We are relating ourselves to the work of God our creator and to His Church. One of the most relevant self-examination aside from what is usual practice during Lent is to assess ourselves in a manner of being a keeper of others, understanding others and loving our homeland by seeking answer with personal contribution in the development of our native land. Looking on our historical facet of Christian colonization and missionary work among Asian countries, we see Philippines as one of the early Christian country whose nationalistic view is to protect and enrich our dynamic heritage. The Spanish regime conquered our homeland by battle using various deadly weapons, the Americans accomplished what the Spaniards failed to attain in 300 years. Instead of military expeditions, the Americans established the public school system and public health system, and build a network of trails and roads. Instead of foraging for food and stealing livestock, the Americans paid for their purchases and hired local labor at acceptable wages. History though, speaks better and much reasonable, and we are able to see how community of faith learn from their error and seek God s grace for forgiveness. From Roman Catholicism to mainline Reform Protestant Christian as history continues, generation of religious movement struggled with the Doctrinal dogma (views). In the issue of salvation through work, reformed Christians stands on the view of grace through faith in Jesus Christ that we are justified. As a result, we no longer have to be afraid to do work because the assurance of God s presence in our lives is there, in the way we live our faith and with the people. The fundamental element of our faith in God depends fully on His grace. Acts 13:38-43 states that partnership despite of the Jews rejection to Paul and Barnabas they continued to preach the gospel of Salvation to the Gentile nation, and they did it because of the grace of God that is for all. As written in v.7 I have made you a light for the Gentiles, so that, all the world may be saved. This leads the Gentiles in gladness and praising the Lord s message. In deep contemplation, exposure to various culture and traditions; relating to different religion, sect and determination, I realized, God speaks to a reality of Christ within Culture. A mixture of people, conversing to each other, sharing and giving respect in their expression of faith is essential. As I listen to people who suffer from discrimination because of cultural difference, primitiveness, I have learned to draw and appreciate the work of Jesus Christ for them even though some of them do not recognized Him. And to those who are followers of Jesus, we must learn to share to them the essential meaning of Christ the Messiah beyond religion and denomination. Because cross cultural experience confuses us, confessing the Christ of History and Christ within culture will lead people to God in union to redeem the dying creation. The grace of God continues as we live and serve together with people, His grace of Salvation provides power which leads us all in unity. God s secret agenda of salvation is revealed in faith community and we too shall continue working so that no one would suffer eternally. 3 HIS GRACE WORKS... In the Church we are annoyed by the idea that people easily judge and talk about us all the time, some would come to conclusion even if the event did not reach them right. One morning as I do my meditation, I happen to browse on the powerful message of hope reading from Luke 6:31 which declares: Trust others as you want them to treat you. Did we ever ask ourselves on the idea of experiencing the fateful event of a person which made them to act and gave us the authority to conclude? We need to look beyond ourselves and see others as God sees them 1...reading the word beyond would give us the meaning further than or more than, beyond is opposite of limited and within. There is a big difference between justice, mercy and grace. Dr. Benoni Silva-Netto in our Doctor of Ministry class defines: Justice is when we get what we deserve; Mercy is when we get what we don t deserve and Grace is when we get more than and better than what we deserve. That brings us to the truth that the grace of God was given to us through the Son Jesus Christ, an act that is beyond and an act of love that is not limited. An old Indian proverb says no one has the right to criticize another until he has walked a mile in his moccasins 2. Judgement and criticism should only happen when we have walked and done our part of being with them, and in their shoes, which sometimes rarely happen because we often live our own separate lives. Many, if not some do not care about each other, going further and walking extra mile then is sometimes impossible. This month we are urged to see the continuing work of the Grace of God. That His life is a work and promise that went beyond understanding, Jesus articulated in his work and ministries to always do to other what you would have them do to you. It has given us to fulfil our roles and look beyond to extend ourselves to others. God s grace therefore is a gift that was given to us even if we do not deserve its favour, all because of God s love that we are being saved and redeemed. At home, parents taught their children to say the grace before meal, it is sometimes usual that these habits are passed on to our children and equally expected of us as parents to be teaching a right value to our family. This made me realize how prayer and grace are sometimes associated with each other; it was the grace of God that we are made well in life. All of us are living and moving under God s care. It is on the table that we recognize the bounty of God s love as He blesses us and provide us of our needs. Grace is a greek word (χαρις), the English translation of a greek word meaning that which brings delight, joy, happiness and good life. We read grace in the New Testament 170 times, a reminder of the favour that was given to us in our frailty to sin. God is continuing and will be working for the grace that is for us. How about giving grace to others? If God is doing this for us, how can we give back the grace that was freely given to us? Paul and Barnabas in our biblical text for the month proclaimed the graciousness of God that many Jews sought for them to speak more of the forgiveness of sin. They were driven to witness for the Lord and so His mighty power and love shall be proclaimed, notice how Paul and Barnabas lives were used as vehicle towards understanding of the vastness of the grace of God, they were more driven to make known the goodness of God, they were busy working for the glory of God, they were not busy talking about other people s lives. In our days, we are therefore called to proclaim the power of God, we are to be reminded that we ought to become witnesses and living testimony of the grace of God, it is in us and in our lives that reflects the result of the grace that is not limited. We have the responsibility to testify in our words, actions and lifestyle how God has saved us and continue His work of grace. This means that we are really called out to minister, to become mission centered Church, to become people oriented Church, to become determined to communicate the actions of Love, making true the grace that was shown to us and for us through the life that was shed on the cross for the many. May we therefore as a church, called out and sent forth to proclaim and honour God through our lives. 1 Harold Sala, TODAY COUNTS a guidelines for a Meaningful Life., OMF Literature Inc A native North American heelless shoe made of deerskin MARCH 2012 PUBLICATION OF UCCP SABANG CHURCH OF CHRIST DISCIPLES Page 3

Forgiveness wipes clean the slate of offense, hence it is freeing for everyone. Indeed, forgiveness was the heartbeat of Jesus. Some of His last words requested forgiveness from God for the ignorant acts of His offenders (Luke 23:34). Christ s greatest act of love was the forgiveness He extended by His voluntary death on the cross (Colossians 2:13-15). Jesus described His own act of love when He said, Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13). Jesus was the epitome of love and forgiveness; He owns the trademark. Forgiveness is the fuel for living a life free from the clutter of cutting words and unjust acts. A life without forgiveness is a lonely life locked up in the solitary confinement of sin. Forgiveness flows when you have been authentically and thoroughly forgiven. Half-hearted forgiveness is the destiny of those who have not tasted the tender touch of forgiveness from their heavenly Father. Unless the forgiveness of God has graced your heart and soul, your capacity for forgiveness will be foreign and futile. It is the grace of God and faith in Him that fuels forgiveness in followers of Christ. The job description of Christians is to love with forgiveness because we have been forgiven (Colossians 3:13). Think about the depth and breadth of your forgiveness. Ignorant acts, they are forgiven; drunkenness, it s forgiven; lust, it s forgiven; immorality, it s forgiven; hate, it s forgiven; ignoring God, it s forgiven; unbelief, it s forgiven. Love forgives because it has been forgiven. Remember where you were BC (before Christ), and reflect on where you would be today without His love and forgiveness. Recall what it was like to be lost and bound up in your sin, and celebrate how far God has brought you. Love is extremely grateful for God s goodness and redeeming power. Forgiveness is second nature and somewhat automatic for followers of Jesus who are consumed with Christ s love. They are enamored with God s love for them and others. When you have been forgiven much, you love much (Luke 7:47). Your capacity to love is directly tied to your willingness to receive Christ s forgiveness. Accept the Almighty s forgiveness so that you can extend forgiveness. Let go of unforgiveness and replace it with His unconditional love. Love looks for excuses to eliminate hard feelings, as it replaces resentment and bitterness with love and forgiveness. Love by forgiving your family member who may not even know they hurt your heart. Love by forgiving your friend who volitionally violated your confidence. Love by forgiving your father and mother who are preoccupied parents. Love by forgiving your child who is ungrateful and selfish. Love by forgiving yourself for your stupid decisions. Forgiveness forgets the past, engages in the present, and hopes in the future. Extend forgiveness indiscriminately and receive it graciously. Delete any record of wrongs from the hard drive of your heart. Call, write, or initiate a freeing conversation of forgiveness. Reject the temptation for indignation and humbly receive God s grace instead. Love liberally by regularly relying on forgiveness. Love forgives. 7 THE POWER of HIS LOVE by: Elder Rizalina Reyes God created us in the light of His love. He never meant for the pains in life to separate us from Him. But sometimes man overlooks his sufferings and yield to its confusion and fury. Only Christ has the ability to restore power in His love once we separate from Him. Hebrew 13:5 A pastor told of a certain couple in his church who had waited for a long time for child. They were overjoyed when a boy was born to them. But they were crushed when they learned that he had seizures without warning. His parents always take him to church and the little boy developed a deep love for Jesus just like his parents. Despite his severe handicap, he never fails to attend Sunday service. The father was the one always holding the boy during the worship. One particular hard seizure the father gently held the boy to his chest and went at the back of the sanctuary. He wasn t embarrassed nor frustrated, gently whispering into the boy s ears. In his face was calmness and depth of abiding love. That s the picture of our Heavenly Father s love, who, in spite of our imperfections call us His children and tenderly holds us through the deepest parts of our struggles and assures us of His love and encouragement. Isaiah 41:10 Many times when we face problems and difficulties we rely on ourselves or on human to help us solve problems. When there is a threat to our health, we tend to look to renowned physician, medical specialists rather than God. We need first to rely on God and trust Him that everything will be alright. God is eager to show His power on behalf of people who truly trusts Him. Isaiah 43:1-2. The God we worship is the One who feels deeply the pain of betrayal and rejection of Israel and some of us yet unlike humans He continues to woo (encourage) us, forgives us and calls us to Himself. Such love and grace is beyond comprehension. In Hosea 1:2 consider what God asked of Hosea. He is to marry a whore named Gomer. Gomer is a hardened professional prostitute by choice, a faithless woman who bore him a son and then, went on to have two other children that were not his. Adding more pains to his calling as a prophet and obeyed God. God illustrated Israel s unfaithfulness by making Hosea felt pain of what Gomer has done to him. Gomer is the picture of Israel, a prostitute who abandoned her family but Hosea the husband was there to search for her and bring her back to his home and family. God forgives us and restores us to His love and service. When we are broken in spirit and fell hopeless, let us come to Jesus for healing and surely, the power of His love will envelop us. In the midst of God s people s sufferings and shame, we see a faithful God carrying them still. We can no longer be captive to the devil s control because we are embraced by the Power of His Love. Prayer: Father Almighty, keep me spiritually fit. Let your Word be so much a part of me and help me share the Gospel according to the measure of my faith. In Jesus name. 8 GET YOUR GLOW from IRON (Fe) (Article from Food and Nutrition Research Inst. DOST) Micronutrients or trace elements are needed by the body in minute amounts. Only these substances are the magic wands that play leading roles in the production of enzymes, hormones and other substances. They help regulate growth, activity, development and the functioning of the immune and reproductive systems. Adequate intake is especially crucial during early childhood and other periods of rapid growth, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Iron is one of the most important trace elements required. It is essential for many proteins and enzymes that maintain good health and is involved in many metabolic reactions and the regulation of cell growth and differentiation. Iron is also involved in the proper functioning of the liver and plays a role in improving the immune activity by protecting the body against the harmful actions of free radicals. Iron is widely distributed throughout the body. The total iron content varies with age, sex, nutrition, and state of health. A normal adult man is estimated to contain 4.5 grams (g) of iron. Iron is part of the hemoglobin which carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues and carbon dioxide from the tissue to the lungs. Hemoglobin gives the red color of the blood. It transports oxygen to the different parts of the body. Oxygen is needed in the production of energy needed to do work. As minute as the amount is, however, the consequences of a deficiency are severe. Iron deficiency can lead to anemia when the iron stores in the body become depleted and hemoglobin synthesis is inhibited. Symptoms and signs of anemia include: tiredness and weakness, lack of stamina and decreased work and school performance, slow cognitive and social development during childhood and difficulty in maintaining body temperature. Decreased immune function that increases susceptibility to infection, breathlessness, headaches, insomnia, loss of appetite, and paleness in the skin, conjunctiva, palm, nailbed, and buccal mucosa or inner portion of the lower lip, are other signs and symptoms of iron deficiency. The National Nutrition Survey (2003) conducted by the FNRI-DOST revealed that the following groups are suffering from iron deficiency anemia (IDA): 6 out of 10 infants (6 months to less than 1 year old); 2 out of 10 children (1 to 5 years old); and 3 to 4 out of 10 young children (6 to 12 years old). Iron deficiency develops gradually and usually begins with a negative iron balance when dietary iron intake does not meet the daily need for iron. This negative balance initially depletes the storage form of iron while the blood hemoglobin level, a marker of iron status, remains normal. Iron deficiency anemia is an advanced stage of iron depletion. It occurs when storage sites of iron are deficient and blood levels of iron cannot meet daily needs. Blood hemoglobin levels are below normal with iron deficiency anemia. However, Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) has poured its effort in identifying better and alternative strategies to address the alarming problem of iron deficiency. In 2006, the Institute embarked on evaluating appropriate technologies and fortificants for rice fortification. This study reveals that consumption of rice fortified with either ferrous sulfate or micronized ferric pyrophosphate has greatly reduced iron deficiency among schoolchildren who served as the study participants. Get that natural glow! Consume foods rich in iron like egg yolk, liver and meat. Vegetarian sources of iron are: alugbati, kangkong, saluyot, petsay, kamote tops, mustasa, and dried beans. Table 1. 10 In the Eyes of Faith By Allyan Jell Samonte I am saved, empowered and bound While searching through the internet, I have discovered a document that goes the same with our theme this month, which is the continuing works of God s grace. This document is actually a brief sermon in a Baptist church, the speaker gave three points in understanding the works of grace and I have briefly summarized it for the benefit of everyone. The Grace of God and its works are seen all throughout the bible, the Bible actually is one of the fruits of the Grace of God, but if we stick to our verse which is found in the book of Acts chapter 13 verses 38 to 43, we would find three points of description. The Grace of God is a saving grace, an empowering grace and a binding grace. 1 The arrangements of these works of grace have been put systematically in order to organize how grace really works in us. But note that this is only a personal interpretation; the works of Grace varies personally in our context. Paul on the earlier verses clarifies that we have been forgiven and justified through Jesus Christ; this is where the work of redemption of grace works in us. Through dying, Jesus has conquered death and we have been liberated from sin, thus God s redeeming grace is experienced by everyone from the moment Jesus died and rose again. In the New Testament we can read several stories of how God works in the people he had chosen and favored. In the Now Testament, we can see and hear from people whom God had worked through how grace can be sufficient in our lives. From a documentary on a late Monday evening I heard these lines... Woman: Because of what happened, I realized that God is working in us. Reporter: How can you say that He is working in you? Woman: We have been united since then; we are surviving and fighting until now. The woman was part of the many people who have survived the Earthquake-Tsunami Disaster in Japan. On March 11, 2012, Japan commemorates the victims and their progress on the devastating tragedy that hit them a year ago. A 9.0 magnitude earthquake had struck Japan and had done numerous inflictions. But for a year now, 1 Continue in the Grace of God by Bro. David Buffaloe 2 Ibid. stories of resiliency and generosity surfaces news and media to present that this country is focusing its energy on their recovery and that they are united and can never lose hope. These stories of incredible faith is how the Grace of God works in our days, these are empowering and binding grace. The grace of God empowers people He has chosen and favored, He gives us strength to fulfill the tasks He has assigned to us. By doing these tasks we are bound on a personal relationship with God and with our brothers and sisters, our co-workers in the vineyard. We are bound by God s grace with one another in order to fulfill a greater task; we are united in goal, to worship God in Spirit and in Truth. How does God s grace continues its work among us? We believe that as Christians, our lives are fully surrendered to God, our hopes, our dreams even our disappointments and anxieties. The Christian way of life is a surrendered life. We will work for God but we will also allow God to work through us. If anything is accomplished, then it will be accomplished because it is the Grace of God working in us 2. This is exactly how things should be in our way of life as people of God, as stated by Paul in his writings to the Church of Corinth. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. (1Cor.15:10) We are all here because of the continuing work of the Grace of God, every day we are challenged to share the same point, we are here because God blessed us with His unfailing love and we are imbued by His unending grace. All of us are continually being saved, empowered and bound by that amazing thing called Grace.
