July 2, 2017 Fourth Sunday after Pentecost 8:00 & 9:30a.m. AS WE GATHER Most Americans know the first stanza of the national anthem of the United States of America. That first stanza of the Star-Spangled Banner is sung before sporting events, music concerts, and county fair festivities. We may not be as familiar, however, with the fourth stanza of this song: O! thus be it ever when freemen shall stand, Between their loved home, and the war s desolation, Blest with vict ry and peace, may the heav n-rescued land, Praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto In God is our trust; And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave, O er the land of the free, and the home of the brave! Francis Scott Key includes the words In God is our trust. As America celebrates its Independence Day, we recall similar words of the Psalms. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom He has chosen as His heritage! (Psalm 33:12). It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man (Psalm 118:8). May our trust be in God for safety, salvation, and all things! WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: America the Beautiful 1. O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountains majesties, Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea! 2. O beautiful for pilgrim feet, Whose stern, impassioned stress A thoroughfare for freedom beat, Across the wilderness! America! America! God mend thine ev'ry flaw. Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law! 3. O beautiful for heroes proved, In liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life! America! America! May God thy gold refine. Till all success be nobleness, And every gain divine! 2

4. O beautiful for patriot dream, that sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears! America! America! God shed His grace on thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood, from sea to shining sea. 5. O beautiful for men of faith, who founded this great land; Proclaimed for us, "In God we trust," And held to God's strong hand. America! America! God shed His grace on thee Till lives confess His righteousness, from sea to shining sea. INVOCATION AND OPENING SENTENCES P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. C: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. P: And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. C: The sum of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous rules endures forever. P: Jesus prayed, Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. C: Jesus said, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. P: For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. C: For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: Let us confess our sins to God, our Father. C: Lord God, as we look into the mirror of Your Law, we see ourselves as we really are. P: We each see a person who struggles to control their tongue. C: We find ourselves saying things we shouldn t and not saying what we should. P: We each see a person who struggles to control their thoughts. C: We find ourselves troubled with things that are in Your capable hands. We find our minds and hearts invaded by things such as revenge, jealousy, lust, and greed. 3

P: We each see a person who struggles to live as one who is dead to sin and alive in Christ. C: We find ourselves wanting to live according to Your will and to walk according to Your ways, but instead, we miss the mark. P: Lord Jesus, we bring these sins to You this day, the sins we have spoken out loud and the ones that cry out from the depths of our soul. C: We come seeking the forgiveness You won for us. Create in each one of us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Amen. P: Baptized children of God, Jesus died to sin and rose to life again so that we might do the same. As God s chosen people, we are dead to sin and alive to God in Jesus Christ. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen! Thanks be to God! INTROIT P: I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever; C: with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. P: Blessèd are the people who know the festal shout, C: who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face, P: who exult in your name all the day C: and in your righteousness are exalted. P: For you are the glory of their strength; C: by your favor our horn is exalted. P: For our shield belongs to the Lord, C: our king to the Holy One of Israel ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever; C: with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. SALUTATION AND PRAYER OF THE DAY P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. 4

P: Let us pray Almighty God, open our ears, our hearts, and our minds to hear Your Word and lead us by Your Spirit to follow it, especially when doing so creates challenges and hardships for us as Your people, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Sit OLD TESTAMENT: Jeremiah 28:5-9 Then the prophet Jeremiah replied to the prophet Hananiah before the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord. He said, "Amen! May the Lord do so! May the Lord fulfill the words you have prophesied by bringing the articles of the Lord 's house and all the exiles back to this place from Babylon. Nevertheless, listen to what I have to say in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people: From early times the prophets who preceded you and me have prophesied war, disaster and plague against many countries and great kingdoms. But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord only if his prediction comes true." L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God! EPISTLE: Romans 7:1-13 Do you not know, brothers--for I am speaking to men who know the law--that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives? For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man. So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. For when we were controlled by the sinful nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "Do not covet." But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind 5

of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead. Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died. I found that the very commandment that was intended to bring life actually brought death. For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death. So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. Did that which is good, then, become death to me? By no means! But in order that sin might be recognized as sin, it produced death in me through what was good, so that through the commandment sin might become utterly sinful. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand HOLY GOSPEL: Matthew 10:34-42 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the tenth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn " 'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law-- a man's enemies will be the members of his own household.' "Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. "He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me. Anyone who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and anyone who receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man's reward. And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward." L: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. 6

APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 10 About Holy Communion The Lord s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord s Supper, please pick up a copy of What is the Lord s Supper? at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. If your health requires glutenfree wafers, they are available upon request. Speak to the pastor prior to the service. Our pastors are happy to speak to you further if you have any questions. DISTRIBUTION HYMN: Draw Near and Take the Body of the Lord LSB 637 Stand POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING P: Let us pray. C: We give You praise and thanks, O Lord, for nourishing us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation in this Holy Meal. Lead us to walk according to Your will and according to Your ways as You are the way, the truth, and the life, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. (9:30am continues here) BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you, The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you; The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. C: Amen. VIDEO: An Independence Day Prayer 9

CLOSING HYMN: Lead on, O King Eternal 1. Lead on, O King eternal, the day of march has come; henceforth in fields of conquest your tents will be our home. Through days of preparation your grace has made us strong; and now, O King eternal, we lift our battle song. 2. Lead on, O King eternal, till sin's fierce war shall cease, and holiness shall whisper the sweet amen of peace. For not with swords' loud clashing or roll of stirring drums with deeds of love and mercy the heavenly kingdom comes. 3. Lead on, O King eternal; we follow, not with fears, for gladness breaks like morning where'er your face appears. Your cross is lifted o'er us, we journey in its light; the crown awaits the conquest; lead on, O God of might. 10

Sharing the Caring Christ with All People Matthew 10:34-42: You never know how a life will be touched by a small act of kindness like the sharing of a cold cup of water - but God does! Jesus gives us a hint of the fact that the intentional kindness we share with one another in little acts of love is found in the parable of the sheep and the goats when He refers to Judgment Day: When I was thirsty, you gave Me something to drink. When did we do this for You, Lord? When you did it for any of My people, no matter how unimportant the act or the person seemed to be, you did it for Me! Reach out to the world with the kindness of God s Word as you would do it for Jesus Himself! Today s Radio Broadcast is sponsored by the members of Trinity.
