1 LUTHERAN CHURCH, LCMC Pastor A. J. Kluver th Avenue East Alexandria, MN Through the power of the Holy Spirit we are growing, sharing, and living in God s Word, Jesus Christ pastorlwlc@gctel.net; secretarylwlc@gctel.net August God s Grace and Peace to you in the name of Christ our Lord, Called 2 Serve this was the theme of the 2016 LCMC National Youth Event held in Des Moines, Iowa this month. Eight youth and two adults attended this event from Living Word Lutheran Church, including myself. You will see some pictures from this event in this newsletter, and hear some stories from our youth later this month concerning their experiences. Yes we are called by God to serve... to serve one another. However, as noted by Pastor Ken Jones, theology professor at Grand View University where the Youth Event took place, this call to serve is from God, but it is not for God. God does not need our service but our neighbor does! We don t serve in order to please God Christ has pleased God on our behalf as the perfect servant. Rather, we are called to serve on behalf of other people in need. Secondly, Pastor Jones noted the truth about serving others it often sucks. Yes, that is the word he used and this was very understandable to me. It is quite often just plain hard for us. During our Des Moines experience, when I was serving Hope Ministries by walking around their property in the near 100 degree heat picking up garbage including a lot of cigarette butts I was not exactly having the time of my life. What kept me going was envisioning our next ice cream stop when this serving was over! Yes the reality is this we do it for our neighbor and it often sucks but this is our call as Christians to Love our neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:39). 1 Peter 4:10 puts it all into perspective for us, Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God s grace. God s gift of grace is the foundation for our serving for our being faithful stewards or caretakers of what we have received not what we have earned. This was the proclamation that the over 300 participants in this Youth Event heard Called 2 Serve. One of my favorite teaching moments was entitled, 2, To, Too. Here it is in a nut shell: We are called out 2 by 2 together with others we are not alone; we are called out To someplace and To someone to other people in our lives; and finally, we are called out Too or also in addition to being served by others as a neighbor you join in the call to serve by using whatever gift you have received. This is God s Word for us as a Lutheran Congregation in Mission for Christ! You 2, To, Too are Called to Serve together, reaching out to the needs of others, just as Christ has served us, for the glory of God and the building up of His kingdom. It may suck at times but that is when we remember God s endless grace that takes root by Faith and will bear fruit the fruit of Service. Thanks be to God, in Christ Jesus our Lord! Pastor A.J.

2 EDUCATION Read Through the Bible in a Year The LWLC Adult Education Committee is encouraging all members to get involved in Reading Through the Bible in a Year. The Scripture readings for each month are included in the monthly newsletter. The Scripture texts for each week will also be the discussion forum for the Sunday morning Bible study as well at 10:30 a.m. Please consider taking part in this exciting adventure and encourage others to do so as well. We can be assured that God s Word does not return void (Isaiah 55:11) Daily Bible Readings - August August 1 Isaiah August 2 Isaiah August 3 Isaiah August 4 Isaiah August 5 Isaiah August 6 Jeremiah 1-3 August 7 Jeremiah 4-5 August 8 Jeremiah 6-8 August 9 Jeremiah 9-11 August 10 Jeremiah August 11 Jeremiah August 12 Jeremiah August 13 Jeremiah August 14 Jeremiah August 15 Jeremiah August 16 Jeremiah August 17 Jeremiah August 18 Jeremiah August 19 Jeremiah August 20 Jeremiah August 21 Jeremiah August 22 Jeremiah 49 August 23 Jeremiah 50 August 24 Jeremiah August 25 Lamentations 1-2 August 26 Lamentations 3-5 August 27 Ezekiel 1-4 August 28 Ezekiel 5-9 August 29 Ezekiel August 30 Ezekiel August 31 Ezekiel CHURCH LIFE Wednesday Summer Worship Wed. evening worship continues through August 31 st at 7 p.m. The service will be focused on the Scripture text from the previous Sunday. If you missed a Sunday or want to invite someone to worship, this is a wonderful opportunity to hear God s Word proclaimed. Wed. Evening Worship Helpers Needed If you are willing to help with ushering, greeting, serving communion or setting up for communion at the Wed. evening worship services, please contact Paulette at the church office, or by secretarylwlc@gctel.net Powerpoint Presentation Help Needed With the addition of the two T.V. screens there is a need for help with the powerpoint presentations for Sunday worship. This would include reviewing the slide presentation, and editing as needed, prior to the worship service, along with the changing of slides from the sound table during worship. The worship committee is excited about the visitor friendliness and the heads up sound that will be enhanced by the addition of screens. Funeral Lenore Johnson The funeral for Lenore Johnson was held on July 7 th at LWLC. Lenore is the mother of former member Brian Johnson (wife Joyce), who moved to the Chicago area. Lenore died unexpectedly at the Fergus Falls Veteran s Nursing Facility, where her husband Ken remains a resident. Thank you to the LWLC volunteers who helped with the service. Please keep the Johnson family in your prayers. ADULT EDUCATION Tuesday Morning Bible Study The Tuesday morning Bible Study is currently studying the book of 2 Peter. The group meets from 9-10am and there is room for you!

3 Men s Bible Study The Thursday morning Bible Study will be beginning a new study soon and is looking forward to additional men getting involved. The men meet from 7-8am currently in the kitchen area of LWLC. NOTES FROM THE LWLC LIBRARY Please Check Your Bookshelves! Please be sure to check your bookshelves for LWLC library books! There are a number of books currently checked out of the library which should be returned so others can read them! Thank you! New Bible Commentary Added to Library The LWLC library has recently added a new Bible commentary resource, the 17-volume New Daily Study Bible by William Barclay. Each of these 17 volumes is an approximately 200-page paperback book, covering one or more books of the New Testament. Barclay considers himself a theological middle-man, attempting to convey the results of (theological) scholarship to the ordinary reader. The volumes are intended to be a help for both devotional and serious Bible study. Each commentary begins with important historical background on the New Testament book, followed by useful commentary and background on a few verses at a time. The books are easily readable and have been used already as reference by leaders of the LWLC WOW Bible study group, currently studying the books of Paul. You may find it interesting to see what Barclay has to say about the current Sunday texts, or you might just select a New Testament book you would like to study and use his commentary as a resource. You may also participate by donating a pair of socks along with the VBS kids to add to the shoe boxes! Love INC identifies the children, provides us with the age, sex of child, and size of shoe needed. Many of these children do not have a new pair of quality tennis shoes to start school with. We plan to 'shop' for shoes the 16,17,18th of August with a date determined closer to that week. The distribution date is set for the 25th of August in the morning, There will be signup sheets at the information table.
