3 The Twenty-third Sunday after Pentecost Divine Service Setting 1 (LSB pg 151) November 12, :00 a.m. AS WE GATHER As we await the final coming of the Lord, we prepare ourselves faithfully for the final day. Our lives are filled with the kind of eager expectation that awaited the arrival of a bridegroom to a feast in Jesus day. We do not know the time of that arrival, but we are certain about it happening. Our preparation for the final day of earth or our final day on earth flows from our Baptism and is enriched by our interaction with the saints of God gathered for worship. We gather in the Lord s house and at His Table, joyfully anticipating the feast to come. P: All nations will come and worship You, C: for Your righteous acts have been revealed. Alleluia! CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: Let us confess our sins to God, our heavenly Father. C: Merciful Father, we bring before You our confession, imploring Your mercy for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Savior. We are sinful from birth and daily add to that burden. Our actions have been thoughtless and have resulted in evil. Our words have been hurtful, and we have not always honored Your name in our speaking. We have left undone many things that could have brought glory and praise to You. O Lord, grant us Your grace and the blessing of forgiveness. By the renewing work of the Holy Spirit, lead us to amend our sinful lives, that we may grow daily in righteousness and be bringers of peace in our time. Sit OLD TESTAMENT LESSON: Amos 5:18-24 Woe to you who long for the day of the Lord! Why do you long for the day of the Lord? That day will be darkness, not light. It will be as though a man fled from a lion only to meet a bear, as though he entered his house and rested his hand on the wall only to have a snake bite him. Will not the day of the Lord be darkness, not light- pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness? "I hate, I despise your religious feasts; I cannot stand your assemblies. Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them. Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps. But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream! L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. HYMN: The Day Is Surely Drawing Near LSB 508 vs. 1, 3, 5 & 7 EPISTLE: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' "Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.' " 'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.' "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. "Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!' "But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.' "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. If there is a time during the Worship Service that you feel your child (or you) needs a time out, please feel free to leave the service. If you leave the service, you can go to the lobby or use the large conference room across from the church office. The conference room has speakers and one-way glass so you can still participate in Worship. During the Sunday school hour, (9:15am 10:15am) and during the 10:30am worship service the nursery is staffed for children 0-3 years old. The nursery is in the preschool on the north end of the building. It is the first classroom on the left as you enter the preschool parent lounge area. There are also speakers in the nursery so you can listen to the service. 9

12 Sharing the Caring Christ with All People Matthew 23:1-12: The Pharisees had the seat of Moses and the authority to teach, but their words and actions did not match. The world is watching, if the words of Jesus have any authority in our daily lives. If our actions do not match the words we share on Sunday or in our Bible Study, then they can do more harm than good. Our Christian faith needs to carry on into our back yard while we are mowing, and while we are watching sports, and in our conversations at the mall. Our Lord promises to exalt those who humbly serve Him for His sake at all times. This may be our most powerful witness: serving Him at all times and in all places. Pray for the Holy Spirit to bless our witness while the world is constantly watching as we serve Christ. Today s Radio Broadcast is sponsored by Bill Spaeth in memory of his wife, Natalie. Christmas Bake Sale Looking for Volunteers to make cookies, candies, etc. for a Homemade Bake Sale. 9:00am to 1:00pm on December 10 th. Price is $5.00 per Dozen or as priced. Any number of cookies would be appreciated. Proceeds will be divided between Social Ministry, Prince of Peace and the Trinity Sunday School. See the signup sheet on the kiosk for instructions. Altar Guild will be ordering Poinsettias for Christmas They will be 61/2" pots for $11.75 with gold wrap. Colors available are: Red, White, Pink and Candy Cane (red with white speckles). We will be printing a "Memorial/in Honor of" folder again this season. Please order by Nov. 24th. Place your check made out to Altar Guild in an envelope and write the memorial information on the outside, also include your telephone number, please print clearly. 14 Food Drive We will collect non-perishable food items for the food shelf during this Thanksgiving season. Please note the display in the entry and bring your items when it is convenient for you. We will also collect at our Thanksgiving worship services. Please remember those in our community who need our support during the holiday. LCEF Shared Blessings We are currently in the 2nd tier of the Shared Blessings program. We need at least 7 more investors to get back to the 3rd tier. Every month we remain in the 2nd tier we lose $200 in rebates. There is still money available for the Young Investors. If you have questions please talk to Lori Wendt or her at loriannwendt@gmail.com. SISTER ACT January 3rd is our trip to see SISTER ACT at the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. Please join our fun! Janette, Shepherd Tours, Hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner. The time of year to reach out and help others through the Angel Tree Program is upon us once again. Our Church is pleased to continue to participate in Angel Tree, a Prison Fellowship program that provides a pathway for incarcerated parents to restore and strengthen relationships with their children. Volunteers like you help make this possible by giving Christmas gifts and the Good News of God s love to children in the name of mother s and father s behind bars. Angle Tree Sunday will be on Sunday, November 26 th, names of children and gift ideas will be available in the Narthex on the tree. Please be sure to sign your Gift tag name out at the desk that will be located next to the tree. Gifts will need to be returned wrapped and under the tree by Sunday, December 10 th. STOCKINGS FOR JESUS MISSION PROJECT: Kathy Schlueter is again making Christmas stockings to distribute to needy families and organizations that aid those in need. Kathy works year round to assemble thousands of stockings. They are sent out locally and out of state. Items are needed to stuff the decorated stockings. Items to donate include pencils, pens, notepads, rulers, erasers, blunt scissors, yo-yos, decks of cards, combs, small toys, wrapped candy, soaps, etc. Cash donations will be used to pay for shipping and to purchase more stocking stuffers. Please have your donations in by November 19 th to allow time for packing and delivering.
