May 6, 2018 The Sixth Sunday of Easter Divine Service Setting 4 (LSB pg 203) 8:00 a.m. AS WE GATHER Jesus is Lord. This confession may be the simplest, while at the same time an essential creedal statement of His followers. To prioritize any other idea or emphasis is to divert attention from Jesus alone, who Himself is the Lord. The corrupt systems of this world, fueled by greed, lust, and power enforced by violence, threaten to overwhelm us. Jesus is preeminent because, empowered by the love of God, He alone has overcome the corrupt systems of this world through His incarnation, life, death, and resurrection. He overcame, and we overcome in Him by faith. This faith is what opens people to receive God s love, keep His commandments, and overcome the corrupt systems of this world ourselves. Jesus is victorious, and in Him, we overcome by faith. Alleluia! WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: All Hail the power of Jesus Name LSB 549 vs. 1-3, 6 & 7 INVOCATION, CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: Our help is in the name of the Lord, C: who made heaven and earth. P: If You, O Lord, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? C: But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. P: Since we are gathered to hear God s Word and call upon Him in prayer and praise, and receive the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: Together as His people let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God, our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of Christ, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us 2

to everlasting life. Amen. P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. KYRIE GLORIA SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And with thy spirit. P: Let us pray O God, the giver of all that is good, by Your holy inspiration grant that we may think those things that are right and by Your merciful 3

guiding accomplish them; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Sit FIRST READING: Acts 10: So Peter opened his mouth and said: Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), 37 you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree, 40 but God raised him on the third day and made him to appear, 41 not to all the people but to us who had been chosen by God as witnesses, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. 43 To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. 44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, 47 Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Psalm 98 (antiphon: v. 2) P: The Lord has made known his salvation; C: he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. 4

P: Oh sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous things! C: His right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him. P: The Lord has made known his salvation; C: he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. P: He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness to the house of Israel. C: All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God. P: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; C: break forth into joyous song and sing praises! P: Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre, C: with the lyre and the sound of melody! P: With trumpets and the sound of the horn C: make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord! P: Let the sea roar, and all that fills it; C: the world and those who dwell in it! P: Let the rivers clap their hands; let the hills sing for joy together before the Lord, C: for he comes to judge the earth. P: He will judge the world with righteousness, C: and the peoples with equity. ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: The Lord has made known his salvation; C: he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. EPISTLE: 1 John 5:1-8 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 6 This is he who came by water and blood Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. 5

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. (Stand) ALLELUIA AND VERSE HOLY GOSPEL: John 15:9-17 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the fifteen chapter. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my 6

name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen Sit HYMN: Water, Blood, and Spirit Crying LSB 597 THE MESSAGE: Acts 10:34-38 OFFERING (Please sign and date the Rite of Friendship pad located in the pew. The children are invited to bring their offerings to the front at this time.) PRAYER OF THE CHURCH 7

HOLY COMMUNION PREFACE P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your onlybegotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS P: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all creation, for You have had mercy 8

on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed. By His death, He has redeemed us from bondage to sin and death, and by His resurrection, He has delivered us into new life in Him. Grant us to keep the Feast in sincerity and truth, faithfully eating His body given into death and drinking His life's blood poured out for our salvation until we pass through death to the promised land of life eternal. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us: LORD'S PRAYER ALL: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. THE WORDS OF INSTITUTION PAX DOMINI P: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: Amen. AGNUS DEI 9

About Holy Communion The Lord s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord s Supper, please pick up a copy of What is the Lord s Supper? at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. If your health requires glutenfree wafers, they are available upon request. Speak to the pastor prior to the service. Our pastors are happy to speak to you further if you have any questions. DISTRIBUTION HYMN: Lord Jesus Christ, We Humbly Pray LSB 623 NUNC DIMITTIS 10

POST-COMMUNION COLLECT P: Let us pray Gracious God, our heavenly Father, You have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of Your Son s body and blood. Keep us firm in the true faith throughout our days of pilgrimage that, on the day of His coming, we may, together with all Your saints, celebrate the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom which has no end; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICAMUS AND BENEDICTION P: Let us bless the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. CLOSING HYMN: Thanks to Thee, O Christ, Victorious LSB

The Lord Jesus Is with His Church in the Apostolic Ministry of the Gospel The crucified and risen Lord Jesus is with His Church through the word of His apostles, who are witnesses of all that he did. He was anointed by God with the Holy Spirit and with power, and he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, and so He was with those whom He sent to preach to the people (Acts 10:38 42). The Holy Spirit is bestowed on those who hear that apostolic preaching, who are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name (Acts 10:43 44, 48). For as He came by the water of His Baptism, even to the blood of His Passion, so the Spirit testifies to the truth with the water and the blood in the apostolic ministry of the Gospel (1 John 5:6 7). By these means, Christ Jesus speaks to us, that His joy may be in us and that our joy may be full. For this purpose, He appointed the apostles to go and bear fruit in order to make known His divine friendship to us. Today s Radio Broadcast by Delores Volkers in memory of her mother, Alma Volkers. They are developing a Church Properties group or committee, 5-7 members, to oversee the overall maintenance and repair of our facility which includes both building and grounds. They have written general objectives for the committee and a more specific scope of work for projects here on our campus. They are now in the process of recruiting committee members. If you have interest in serving on the committee and knowledge in building maintenance/ repair please contact one of the Building Work Group members: Jon Lentz, Karen Petron-Broda, Delano Schultz or Craig Cooper. DCO Retiring this Fall - I have been considering retirement for about a year and after much thought and prayer I feel it is the best for Trinity and myself. I plan to retire from full-time church work on October 31, I will be working hard for the next 6 months, with the leadership, to prepare for a smooth transition. The transition time 14

will include taking an inventory of all my responsibilities and with leadership determine what duties to end and what tasks need an alternative plan to continue with either volunteers or future staff. I feel blessed to have served with all of you here at Trinity for the last 18 years. Please pray for me and Jody and we prepare for this new phase in our lives and we will be praying for God s richest blessings for Trinity as they move forward. Craig Cooper, DCO Faith Comes by Hearing Sunday is May 20 th The third weekend in May we remember, give thanks and support those who serve us in the Armed Forces. You can support our troops by giving a gift of $25.00 that will provide a Military BibleStick to one of our troops that requests one from their chaplain. In the month of May all contributions will be matched. The Military BibleStick is a portable, digital audio player, which comes preloaded with the Audio Drama New Testament and selected Psalms. This Audio Bible, which is about the size of a pack of chewing gum, easily fits into a uniform pocket. The Audio Bible is great. It enables me to listen to it at my convenience: on long drives, in my room, office, or the gym while working out. U.S. Army officer God s Word brings my soldiers comfort, security and peace. Thank you for the Military BibleSticks. U.S. Army Chaplain What a tremendous opportunity to give a gift that will create and strengthen the faith of those who sacrifice so much for us. I am encouraging each family at Trinity to consider providing a Military BibleStick for one of our troops. On Faith Comes by Hearing Sunday, May 20th we will receive a door offering after both services to support this important outreach ministry. Checks can be payable to: Trinity Lutheran Church with BibleStick in the memo.) The Military BibleStick reaches service men and women deployed in some of the most dangerous areas of the world. God s Word in audio can go with them and sustain them in even the most difficult circumstances. Each service member who receives a Military BibleStick also has the option to request a free Audio New Testament or Kids Bible for family back home. Military BibleSticks provide real hope for our heroes! Women's Bible Study: A new Women's Bible Study started on April 18th and we had a group of 11 women.
