3 The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost October 1, 2017 Divine Service I 8:00 a.m. AS WE GATHER Sometimes it feels as though this time in which we live is the very first time that people directly challenge God. Yet this feeling is inaccurate. We are reminded by Ezekiel that God s people were going around saying, God is not just already at the time of the prophets. Distrust of God has been around even longer, since Adam and Eve questioned the goodness of God. In the Gospel, chief priests and elders question the authority of Jesus. Nothing new. But Jesus doesn t react angrily. Instead, He lets His actions speak louder than words. With very few words, Jesus would go on trial, be wrongly convicted, suffer beatings, be mercilessly crucified, and be raised from the grave. In Christ, we need not fear scoffers. We don t need to respond by being snarky. We don t need to try to silence anyone. We simply trust the authority of Jesus death and resurrection and follow His way of loving our enemies and praying for those who persecute us. Rather than return evil for evil, we turn to the crucified and risen Jesus and live. "As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel. For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son-both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die. "Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not just.' Hear, O house of Israel: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are 6

8 unjust? If a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin, he will die for it; because of the sin he has committed he will die. But if a wicked man turns away from the wickedness he has committed and does what is just and right, he will save his life. Are my ways unjust, O house of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? "Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? EPISTLE: Philippians 2:1-4, If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 9 HOLY GOSPEL: Matthew 21:23-32 L: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty first chapter. Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. "By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you this authority?" Jesus replied, "I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. John's baptism--where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?" They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' But if we say, 'From men'--we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet." So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Then he said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. "What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.' " 'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. "Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go. "Which of the two did what his father wanted?" "The first," they answered. Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. 13 Sit About Holy Communion The Lord s Supper is celebrated here in the belief and glad confidence that our Lord gives us as He says, not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. If this is your belief, we welcome you to join us at the Lord s table. Because we are called to examine ourselves before receiving the Lord s Supper (I Corinthians 11:28-29), we encourage you to consider the questions on p in the front of the hymnal. If you are communing with us for the first time, or if you would like a fuller understanding of what we as Lutherans believe about the Lord s Supper, please pick up a copy of What is the Lord s Supper? at the Information table in the entryway. Please reserve the white grape juice cups in the center of the communion trays for those who for health reasons are unable to drink wine. 16 Sharing the Caring Christ with All People Matthew 21:23-27: God s Word brings together two concepts that you don t see very often: stars and humility. Christians are to shine like the stars in this crooked and twisted world, and to do it with the humility of Christ. Now there is a tall order. How is it done? One needy soul at a time. Christ is working through you for that tall purpose. He is working out salvation: the liberation of pain, struggle, challenge, emotional hurt, guilt, and shame through the forgiveness of sin, the loving of one another, the putting of others first, and He is doing it through you to others. You are that bright shining star giving glory to God in the humility of day to day living for Christ. Your life has significance, right where you are. You are the answer to someone s prayer with your Christ-like heart, words, and actions in the vineyard where you radiate with God s glory. Minnesota Teen Challenge Choir MN Adult & Teen Challenge will bless us with worship & song at the 10:30 a.m. service and a time of sharing and testimonies during Bible class TODAY. The testimonies and heartfelt singing of our visitors is a moving experience every year. 17 Pastor Hinz's Installation will be held on Sunday, October 22 at 2:00 p.m., followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. Pastor Hinz s father will preach, and Pastor Finnern, from Messiah will officiate. Pastor Hinz will have his first service at Trinity on October 29, Reformation Sunday, and there will be a "Meet & Greet" in the fellowship hall between services. Please plan to attend these important events and give Pastor Hinz and his family a warm Trinity welcome. The Leadership Team Sunday Morning Fellowship In September our hosts are Virgil and Sue Bragelman. Members who have last names beginning with the letter R are asked to bring treats for our fellowship time. If you can help, please sign up on the bulletin board. $50,000 Matching Challenge Opportunity A member of Trinity Lutheran Church has offered to match all gifts up to a total of $50,000 to reduce the principal on our building mortgage. Reaching the goal of $100,000 will help Trinity reduce the principal and our monthly mortgage payments. All gifts in support of this challenge would be above and beyond your regular giving. This opportunity began September 1 st, culminating on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, Prayerfully consider how the Lord may be challenging you to participate. Envelopes are available in which to place your check, write Challenge Fund in the memo of your check, then please put it in the offering plate. Housing for the Hinz Family Pastor Hinz and his family are looking for temporary housing until they find a permanent home. If Anybody has a home (knows of someone) who is looking for a renter, please contact Jeff Cziok at Trinity has recently received an from LCEF stating that as of Sept 30th we have dropped to the second tier of the Shared Blessings Program. That equals about $200 a month decrease in the rebate amount we will receive. Would you please consider becoming an investor so that we may maintain our numbers? VOTER'S ASSEMBLY MEETING: A Voter's Assembly Meeting will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 9:15 in the Fellowship Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to present a "DRAFT" of the 2018 proposed budget to the congregation. 18 Are You My Secret Angel? A secret angel is anyone from our congregation who volunteers to secretly support one of Trinity s confirmation students as they work through their confirmation classes. The most important duty of a secret angel is to remember the student in their prayers. Only with the Lord s Will will the children hear His words and learn His lessons. To allow the students to know their angel is near, secret angels drop off anonymous forms of encouragement in the church office called angel mail at least ONCE a month for the student. Secret angel mail is kept simple: cards, letters, words of wisdom, favorite verses, poems or snacks/treats are just a few ideas. The student has the same secret angel throughout 7th and 8th grade. The secret identity of their angel is always a mystery and is not revealed to them until their confirmation day! Trinity s congregation is blessed to have 15 new 7th grade children enrolled in confirmation class this year! Would you prayerfully consider mentoring one of them? Why not join a New Guild in your life The Altar Guild?!! It s rewarding, fun and not very time consuming. Meet new friends and work with others you already know. Come to our fall meeting on Wednesday Oct. 11 at 6:30pm and learn more. You can enjoy yourself while caring for the church as well!! See you there! Questions: Call Sue Kulzer: Mission Festival Sunday October 22 Rev. Dr. Bernhard (Bernie) Lutz, and his wife Elly, will be here Sunday October 22nd. Pastor Lutz will lead us in worship and preach at both services. He will also make a presentation during the Bible Class. Pastor Lutz has served as a missionary in East Africa with the Lutheran Heritage Foundation (LHF). LHF translates, publishes, distributes and introduces books that are Bible-based, Christ-centered and Reformation-driven. LHF has published the catechism in more than 70 languages, including most recently the Anyuak Small Catechism and many more translations have been requested. In the past decade, LHF has published and distributed more than 700 titles/editions and 3 million Lutheran books to pastors, seminary students, missionaries and churches all at no cost to them. Pastor Lutz will be encouraging to consider our calling to share the Gospel with all nations, people groups. During the 10:30 a.m. service Pastor John Bakou will also be reading scripture. A door offering will be received after both services to support the important translation work of Lutheran Heritage Foundation.
