3 May 14, 2017 The Fifth Sunday of Easter 8:00am & 10:30 a.m. AS WE GATHER Only after Easter were the disciples able to understand Jesus words. Now they knew that He was and is God in the flesh, our way to the Father. So sure were they, that Stephen could echo Jesus last words as he faced death. Peter, in the Epistle, was able to review prophetic words of Scripture that they now knew spoke of Jesus. Today it is our turn to proclaim Jesus as the way, truth, and life, so that our friends will also know who He is and join us to live in His marvelous light. 5 Sit FIRST READING: Acts 6:1-9, 7:2a, In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word." This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)--jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen, To this he replied: "Brothers and fathers, listen to me! "You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him-- you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it." When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. "Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." Then he fell on his knees and cried out, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." When he had said this, he fell asleep. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God! 6 EPISTLE: 1 Peter 2:2-10 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. As you come to him, the living Stone-- rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him-- you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: "See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame." Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, "The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone," and, "A stone that causes men to stumble and a rock that makes them fall." They stumble because they disobey the message- -which is also what they were destined for. But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand HOLY GOSPEL: John 14:1-14 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the fourteenth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going." Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him." Philip said, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Don't you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it 5

7 is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. APOSTLE S CREED C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Sit About Holy Communion The Lord s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord s Supper, please pick up a copy of What is the Lord s Supper? at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. United together this Lord s Day, we have entered the timeless mystery of the Eucharist. Partaking of this bread and wine today, we remember that meal instituted by Jesus on the night when He was betrayed and likewise anticipate the marriage supper of the Lamb in Your unending kingdom. Though it is yet a little while off, today we dine in hope of the coming of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 8

During the Sunday school hour, (9:15am 10:15am) and during the 10:30am worship service the nursery is staffed for children 0-3 years old. The nursery is in the preschool on the north end of the building. It is the first classroom on the left as you enter the preschool parent lounge area. 12 Sharing the Caring Christ with All People John 14:1-14: When Jesus proclaimed Himself as the Way, the Truth and the Life, He was telling His disciples and each of us that He came to orient us in this upside-down, mixed-up world of ours. The question of Thomas in our Gospel is a commonly asked question, Lord, we don t know where You are going; we don t know where we should go or what we should be doing, so how can we possibly know the way? And it was then that Jesus gave us a reference point to orient us, to give us direction and to be our constant magnetic north, no matter where we are in life. The word orient literally means, to position oneself with respect to one specific reference point. The specific reference point that our God gave to us was His Son, the Living Word. The reason we need Jesus to orient us in this world is that sin, the world and our flesh, and the working of the devil are seeking with all their might to disorient us. God needs us to be able to share His orienting, Living Word in this disorienting world so that people will know the Way and so they will find their way home to Him. By this Word, you have been made a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God. By this Word, the stormy sea is calmed, the sick healed, the dead are raised, the hungry fed, the leprous made clean, the sinful forgiven. How can we not share this Word, Jesus, who is our HOME, our WAY - and do it today with someone who has just lost their way? There s NO WAY but YAHWEH! Summer Worship Schedule Beginning Sunday, May 28 th (Memorial Day Weekend) and continuing through Sunday, September 3 rd (Labor Day Weekend) our worship schedule will be two services each Sunday at 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. The goal is to provide worship opportunities which allow families to plan other summer activities without missing worship as well as to informally bring our first service congregation together with our second service congregation for some fellowship time as the first group leaves worship and the second group arrives for worship. This schedule also enables us to maintain our radio ministry with the 8:00 a.m. service. 14 Wishing to thank all my friends and staff at Trinity for thoughts and prayer support during recent full knee replacement surgery. Every minute I could feel the prayers and it brought me peace. The surgery went very well and I am home recuperating for most of the month of May. Thank you so much, and God bless! Linda Kothman Faith Comes by Hearing Sunday is May 21 st Next Sunday we remember, give thanks and support those who serve us in the Armed Forces. You can support our troops by giving a gift of $25.00 that will provide a Military BibleStick to one of our troops that requests one from their chaplain. God s Word in audio can go with them and sustain them in even the most difficult circumstances. Each service member who receives a Military BibleStick also has the option to request a free Audio New Testament or Kids Bible for family back home. Sewing and Crafts will be selling rugs and quilts next Sunday between the services. Check it out! We request that you write a brief update about what your group has been doing in the past year or two, list the names of officers, leaders or other significant volunteers.
