Ronell Aguas Hernandez Sin can be easily defined and described as follows: missing the point or the target; a failure to obey rules and regulation; an opposite of obedience; neglecting of moral standard. Sin can affect feeling or emotion of a person and God, others often spiritualize it by saying under Satan/demon possession. Indeed, understanding the nature of Sin is vital and very helpful to a person who may have critical analyzing skills on issues and circumstances. In order to be liberated, meaning enlightened to such, a series of research studies is also essential. The Philippine society is journeying together, struggling in the issue of Reproductive Health (RH) Bill, the church and state debates on moral grounds, considering the morality of life, discussion on contraceptives, sex sacredness, socio-economic and emotional capability of every Filipino families, as well as religious standards. Whether you are pro or anti, it will never answer the chaotic predicament of the society. There are numerous verses in the Scripture that may validate perspective, historical and other references to consider. The Holy Scripture bears out the seven deadly sins namely: pride, envy, lust, anger, greed, sloth and gluttony. These are negative attitudes that serve a personal interest, a character that disputed God s glory. Nowadays, more people are engaged in self-willed ideology, reasoning, and realization. Christ taught us to work together as a redeemed community of faith, weaved towards the celebration of both life and dignity. We longed for a considerate community, having the interest of knowing each other s feelings, acknowledging other potentials. Understanding and Liberation from Sin entails finding and looking for wisdom that will come from God, in giving others chance to participate in the exercise of learning and experiencing God s acts of liberation is a response from God s saving grace, humanity is at one in Christ. Martin Luther and John Calvin, leaders of the Protestant Reformation, owed much to Anselm's theory and taught that Christ, the only sinless person, was obedient to take upon Himself the penalty for the sins that should have been visited on men and women. The origin of individual sins is discussed in James 1: " 14 but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death"(niv). Issues, controversies, allegation and conflicts are present everywhere. Christ followers must always look at Christ cross, imaging all the suffering had received and the murmuring crowd who do not really know where to stand. They are all victims of rivalry and damnation. Therefore, what matters most for a believer is to take a stand for God, find the peace and wisdom that is abundant in Him. To defeat and conquer the product of SIN is to let every good man respond according to Christ example, embracing the ways of the Lord that in our journey we may find the Christ who suffered for the many so that all may be saved.

FORGIVEN One of the most crucial parts of parenthood is the process of 6 learning, teaching our children the habits of discipline while molding them into an abling process that would continue to bring them into this world with a wholistic perspective. In as much as we would want to, we ourselves should see through their pains and joy in suffering in their journey and the only way to accept them even at point of absolute displeasure is to accept and forgive them, we are always looking forward to see them change and grow in the faith. I got to own my very first precious stoned bracelet which I purchased from a friend. It was so precious that is was placed in a beautifully designed box for caring and maintenance purposes. One day, I discovered it was all loosed up and some of the pieces where lost, I got so upset and tried to find out what really happened. I was so astounded that at that early age, my son is trying to hide the truth hoping that discipline and private talks would be prevented. As always Pastor Ronell will always remind me, hate the sin and not the sinner. Those words really are affirming, and it was a reassuring reminder to all of us who have been too strict and conscious about the sin that was made in many generations. For us, understanding sin will truly bring us to liberation and freedom. Sin was introduced to man when Satan worked hard to get man from the bossom of God. Our theme for this month as prescribed to be Pentecost month meaning the great festival that marks the birth of the Christian church by the power of the Holy Spirit is abling the community to understand Sin and God s mighty power to liberate us. It is God s loving kindness that started His work for us, every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows" (James 1:17), this text reminds us that God's nature is inherently good, and God s provident grace catches our need of a Savior. Sin is defined as rebellion against, or resistance to the direction of supreme authority and enmity (hate/bad feeling) toward, avoidance of or hatred of the good. Because of our being finite (limited) we cannot be bounded to purity par lance, but that we come to God in order to purify us, connect us to His loving kindness to give us forgiveness and continue life focusing on His words and Christ likeness character. When we become stubborn God s love becomes more stubborn. That reminds us of one of the most-loved verses in the Bible: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23) God s love is persistent, unrelenting and stubborn. As the Psalmist said, God s love is eternal. (Psalm 136) We may become stubborn, but God never comes to a point when God gives up on us or that God no longer loves us.

3 Volume 8 Number 6 Page 3 D NEWSBITS HIGHLIGHTS OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN SCCD CHURCH LIFE AND MINISTRY FOR EY OFFERING TO GOD WHAT IS DUE HIM... WORSHIP LIFE 1. Received in the flock our new Choir Conductor for Chancel Choir in the person of Ms. Beulah Dumasig on September 2010, Ma am Beulah is a faculty of Phil. Missionary Institute. 2. SCCD designated as one of the centers of LCSMC Piano Yes! Program with Recital for the second time held in SCCD on May 7,2011. SCCD contributed 6 promising piano scholars to this program some of whom especially the youth are now providing piano accompaniment in the Children s Church. 3. Included in the Liturgy a Liturgical Drama that is incorporated where cross curtain shall be opened within the portion of the Liturgy reading of scripture until postlude, to represent the light coming in as Good News being shared to man. 4. Introduction and setting of Psalmist Coordinating Council as governing body to take care of music life, praise and worship trainings and choir monitoring on discipline. CHRISTIAN EDUCATION AND NURTURE 1. Sunday school classes from pre-school to adults have become a regular Sunday routine. The Children s Sunday School continues to get a good number with the Outreaches being part of it. About 50% of the children Sunday schoolers are from the said Outreach areas. 2. Recognized some 25 members of the Christian Youth Fellowship who graduated from the Purpose Driven Life (PDL) Sessions offered to the CYF in their Saturday sessions by the Pastoral Team specifically Pastor Bea. Graduates shall involve to SCCD Outreach and Home Bible Study ministry. 3. Thursday Bible Study offering courses/module study materials to enhance and equip leaders and members of the Church facilitated by the Pastoral Team. 4. SCCD was recognized as one of the LCSMC churches who participate regularly in the Teachers Empowerment Program using these materials in the Sunday school and outreach classes affirming mainline evangelical Protestant identity to which UCCP hails from. Our very own Pastor Bea was part of the writers pool, curriculum review and reading team to come up with 3 year cycle SS material of the LCSMC. 5. Regular monthly workshop for Sunday School and Outreach Teachers with input workshop on Music Appreciation, Arts and Craft, Accelerated Learning, Book Review, Proper Hygiene on Dental Dare, this is in response to nurture and groom teachers for Children s ministry. 6. Successful Kids Camp with 33 campers and 17 Counsellors and Staff at Ptr. Jim Sycip Retreat House, Brgy. Malabag Mataas na Burol Silang Cavite, first to held a 4 days and 3 nights camping outside UCCP Sabang vicinity. This is aimed towards more learning experience, independence, training and development both for kids and young people. 7. Successful Youth Camp with 39 campers and 12 Counsellors and Staff held at Ptr Jim Sycip s Retreat House 5 days and 4 nights camping. This is aimed towards more learning experience, MEMBERSHIP GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT 1. Received formally a total of 13 new members into the church fold during the year after attending a 2- session Discovery/Membership Class. 2. Baptized and received a total of 13 young people after attending the one quarter Communicants Class. 3. Sustained Membership Renewal Campaign now in its third year in cooperation with the UCCP National campaign for membership census with corresponding giving of Annual Denomination Contribution. 4. Strong Church Recognized Organizations with the CYF getting significant number in terms of membership attendance gathering new faces from the community and the overwhelming come back of the CYAF as an organization and hoped to be felt in the ministry. 5. Ministry to members abroad through sending of monthly newsletters keeping them connected and updated on SCCD church life and setting up SCCD website where all information about SCCD life could be read. Members Abroad Sunday in February had been designated as a yearly observance beginning A number of OFW members regularly send their support to the church. 6. Sending of 2 lay leaders in the Conference offered Lay Formation Program to widen the pool of lay volunteers in the various ministries of the church. 7. Formed Nurturing the Elders as quarterly fellowship and continuing education to the Elders of the Church were dialogues and teaching enhancement are part of the input. 8. Reached the average of 200 worshipers for the past 3 months

Continuing finishing works in the church and school building with completed projects during the period as follows: Canopy grand stairway and tiling Communion Table with varnish and carving of In Remembrance of Me Altar Works and Church Sanctuary Painting and Improvements through the ministry of the BOT and Architect Marie Amistoso. Installed Mezzanine Railing Upcoming works: painting works of the Multi Purpose Hall Varnishing and detailing of all Church doors including removal of rust and painting of Church Window frames Curtaining of Frontage Cross DLA Creek side complete rip rapping Installation of DLA entrance gate canopy Painting and tiling works of Admin Offices Painting of NKP Classrooms and HE Room Stairway slab works/west wing rooms slab works Irrigation canal repair works Putting up of 3 rd floor provision and stairs of DLA in the amount of P628, Actual funds in the amount of P84, for the purchase of baby grand piano for church use that was birthed from the Hayag Couple. 11. Undertaken Fund Generation Projects namely Project Nehemiah 6 Altar Glitter for altar finishing works with funds raised to date P65, and Color the Season 3, for ongoing finishing works in the church building generating P8, Dedication of the Temporary Parsonage in March 2011 with the full occupancy of Pastors Ronell and Bea Hernandez in Greensborough, the previously dedicated Parsonage 100 meters north of the church. in 2009, owned by Bro. Efren Frani is now under repair and renovation according to availability of funds. CHRISTIAN WITNESS AND SERVICE (MISSION AND OUTREACH) 1. Gathered about 218 children in the two-week longsummer VCS in church, Daang Nia, Mary Cris and Simborio Outreach with a significant increase in volunteers especially from the youth. 2. Sustained distribution of rice, goodies, and other household items to Simborio and Daang NIA Outreaches through the periodic sending of balikbayan shipments from the Hayag couple who are based in the US. 3. Sustained partnership with Philhealth as SCCD Collection Center gathering about 43 households in the community as regular members and enlisting 191 household in the Indigent Members Program of the Provincial Health Office. Philhealth Ministry now is on its 2 nd batch listing of Indigent Members. 4. Continued communication and partnership with sister churches in the US namely UCC Holmdel who is supporting two scholars in the DLA and Asian American Ecumenical Church who has served as conduit of donations to SCCD from members in the US. 5. Typhoon Rehabilitation Program set-up as aftermath of Typhoon Ondoy in October 2009, funds are primarily for environmental care and preservation advocacy work and helping of churches affected by calamities. Out of this program, the Vermi-Veggie Garden was put up making use of vermi earthworm in decomposing biodegradable wastes and its castings as compost for fertilizer now being shared to other LCSMC Churches such as UCCP Calumpang. 6. Send off 8 missionaries to Palawan, a Mission Challenge Ministry of UCCP SCCD that was birthed to produce Missions team and future Church Workers of SCCD. CHRISTIAN STEWARDSHIP AND RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT 1. There was a progressive increase of 28.1% in tithes for 2010 praising God s amazing grace given the global economic crisis for the past 2 years. Overall, the total collection from primary sources (tithes, loose offering and Sunday school) increased by 18.7% a big indication of disciplined giving and consciousness of Christian stewardship among members. Increased giving of Wider Mission Support to LCSMC with figures below showing the past six years giving , no definite % , % , % , % , % , % , % SCCD was noted to be on top (2 nd ) of the four churches in the Conference that has WMS contribution reaching 6 digits as per reflected in Annual Session Report in 2011 held at UCCP Buenavista May 19-20, ON SCCD SPECIAL MINISTRIES 1. On DLA. Recognition Status of the Disciples Learning Academy by the Dept. of Education was granted in May 2009 after almost two years of waiting. Chaplaincy services being provided to the school 2. Submission of Feasibility Study to CDA as per requirement for Sabang Disciples Multi Purpose Cooperative to take off with her multi business venture. SDMPC has now 61 members with P255, in assets. Registration from the CDA is being awaited. SDMPC is now operating the DLA School Canteen, Dishwashing and Fabric Conditioner, Credit and Loan, Grocery, Rice and Xerox Copier Machine business. 3. Scholarship Program now catering to 24 scholars enrolled in the DLA, 1, high school, 7 piano scholars and 2 college students availing of the educational loan grant. 4. Adult Literacy Program provided to some parents of our indigent scholars enrolled in the DLA are now incorporated to Home Bible Study program. 5. Chaplaincy to Serenity House of Sobriety with Pastors taking turns in providing pastoral leadership in their Sunday worship services at least twice a month and Bible Study facilitation 6.Communication network to reach out to members abroad as well as friends, mission partners of SCCD through the net and monthly INVOLVEMENT IN WIDER JUDICATORIES 1. Hosting of LCSMC activities namely: LCSMC Annual Muzikaloob with 600 youth in November 2011 LCSMC CWA Valentine Fellowship February 2011 LCSMC CYF Sports Fellowship in April 2011 LCSMC UCM Fellowship Piano Yes Recital in May 2011 Hosting of UMCC Fellowships in April Church Workers Participation to first assembly of newly formed Middle Luzon 3. Jurisdiction in Condora La Union October Mission Work in North East Nueva Ecija Associate Conference in January 2011 as part of the Immersion of the LCSMC UCWO Annual Retreat. 5. Exchange Pulpit done twice during the year with UCCP Dulong Bayan and UCCP Sulukan. 6. Sending Off 8 members of UCCP Sabang for Palawan Mission Challenge, a one year education program for mission that is aimed to educate members on mission and harvest future church workers. Workshop as always is led by Elder Juliet Dayrit a teacher by profession; inputs shall be shared by Sis. Ney Poculan our resident Librarian on Learning through Reading: Book Review. CEN SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM THRU MONTHLY INPUT. In response to the vision and mission in edifying the Church through education and nurturing. SCCD is serious in the realization of equipping the leaders/teachers so as to dispense a well balanced and energized teaching force of the Church. SCCD Church Worker to undergo further studies. Pastor Bea as endorsed by the UCCP Sabang to continue her further studies commencing EY with approve action from the Church Council, Ministerial Formation Committee of the Lowland Cavite South Manila Conference during the 13 th Annual Session held at UCCP Buenavista. As of this writing Pastor Bea is already enrolled to UTS under Doctor of Ministry Program. The Altar works and Church Sanctuary Improvement which commenced on April 18, 2011 is now on its finishing stage. ALTAR GLITTER series launched during SCCD s 84 th Anniversary now has 2 phase: one is the Mezzanine and Altar Works. To date Mezzanine has already received P28, and Altar Glitter has P66, Architect Amistoso will assume responsibility responded by the Boards approval for the following Sanctuary and Church Improvements of UCCP Sabang Project Nehemiah ALTAR GLITTER and Sanctuary Improvements updates: ALTAR and SANCTUARY Improvements (including labour, scaffolding, painting, varnishing of doors, details, panelling and truss painting to be completed in 1.5 months is costed to expense at P40,000-50,000. KIDS CAMP Testimony UCCP-SCCD KIDS CAMP 2011 By Krizelle De Ocampo "Let the Children Come" is this year s theme for Kids Camp Attended by 38 children of SCCD headed by our Pastors Ronell and Bea Hernandez, together with kuya Avinson Matro as our Senior Camp Leader. The very first Kids Camp held outside the church compound was blessed by God s provision last May 9-12, 2011 at Mataas na Burol Brgy. Malabag Silang Cavite. Four days and three nights away from our family... Wow! so exciting. Kids are divided into five flocks namely... Job, Samuel, Jeremiah, Bible and Peace with our youth councillors namely... Ate Anjell, Ate Joy, Ate Mariel, Ate Mitch. Ate Bethel, Ate Shaira, Ate Cherlene and Kuya Darwin. This year s Camp offered several activities like Bible studies, group dynamics, fun games and talent sharing. Everyone participated in the said activities. But the most memorable for us is the "Treasure Hunting". We showed a lot of efforts and cooperation among members of our group. We were like mga Street Children", "mga Basang sisiw" or whatever you may call it. We really had fun doing that game. Mga bata pa po talaga kami. Eldon Ash Reyes awarded Best Camper because of his active participation in all our activities. The Camp seemed too short for us, but very memorable because of the challenging activities and the friendship we built among our fellow campers. So, i wish that the next year s Camp will provide more days and night to spend for more challenging activities, ideas, values and learning from God s Word. Glory to God. 7 Page 7 Volume 8 Number 6 In the EYES of FAITH by: Allyan Jell Samonte Freedom from Sin In the Old Testament the Israelites have burnt offerings to sacrifice in the atonement of their sins. After hundred of years in the New Testament, there is still this ritual of offering, of sacrificing but not anymore through burning, it was through Jesus Christ the Son of God. In Romans 3 verses 21 until 26 we see how Paul speaks of Jesus freeing us from sin. This is why we speak now of Freedom from sin. Sin could be a state or a condition that enslaves humanity. I remember on the third day of our camp when a group of residents from Serenity House of sobriety visited us and delivered their testimonies, one of them told us Ang akala ko dinadala ko yung hilig ko, pero baliktad pala, ako na pala yung dinadala ng hilig ko This is what happens to us when we are bound by sin, we are enslaved by it, there is a block that separates and takes us away from God. Sin in any amount would create a space between us and God. What we can do is to recognize these sins that hinder us from pursuing God and His holiness. God wanted us to recognize our sins because it is when we only understand our weaknesses and consider relying on the atoning sacrifice of Jesus. Freedom from Sin and Freedom in Christ. The concept of freedom that we are talking about is a subject that is really hard to explain. We see freedom in so many different meanings based on our own situation. We define the phrase above based on how we define freedom. Is freedom a situation or a condition wherein we get to do what we want? Does freedom means we are to break the rules or all rules are lifted? If we define freedom this way, we could be talking about the worldly freedom where we experience everything, no holds barred. But the freedom we know in Christ is the freedom from sin that holds us and that enslaves us. We all have been freed through the blood that was shed on the cross and this makes us Xtraordinary. The God who have sacrificed His own Son for the forgiveness of our sins. Before I end this article I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone, the church, for supporting and praying for the success of the recent summer youth camp with the theme MYX: Making You Xtraordinary. One testimony I would like to share was that all through out the camp there were only two instances when it rained hard: the first night and the last dawn of the camp. It was truly a blessing, all the campers and staff were rejoicing for this event because it was reported on the news that a super typhoon was to land on the week of our camp. Everyone was worried but through prayers everything were put into place by God. The joy of being a participant in that camp was overwhelming. It was a blessing to be part of such event. Truly, we are all xtraordinary with God in our hearts. YOUTH Camp Testimony Making Me Xtraordinary by Nicole Frani Games, fun, new friends and words of God all in one, can such a place exist? In a world where computer games, PSP s and other modern gadgets capture the attention of the youth today, is there still a place where we can experience new things, enjoy games, meet new friends and still be able to study and be enlightened by God s word? The answer would definitely be YES! Last May 23-27, 2011, the Youth Camp 2011 MYX(Making You Xtraordinary) was held in Mataas na Burol, Malabag,Silang. With 39 participating youth, 12 councilors and staffs and two supervising church pastors. The camp was started by a game called name game where we learned to trust other people and most importantly God. After the game we started the house rules discussion, groupings and tent making. It was then followed by the evening worship where we sang songs for God. In camp we were able to get back to the time of childhood, playing Palarong Pinoy was great, joined group dynamics, flag making, bible study, amazing race, pick ahh, and was visited by some Serenity residents who enlightened us about addiction. During the camp we also had Bible study, morning and evening devotions, Biblico Theological Reflections (BTR s) that was lead by chosen speakers and Pastors. We were also informed about the different ministries a youth can join in the church. On that same day we also became aware of the growing environmental problems by the treasure hunt activity headed by the counselors and staffs. I even heard a co-camper said madaling magtapon, mahirap maglinis. The last night of the camp was one of the highlights of the camp, every youth was there to see the camp fire, sing songs, play games, and perform the cheer and yell the groups had prepared. We were awake until midnight enjoying the games and company. At the last day of the camp we packed our things and continued to the awarding of the groups and proceeded to the closing ceremony. Each and every youth that joined this year's camp had surely, not only gained lessons about life, on being responsible disciplined, faithful and friendly but also had experienced spiritual growth.

Construction works in the school building which commenced on April 4, 2011 were able to beat the set work schedule on time for the opening of classes this June 6. Primarily finishing the concrete slab work in the west wing rooms providing space for roof deck and stairway to the 3 rd floor of the main building, this significant accomplishment makes easier the continuing works in the said third floor where the H.E. house, audio visual hall cum classroom are to be located decongesting the rooms in the lower levels. It is targeted that by summer 2012 building works will be completed in the 3 rd floor making it ready for occupancy in next school year opening, that, is June With the additional space in the school building, facilities will be improved and teachinglearning experience will be made more effective and meaningful. These improvements being undertaken is in keeping with the DepEd direction of closer monitoring of private schools to comply with standard requirements in operating basic education school sites. Enrolment for SY picking up. As of May 31, 2011 total enrolment in the DLA has totaled to 193 which includes the old pupils who have not yet registered but signified intention of staying. This figure is only short of 7 enrollees to hit last year s number. SPIC in sync with Dasmarinas City goals. The Scholarship Program for Indigent Children (SPIC) which is a mission partnership project of the DLA and SCCD, one of the components of the SCCD Scholarship Program turns out to be in line with the social welfare development goal of the city government of Dasmarinas as expressed in its D-CARE project, Dasmarinas Children s Assistance for Relevant Education. This was presented by Ms. Josefina Brinas, Filipino Coordinator of the DepEd Dasmarinas City Division Office during the 1 st DepEd Private Schools Administrators Executive Meeting held on May 20, 2011 at FCIEC Administration Building, appealing for active participation among private schools through donations in cash or in kind, or adopting street children into their classrooms providing them education. While the SPIC scholars in the DLA are not exactly street children, many of them are from the nearby depressed communities located in Daang NIA and Simborio. This school year, SPIC has 23 scholars (updated figure as of May 30), 14 of whom are considered indigents, with family income way below poverty line. About P131, is needed to be sourced out for the General Scholarship Support. Total fund requirement of this SPIC for SY is P376, covering tuition fees, matriculation and books with cost of books shouldered by the parents and paid through volunteer services like night guarding and canteen serving. School Board designates SEAO. The School Board in its regular meeting on May 26, 2011 created the School External Affairs Office (SEAO) designating Elder Lina Reyes to head it. Primary responsibility of the SEAO is to promote the DLA, its programs, projects and future directions in the church and wider community making DLA more visible and within strong consciousness of the founding church. The SEAO will also serve as information officer especially on school fund generation projects like the DCBU (Deposit Contribution Build-Up) and support of Scholarship Program for Indigent Children. Elder Lina Reyes who has been seating in the DLA School Board for some years now was also re-called to complete the unexpired term of Mr. Jun Belostrino, Vice Chairperson who resigned due to growing demands in work preventing him from attending meetings. SPECIAL COURSE Module 2. Leaders are equaled to a noble work for God s ministry. This dimension also gives us the courage to always learn and study the word to be approved by God. In view of this sanctity of leadership, we are offering a basic course to be completed by all members especially occupying leadership positions so as to be updated and spiritually grow in the ministry while taking the lead in God s flock. This is to be integrated in the Thursday Bible Study (8-9PM only) under the leadership of the Pastoral Team.
