1 LUTHERAN CHURCH, LCMC Pastor A. J. Kluver th Avenue East Alexandria, MN Through the power of the Holy Spirit we are growing, sharing, and living in God s Word, Jesus Christ pastorlwlc@gctel.net; secretarylwlc@gctel.net September, Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Paul writes to the church in Corinth in 1 Corinthians 2:3, And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. Weakness fear trembling that is how I came to this calling of pastor at Living Word Lutheran Church. This call from God is not what I ever envisioned it was not my goal it was not my mission it was not my decision. In fact, the whole ride the past dozen years or so has been about weakness fear and trembling on my part, but at the same time, it has been a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God (1 Corinth. 2:4b). Paul understood this as he wrote to the church in Corinth. Paul did not decide to follow Jesus that decision was brought upon him on the road to Damascus driving him to his knees and blinding him. The voice of Christ then repented him, brought him to faith, and called him to proclamation. It was then that we hear about Paul making a decision deciding to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified then he went about his call, And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. (1 Corinth. 2:2-3) The hoopla is over Dedication Sunday Invitation/Open House Sunday and now it is time to move forward in mission for Christ- proclaiming nothing but Jesus Christ and Him crucified. The first three chapters of 1 Corinthians are especially powerful when it comes to keeping the church focused on Christ. Paul lays this out purposely, before he gets into the Christian life concerning stewardship, morality, marriage, caring for the needy, etc., the fruits of repentance and faith, in chapters 4-7. He makes it clear that all these things concerning being servants of Christ and stewards of God s mysteries (4:1) are built upon the foundation of faith the blessing that is given us through the forgiveness of sin. For no one can lay any foundation than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11). It is in weakness, fear, and trembling that I continue in this specific calling from God as your pastor that may be scary for the community of faith that I m called to serve but remember, our faith rests solely in the power of God. Together in faith, we continue in mission for Christ in the world, grounded in daily repentance driven to the foot of the cross driven to the crucified one, God s Living Word Jesus Christ, where we hear His voice and trust in His promise of forgiveness of sins and eternal life! Together in Christ alone- Pastor A.J.

5 MISSIONS Meal Ministry Living Word began a Meal Ministry on June 24th. Volunteers provide simple meals to those of our members who are ill or recuperating, or as other needs occur. It is our way of saying thank you for being part of our church family and we care about you. We currently have 22 volunteers who provide a meal on days, times and seasons that schedules allow; and we always welcome more people to our team. To date we have provided 27 meals.. If you have any questions or suggestions, call Faith Annis Shirley Finley will be the winter contact person. Blessings and thanks to both "givers" and "receivers" (those willing to be served). Needed! Fair Trade Coffee Help The Missions Committee is seeking a volunteer to coordinate the sale of Fair Trade coffee. This person will order the product, provide for display to congregation members, account for all funds received, and transfer all money received to the church treasurer. Fair Trade coffee can help farmers escape poverty. Most small-scale family farmers live in remote locations and lack access to credit, so they are vulnerable to middlemen who offer cash for their coffee at a fraction of its value. Fair Trade guarantees farmers a minimum price, and links farmers directly with importers. Through Fair Trade, farmers earn better incomes, allowing them to hold on to their land and invest in quality. For more information on Fair Trade coffee, see < John Beem can also provide background information if you are interested in heading up this project. Interested? Contact LeRoy Zimmerman or any missions committee member. Living Word Lutheran Church 2013 Transportation Team The LWLC Missions Committee has established the following Transportation Team. If you are in need of a ride to worship or other church activities, please call the team member directly. Addresses are listed so that perhaps you may find a team member who lives in your area. 1. LWLC member John Kirckof participates in an annual medical/dental/eye care mission trip to Honduras through International Health Service of Minnesota. The group does mission work along with providing voluntary medical care for those in need. John will bring details of this mission to our congregation in a temple talk in mid-august. Each year, Living Word Lutheran Church collects school supplies for elementary children, which are sent with John to distribute there. Last year, LWLC members donated some 200 pounds of school supplies, while LWLC monetary contributions were used for patient care and necessary medical supplies. Any type of school supplies suitable for elementary children are needed. Totes will be provided at the church for your donations thru October.

Then we will break into Bible study groups to select a Bible study and make plans for our individual groups. Remember, ALL WOMEN are invited, whether or not you plan to attend Bible study this year. Fellowship including all of our women is part of our focus. If you plan to attend, please sign up for the potluck at the information table on Sunday, Sept. 1. Augustana District WOW to Meet in September Women of the Word in the Augustana District are invited to attend the Fourth Annual Gathering in Watertown, South Dakota, on September 21. This is an excellent opportunity to meet other women from LCMC churches, hear inspirational messages, learn about mission activities supported by our district, and become acquainted with mission projects we may wish to begin, such as Global Health projects. More discussion on this opportunity will take place at our September WOW meeting. PRESIDENT S REPORT We are in our new church facility! I know that this is not news to our congregation, but I nearly have to pinch myself each time I go through the doorways and behold the reality of it all. God has truly blessed us with an exceptional building and I believe He has plans as to how we are to use it! We will discover those plans as we continue in prayer for guidance in all we do. Last evening we held our first council meeting at church. We met in the spacious double classroom. Work continues as the Property Committee Chairman, Curt Kreklau, proposed that we get bids on expanding our parking by approximately 40 spaces. This work may be done this fall or this coming spring at the latest. There are plans to complete the first half of our garage as well. A new Living Word Lutheran sign is also in the planning stages. The council will meet for the Annual Planning Session on October 26 th. Committees are asked to

7 have their goals and budgets for next year ready for council review by that date. There was a discussion regarding the information counter and tables for parishioners to use during fellowship time with refreshments after worship. We must ask that the information table not be used for coffee time as we need to keep that area dry and open for those wanting information. We will be setting up some of the five-foot round tables and we have ordered eight two-foot round stand-up tables that should arrive soon.
