do all things according to your good and gracious will, we pray, O ord: hrist, have mercy.
