When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they receive the Holy Spirit. The text tells us of the story of Peter and John who come down to Samaria. The people their had accepted the Word of God. Peter and John prayed for them, that they may receive the Holy Spirit. However, it should be noted that in the early part of the chapter, we will read that Philip did the task of preaching, healing and teaching the Samaritans. He baptized the women and men of Samaria when they believed. Peter and John, representing the apostolic circle based in Jerusalem came to confirm the Samaritans. 11. THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CHURCH: Church Education is defined as; a teaching-learning enterprise, grounded in theology and Scripture, whose goal is enabling the persons to learn God through Christ as experienced in Christian Community, the church. When we talk about equipping the members of the church for the ministry, we could not avoid thinking of what the churches are doing in terms of education and nurture HISTORICAL BACKGROUND: From the story, we can see the responsibilities of the church leaders in helping the young in the faith to grow and be able to do the mission of the church. Almost two hundred years after this story happened, equipping the new converts continued in the ancient church. Origen tells us of the three stages, a person has to go through before baptism and acceptance as members of the church. This program was already part of the process of equipping the members. The first stage includes inquiry into the individual s character, morality and occupation. This is done while the person goes through instructions on the faith. When the person pass, he/she can be admitted to the second stage, that of being a hearer. They are those who prove themselves to be morally worth and are receiving instructions in preparation for baptism. The length of the period as a hearer varies from one to three years. Then, if the person pass, they move to the third stage for further inquiries and instructions. ( Sherill, 1953 )

CHALLENGES IN EQUIPPING MEMBERS FOR THE MINISTRY: Today, we do not seem to be very serious with our task of nurturing the members of the church. We are saying this because the Christian Education Program is very much wanting in many of our local churches. We should not think that Christian Education is equal to Sunday school. But greater than that, for there are many burning issues related to the task of equipping members for the ministry, because of the rapid rate of social change. The family structures and situation are changing. Economic, political, as well as cultural conditions also affect the family greatly. There is the challenge of multi-culturalism and religious pluralism. There is war and violence. Children s rights are not upheld. TV. and computer games compete with the public education system for the interest and time of children. V. THE HOLY SPIRIT AND EQUIPPING THE CHURCH MEMBERS: It should not be forgotten that the text tells us about the Holy Spirit empowering people who have accepted the Word of God and believed in Jesus Christ. Whatever the training we give to our church members, it is important that we pray for the Holy Spirit to empower them. Our members may be equipped with the knowledge of the Bible, trained to do theology, have skills to teach and preach. But if the Holy spirit is not with them, they will be still shallow and cold. For indeed, it is the Holy Spirit that makes as warm and inspired to carry out our task not for our own glory but for God. It is the Holy Spirit that makes us bold to dream dreams and see vision. And forge ahead to make this vision a reality. VI. CONCLUSION : Our churches should consider all these things. Equipping the church members should not be limited only to Sunday School or to a communicant class which is held only for three or four week-ends. It means the whole of church life should become a venue and an opportunity for the young and old to grow in faith and in the understanding of one responsibilities as a believer of Jesus Christ. 4 Page 4 Volume 12, Number 2 Do You Really Need Vitamin and Mineral Supplements for Good Health WP - Jan-Dec 2002 Written by Cynthia T. Gayya, NPS-NSTD Do you take vitamin and mineral supplements daily to keep you going when tired or rundown? Or do you take supplements to feel better physically or to improve your appearance? These are the reasons why people take dietary supplements according to a survey conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute, Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST). The survey also revealed that the most common supplements taken by consumers are multivitamins and minerals, B-complex vitamins and vitamin C. Dietary supplements are becoming very popular nowadays and a significant percentage of the population is taking them. A trip to the local health food store will reveal different combinations of vitamin and mineral supplements one would ever imagine. People get attracted by the health claims of manufacturers that sometimes they substitute these supplements to healthy diet. Experts say this is dangerous because there are possible risks of direct toxicity of high doses of vitamins and minerals. The more common symptoms or side effects are nausea, vomiting, headache or diarrhea. They said further that taking vitamin and mineral supplements without professional advice could lead to the potential danger of nutrient interactions. For instance, giving high dose calcium could inhibit iron absorption. Studies conducted abroad showed that when varying doses of calcium have been added to a meal containing iron, nonheme iron absorption was decreased. Researchers postulated that there is a complex mechanism that takes place in the lumen, wherein calcium interferes with iron absorption. Another example of an interactive effect is that of iron and zinc. A high intake of iron may deplete zinc absorption, or vice versa. These nutrients, together with other metals like cobalt, nickel, manganese, and zinc share in part the same metabolic pathway. In order to maximize the absorption of these nutrients, they have to be consumed in the proper ratio, otherwise, either one nutrient is utilized or the other one is wasted. These are times when vitamin and mineral supplements are necessary. One reason is to augment an inadequate diet to prevent or correct a specific nutritional deficiency. For example, iron supplementation may be helpful in a patient with iron deficiency anemia or folic acid supplementation maybe recommended to pregnant women to reduce the risk of bearing children with neural tube defects. Another use of dietary supplements is pharmacological, where dose above the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) are used for a specific pharmacological effect, rather than to make up for any deficit in dietary intake. For instance, patients with acute infection or burns need increased energy and micronutrients for fast recovery, but their weak bodies prevent them from absorbing the required nutrients from a normal diet. The best strategy for promoting optimal health and reducing the risk of chronic diseases, according to the FNRI-DOST, is to choose wisely from a wide variety of foods. There are tools like "Recommended Dietary Allowances", "Your Guide to Good Nutrition", "Food Exchange List", and "Food Composition Table", among others, available at the Institute at Bicutan, Taguig, Metro Manila to help you plan a balance diet without excessive intakes of nutrients. For more information, contact the Food and Nutrition Research Institute at telephone number local 2287 or 2299.

5 D news Page 5 IV. Loving as Jesus Did Charles F. Stanley Scriptures: John 13:34-35; 15:12-13 I. Introduction: Jesus defined love in terms of sacrificial actions rather than words or emotions. He said, Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13). The way we treat other people demonstrates to the world that we are followers of Christ. Because He first loved us, we can show love to the undeserving. II. Four Different Loves Eros includes passion or infatuation as well as sexual or romantic love. Storge refers to the natural affection between a parent and child. Phileo refers to the intimacy that good friends share. Agape is sacrificial love--a commitment that motivates us to deny ourselves on behalf of another. This is the type of love the Lord had in mind when He commanded His followers to love one another. III. Jesus Command to Love 1. This was a new commandment: Christ s instructions to the disciples raised the standard for how we treat others -- thinking of their needs before our own. 2. Jesus told us to love our enemies: That doesn t mean we have to like how they act or think. However, we are called to love even those who oppose us. Jesus hated the hypocrisy of the temple money changers (Matt. 21:12-13) but still had compassion on them, just as He did on all of Jerusalem (Matt. 23:37-38). 3. The distinguishing characteristic of a believer should be love (John 13:34-35). First Corinthians 13:1 says that if we don t have love, we are like a noisy gong--loud, unpleasant, and meaningless. 4. We are to walk in sacrificial love. More than our words, our deeds should convey God s love (Eph. 5:2). Selflessly: Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve (Matt. 20:28). Our love should not be centered on what someone can do for us, but how we can bless him or her. Understandingly: Jesus knew the limitations of His followers, which is one reason He was able to have compassion on their failings. We should show the same consideration for those who mistreat us or live sinfully. There is always a reason why people rebel against God. Trying to understand doesn t change their guilt before Him, but it can help you love more freely. Following the Lord s example means learning to see people as they are and caring for them anyway. Forgivingly: There are countless ways we can take offense at what others do or say. Forgiveness isn t usually easy, but someone who genuinely loves will also be forgiving. At the next opportunity to extend mercy, we should remember that Jesus was willing to cleanse us of all our sins. Also, hanging on to bitterness and resentment will negatively affect our health, not just our relationships with God and the offender. Sacrificially: In Mark 8:43, Jesus said, If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. The highest form of love is to lay your life down for another. Genuine love almost always involves some level of sacrifice. That doesn t mean we must give in to all the demands of others; instead, we should seek to give them what will ultimately be most beneficial. V. Sacrificial love takes many forms: Husbands or wives might win their spouse for Christ through selfless affection. One particular friend went out of his way to demonstrate God s sacrificial love to me when I was in college. Godly mothers lay down their life for a season to care for their infants and small children. Servicemen and women risk their life for our country. VI. Conclusion: Unless you experience genuine affection, you will never know true joy and contentment in life. To love as Christ does and be loved in return is God s best for us. At times you might feel left out or all alone. Remember, the Father s love is always available if you have accepted His offer of a saving relationship with His Son. There is nothing more fulfilling or meaningful than experiencing His divine affection. Draw near to God, and let Him fill your heart with His perfect love.

6 Page 6 Volume 12, Number 2 The word from heaven was: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Ngunit si Hesus, the way people believed in Him, hindi Niya kailangan magsisi at lalong hindi Niya kailanganing patatawarin, dahil hindi nga Siya nag kasala. Jesus must have waited for the hour to strike, for the moment to come, for the summons to sound. At ngayon sa unang pagkakataon, sa kanilang pambansang kasaysayan, the Jews realized their own sin and their own need of God. Never before had these been such a unique national movement of penitence and of search for God. Katiyakan, that He was indeed the chosen of God. 2. Sa mga sandalling yaon, alam Niya na itinakda na ang Kanyang tagumpay = gayon man ang Kanyang sandata, was the power of suffering love, set before Him to fulfill His task and that is to save. Are you one of them?

On Being and Boundaries: The Making and Unmaking of Healthy Relationship. ON BEING: The wise leader teaches more through being then through doing. The quality of one s silence conveys more than long speeches. BOUNDARIES: Workers who continually take on duties that aren t theirs will eventually burn out. It takes wisdom to know what we should be doing and what we shouldn t. We can t do everything. To God be the glory! LOVE IS B Y : A L L Y A N J E L L S A M O N T E I remember in my younger years, me and my classmates would exchange slum books with each other and asnwer thoroughly the questions in it, one of these was the definition of Love Love is like a rosary full of mystery others would say, Love is blind while others settle for a verse in the Bible, Love is patient, love is kind Gone are the days when I could not really grasp the whole idea of Love. As we get older, experiences teach us a lot on so many things, it requires us to filter things out, drop some principles in exchange for stronger ideations. Nevertheless, accumulated experiences help us grow, the more we know about love, the stronger we get on facing what it has to offer. It is like knowing a person, the more familiar we are to love, the more comfortable we become. How much more if we act like this towards our Savior? The more we know God, the more comfortable we are in His presence, and the bolder our prayers become. The deeper we know God, the greater our love becomes for Him, the more we understand what He has to give. The greater the things we can expect from His promises. How then can we know God? The Bible teaches us so. In 1 John chapter 4 verses 7 through 11, we are guided by the word on how we must live as Christians. We are taught the greatest commandment: to love one another. Love is the most powerful force in the world. Paul would not dedicate a chap- ter in one of His books if he had not known its power, he wouldn t have said that the greatest of the three virtues was love, he wouldn t even have put it first in the fruits of the Holy Spirit and finally he wouldn t even juxtaposed it with God. Paul knew that love was the strongest emotion or state people can have or achieve that is why he had put effort in explaining it to the churches he went through. Love transforms. It has the capability to change a person and the rest of the history. Love transcends time. It can last for a lifetime, passing from generation to generation. Love is. It is living, breathing and being. Probably we all have our own definitions of Love, but what matters most is to whom and to what do we give our love to. A word of caution though, anything too little and too much of something is hazardous. When we lack love for something, it is apathy. We are out of concern for something, we do not really care. When we become so much in love, it becomes obsession or idolatry. We become engrossed to the emotion to the point of being harmful, when we love something too much with all our hearts we become obsessive. The secret to a balanced love is to pass it on. What do we do when something great happens to us? Do we not tell it to our loved ones? Same thing with anything that we feel that overwhelms us, too much of it and we cannot contain it, the tendency is to give it away such as love, joy, blessing and whatnot. This year, as we press on towards life, may we always have the courage to love; whatever we may be experiencing may God be always put first for we are overcomers awaiting for the fulfillment of His promises.
