Pastor A. J. Kluver Office: 324 Broadway St., Suite 209 LUTHERAN CHURCH, LCMC Worshiping at Holiday Inn 5637 Hwy 29 South, Alexandria, MN Through the power of the Holy Spirit we are growing, sharing, and living in God s Word, Jesus Christ pastorlwlc@gctel.net; secretarylwlc@gctel.net May, Brothers and Sisters in Christ- Yes, spring is finally here!! It was a long time coming but I m pretty sure it is here to stay! Speaking of here to stay I hope you had an opportunity to go to the building site April 21 st and write your favorite Bible verse or two or three on the studs and walls of the building, what a wonderful experience. We are here to stay standing firm on the authority of God s Word built on the cornerstone of Jesus Christ not shrinking from our call to proclaim repentance and the forgiveness of sins through Him and stepping up to the mission of Christ we have been given in the face of a complacent, dying, wayward church culture. This will be a spring and summer that we will not soon forget for many being involved in the final stages, completion, inaugural worship, and dedication event of a church facility will be a once in a lifetime experience. Enjoy it get energized by it and let this excitement lead us forward in using the facility for the glory of God and the building up of His kingdom. We have a large mission field right here in the Alexandria area alone let s get at it no more excuse of the lack of a building for not growing, sharing, and living in God s Word, Jesus Christ. In fact, the newness of this community of faith and its building may provide us with a once in a lifetime opportunity to see people s lives changed to witness many people being turned by the Holy Spirit to God in repentance and faith in the good news of Jesus Christ. Those Bible verses on the studs will always be surrounding the activities that take place in the LWLC building, reminding us of where our solid foundation lays the Living Word of God. We certainly are not a perfect bunch of people but we don t stand on that; we certainly aren t the wisest, richest, most powerful bunch of sinners in the world but we don t stand on that; our hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness! Thank goodness for this Word of promise!! We have waited for this spring season to come we have waited with eager anticipation for the wonderful tool for ministry that God has blessed us with now the time is near to be faithful stewards of this gift from God. Yes, we are here to stay standing on the cornerstone of Christ!! Together in Christ- Pastor A.J.

Stud Signing Filling the Building with God s Word YOUTH & FAMILY

April Youth Event at Lakes Area Recreation

April Youth Event Our April youth event was a huge success! Over 30 kids and parents had a great time at Lakes Area Recreation: pizza, Sue Empting led relay races in the gym for everyone in grades 1-12, along with a great game of dodge ball, and open gym time. This was a much-needed time to burn off energy (fellowship!) while being reminded of how we run the race of faith with self-control, perseverance, and strength through our cornerstone, Jesus Christ! Forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14 Positive Role Model??? This week we witnessed another momentous day in the world of major team sports according to the world s standards, as NBA basketball player Jason Collins becomes the first active player in a major team sports to come out of the closet with the announcement of I m gay. According to NBA commissioner David Sterns, he is a positive role model for others. President Obama says He couldn t be prouder. NBA superstar Kobe Bryant was quick to tweet a message to Collins, Don t suffocate who u r because of the ignorance of others. An ESPN broadcaster referred to Collins as being courageous. ESPN columnist Jared Max calls Collin s announcement a leap of faith. Former NBA player and coach Kurt Rambus expressed that those who are educated will not have a problem with this. In light of this story, I was wondering if I should apologize to our youth and their families for the terrible role model I ve been as your pastor. Should I be a positive role model by coming out of the closet, being more courageous, stop suffocating myself, take a leap of faith, get educated, and be accepting and tolerant of this behavior? Should I stop teaching and preaching this unaccepting, intolerance to our young people, and let them know that their own understanding of who I am is of ultimate importance. Should I stop asking God each day for the Holy Spirit to protect me from myself and just be who I am? Should I apologize for suffocating people with the Living Word of God apologizing to our youth for not being open to the total dismissal of God s created order and the truth of God s Holy Word? The answer to these questions is of course, no! However, should I come out of the closet with the truth of who I am? The answer to this is yes this must be done I must admit to the selfish, prideful, lusting, deceiving, sin-filled self that I am by repenting towards God and believing the good news of the forgiveness of sins. God s Word has made it clear what my own orientation is like it is not pretty it is in fact who I am on my own- 100% sinner! Over and against the voice of the Great Deceiver, Satan, I hear the voice of God s Word that continues to call people to put their sinful self (our orientation) to death, and to live as a new creation in Christ (not in myself). Don t believe the voices of this world, even those in professional sports that call you away from the truth of God s Word and into your own sinful desires and orientation. Thanks be to God that through the promises of God given to me in baptism, I have died to my orientation and been untied with Christ in His righteousness through faith. Of course, those who have been preaching tolerance and acceptance in this case are not going to be tolerate or accept this Biblical view. I found it very ironic that on the same day that the sports news was reeling with the coming out of Collins, it also was focusing on the release of quarterback Tim Tebow from the team of New York Jets, a person who has been so often criticized for standing up for his faith in Jesus Christ in the midst of the crazy world of professional sports. In response to his release, Tebow simply tweeted Proverbs 3:5-6, Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. I echo this Word from God in the face of a world of defiance towards God and His Word a world that takes us back to the garden a world that continues to listen to the voice of Satan saying, Eat and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. Lord, have mercy! Pastor A.J. Dick graduated from the University of North Dakota and Sally graduated from Macalester College and both taught school for a few years in Crookston, until Dick began a 37 year career as a teacher and coach at Rockford College in Rockford, IL. Dick retired in 1998, and because the Bromleys had both grown up around lakes, they moved to Alexandria in 2000 Sally and Dick have three children: Karen in Wadsworth, IL., Kent in Oak Park, IL., and Matt in Centennial, CO. They also have four grandchildren in Ill. and their ten year old Labrador named Maggie, who rounds out the family. Dean and Lou Ann Petersonsponsors Paulette and Paul Johnson Dean and Lou Ann transferred their membership to Living Word Lutheran from a local Lutheran congregation, after worshipping with us several times as well. They have been married for 48 years and have lived in the Alexandria area since Lou Ann grew up in the area as well. Dean is retired from his employment in the cement industry, but still helps out at Stub s Marine this busy time of year; Lou Ann is semi-retired in the nursing field. The Peterson s have four children, all of whom live in the Alexandria area. They noted the friendly, smiling faces they have encountered at LWLC when they have worshipped with us and are excited about being part of God s mission for Christ at LWLC.

WOW News: Thank you to those LWLC women who filled out a survey regarding the organization of Women of the Word group for our church. Surveys are being reviewed, and those interested in helping to organize this group will soon be contacted regarding a planning meeting. Anyone who still wishes to complete a survey may find it in the February newsletter. Please leave it with Paulette in the church office or at the Information Table on Sunday morning. DELEGATES REPORT 2013 Augustana District Convention Report SPREAD THE WORD Pastor Jon Lindekugel of Christ The King Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, MN welcomed us as the host church for the convention. Pastor Randy Freund of Faith Lutheran in Hutchinson delivered the message in our opening worship service. Pastor Freund stated that we are in a unique time, as Christianity is on the decline especially in the nineteen to twenty-nine age group. But for us, it is also an opportune time to spread the Word and to spread the Word you need tools, we are the tools. The topic for our first general session was New Hope Mission Society. The speaker was Rev. KK Alavi, from India. As he spoke, I imagined it was as if the Apostle Paul was giving the message. Rev. Alavi, being from India, had dark skin and a beard as I imagined the Apostle Paul would look. Rev. Alavi was very small in stature as I believe the Apostle Paul was. Rev. Alavi walked gingerly with a cane and Paul had some form of affliction, whatever that was. Rev. Alavi was bold in his sharing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He brings his message to a hostile community, the Muslim audience in India, without fear for his life, as did Paul. His message is strong in how we reach the Muslims because we have the greatest news in the world only found in the love of Christ. Rev. Alavi s goal is to develop a Bible School in Bisharah. A video on the work being done there was introduced by Rev. Alavi s son. The second general session was on Building Leaders for a Global Harvest (New Ministry). Charles Lindquist was the presenter, a representative of the World Mission Prayer League. Our district has committed this cause to prayer and also financial help. He introduced us to Leadstar University College in Ethiopia whose focus is missional, contextual, holistic, and reciprocal. He concluded with a discussion of African Christian History. The Business meeting was held with the election of new members to the Augustana District Board. The 2012 Financial Report was presented and approved. A motion was made, seconded and approved to adopt the 2013 budget of income and expenditures in the amount of $78, A resolution to create a permanent Board of Christian Education and eliminate the Boards of Publications and Theological Education was discussed. A motion was made, seconded and approved to pass this resolution. Pastor Randy Freund, Augustana District Council Chair gave a brief report emphasizing Theology, Church and Mission. Good Theology doesn t save anyone, Jesus does; by the power of the Holy Spirit, the Church was born; and as we are firm in the Word, equipped for service, and mutually accountable, we carry out the one thing the church was called to do, missions. Committee reports were presented along with District Conversation and Visioning. A number of interesting presentations were featured in Break Out Sessions, including: SOLA Publishing, Institute of Lutheran Theology (ILT), East European Mission Network, Project Video, World Mission Prayer League, and New Hope Mission Society. Respectfully submitted, Dennis Kalpin and Ruth Kalpin MISSIONS Faith Comes by Hearing Memorial Day Sunday, May 26 th, will mark a special opportunity for LWLC to support our military personnel in a way that is consistent to who we are as disciples of Christ. 10 LWLC Missions Committee has Successful Beginning Organized in March 2012, the LWLC Missions Committee has met several congregational needs as well as expanding beyond our congregation to the Alexandria community and missions abroad. During the upcoming year, the committee will add several additional areas of focus. More military outreach and help for families in need is planned, and funds have been budgeted for quilting supplies once we are in our new church building. Questions or suggestions for mission projects should be directed to LeRoy Zimmerman, chairman. Cheer Team A Cheer Team serves those LWLC members who need encouragement through cards, visits, and sometimes arrangement for delivery of meals. Fifteen people work in groups of 2 or 3 for two months at a time to meet congregational needs. If you are interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Carolyn Moeller. Transportation Team Sixteen members of LWLC have volunteered to provide transportation to church events for those folks who are in need of such. Their names, addresses, and phone numbers are listed in each newsletter. If you are interested in helping with this ministry, please contact David Moeller. Love, INC LWLC has an active membership in Alexandria Love, INC. Our congregational representative to Love, INC reports through the LWLC missions committee and shares current Love, INC. needs through our newsletter. In September 2012, our church helped to fund a GAP Ministry, which provided tennis shoes for children in need, as identified by Love, INC. Several from our congregation participated in the purchase and distribution of the shoes. Volunteers are always needed at Love, INC. Training is provided and there is no requirement regarding volunteer hours. Congregational contact people for LWLC are Sandy Aamold and Cindy Lerohl. Sharing Hands In the Sharing Hands ministry, LWLC women use their knitting and crocheting talents to bring blessing and comfort to others. To date, 28 prayer shawls have been given to LWLC members, and 45 military helmet liners have been sent. Baptismal blankets and banners have been made for those receiving baptism. Baptismal memory boxes, made by Chuck Hauck, are also given to the newly baptized. Some LWLC youth have also been involved by helping to make shawl and helmet liner tags, which identify the items as a gift from Living Word Lutheran Church. Sharing Hands meets one Monday afternoon each month at the church conference room. New volunteers are welcome to come at any time. Those with questions about this ministry should contact Paulette Bakeberg. School Supplies for Honduras In the summer of 2012, the LWLC missions committee sponsored the collection of school supplies to be sent with John Kirckof for the Honduran School Project. Each year, John participates in a medical/mission trip to Honduras through International Health Service of Minnesota. The group does mission work along with providing voluntary medical care for those in need. LWLC members donated some 200 pounds of school supplies which were packed in tubs and ultimately distributed to children in orphanages and schools in the city of LaCeiba and also a children s home in Puerto Lempira, Honduras. LWLC members also contributed monetarily to the project, and these funds were used for patient care and medical supplies needed there. This project will again be implemented in the summer of Those who have questions are invited to visit with John, who will be giving a temple talk regarding this project in late July.

When building chairman, gave his report at the council meeting he commented: There were a lot of smiles and excitement at the stud signing event. How true that was! This was a day when our new church became even more of a reality. You could almost hear the songs of praise and thanksgiving from a grateful and growing congregation. Scores of scriptures and prayers are now permanently stored within the walls of Living Word Lutheran Church. Thanks be to God! Doyle also reported that the stonework is nearing completion, exterior siding is going up and the bell tower is on the way up and will be topped with a ft. Cross of Christ. The Volunteer Worker Program is being formed for work to start in late May or early June. Dave Christopher and Leroy Zimmerman will serve as coordinators. HOLY HUMOR A little girl dressed in her Sunday best was running as fast as she could, trying not to be late for Bible class. As she ran she prayed. Dear Lord, please don t let me be late! Dear Lord, please don t let me be late! While she was running and praying, she tripped on a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress. She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again! As she ran she once again began to pray, Dear Lord, please don t let me be late But please don t shove me either!
