The Third Sunday in Advent Divine Service I December 17, :00 a.m. AS WE GATHER If you light the candles of an Advent wreath at church or at home, it s likely that the color of the candle you light this Sunday is pink. It s also likely that this is the only pink candle on the wreath. Pink is a color of joy. In fact, this Third Sunday in Advent is commonly referred to as Rejoice Sunday. But don t confuse the joy we celebrate this Advent with a passing happiness. No, the joy we have this Advent is greater. It lasts always. That s what today s Epistle assures us when Paul writes, Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you (1 Thessalonians 5:16 18). Only in Jesus, the coming Savior, can we rejoice in good times and bad times, busy times and quiet times, sick times and healthy times. In Christ, we rejoice always! PRESERVICE MUSIC WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS OPENING HYMN: Rejoice, Rejoice Believers LSB 514 INVOCATION, CONFESSION & ABSOLUTION The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. 2

Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son + and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. THE LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH HYMN: O Come, O Come Emmanuel LSB 357 vs. 1 & 2 SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY P: Let us pray Lord Jesus Christ, we implore You to hear our prayers and to lighten the darkness of our hearts by Your gracious visitation; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Sit OLD TESTAMENT: Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord 's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor. They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations. "For I, the Lord, love justice; I 3

hate robbery and iniquity. In my faithfulness I will reward them and make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants will be known among the nations and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledge that they are a people the Lord has blessed." I delight greatly in the Lord; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Do not put out the Spirit's fire; do not treat prophecies with contempt. Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil. May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Stand ALLELUIA AND VERSE HOLY GOSPEL: Luke 2:1-21 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the second chapter. 4

In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased! When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us. And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Sit 5

HYMN OF THE DAY: O Sing of Christ LSB 362 SERMON NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And he will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen PRAYER OF THE CHURCH OFFERING (Please sign and date the Rite of Friendship pad located in the pew. The children are invited to bring their offerings to the front at this time.) PREFACE 6

P: It is truly good, right, and salutary... evermore praising You and saying: SANCTUS 7

WORDS OF OUR LORD PROCLAMATION OF CHRIST P: As often as we eat this brad and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. C: Amen. Come Lord Jesus. P: O Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, in giving us Your body and blood to eat and to drink, You lead us to remember and confess Your Holy cross and passion. Your blessed death Your rest in the tomb, Your resurrection from the dead, Your ascension in to heaven, and Your coming for the final judgment. So remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: LORD'S PRAYER P: Lord, remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: ALL: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION PAX DOMINI AGNUS DEI 8

Sit About Holy Communion The Lord s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord s Supper, please pick up a copy of What is the Lord s Supper? at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. If your health requires gluten-free wafers, they are available upon request. Speak to the pastor prior to the service. Our pastors are happy to speak to you further if you have any questions. DISTRIBUTION HYMN: Once He Came In Blessing LSB 333 9

POST-COMMUNION COLLECT P: Let us pray We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. BENEDICTION CLOSING HYMN: Hark the Glad Sound LSB

Advent has long been a time of preparation, preparation for the celebration of Christmas. Yet the road to Christmas is anything but easy. In our culture, people prepare for Christmas either by an escape from life or by an excess of it. Even for the believer, preparations for Christmas twists and turns, and we meet many strange figures along the way. Prophets cry out in visions. John the Baptizer preaches in the desert. Angels appear whether you are asleep or awake. The voices are varied, the places are strange, but one thing is certain: in each encounter, God is preparing us for the celebration of the greatest encounter of all, the birth of Jesus, His Son, our Savior, the Redeemer of the world. Come join us each Wednesday evening at 6:00pm to hear the voices on the edge and prepare your lives for the single greatest encounter of your life. Wednesdays, Dec. 20 at 6:00pm, with a meal to precede at 5:00pm. If you would like to provide a dessert for the meal, sign up on the kitchen door.
