2 2 Save the Date 6/4-11 Youth Mission Trip 6/5-8 Annual Conference 6/20-23 Vacation Bible School Children s Camp Scholarships As many of you are aware, Bay s Mountain Camp will not be open until Because we realize the importance of a camping experience for young people, the church will be providing a limited number of $100 scholarships to assist our children who would like to attend a Christian Camp of their choice in our area. Please fill out the necessary registration forms supplied by your chosen camp and submit a copy to Jackie Rose. Please allow ample time for processing your request. Please submit the needed information as soon as possible. 3 3 Church Family News Condolences to Joe Sherlin and family on the recent death of his mother Congratulations to Katy Lawrence on her graduation from Asbury Seminary Congratulations to Renee McNees for graduating with her Masters degree in Nursing JUMC 2016 Narrative Ministry Spending Plan Thanks Living: Giving Thanks Through our Stewardship Our spending plan for the ministry we intend to accomplish in 2016 totals $461,866 and 23,000 volunteer hours. Presented in narrative format this year, it is posted on the church website and is available in printed form in the church office and in the church narthex. What we are doing together as God s Church in Jonesborough to make disciples for Jesus Christ in order to transform the world occurs in three major focus areas worship, nurture and outreach. In terms of the dollars and volunteer hours that enable us to be in ministry, it works out as follows. Worship $216,656 10,000 hours Nurture $157,902 5,000 hours Outreach $ 87,308 8,000 hours Supporting these ministries and included above is the cost of maintaining buildings, property and equipment, and providing staff persons, supplies and services to maintain them - $270,636. The narrative ministry plan document describes and celebrates what we specifically do as we worship God, strengthen and grow our faith, and reach out to each other, the community around us and all the people around God s world to share God s redeeming love in word and deed. The document also has space for each of us to record and keep track of our personal, prayerful promises to support our church s ministries this year with dollars, volunteer time and prayer. In addition to generously supporting our ministry plan this year, we are challenged to support the $60,000 needed to repair and upgrade the main parking lot. We have about $19,000 in hand and need to raise the remaining $41,000. See the Trustees article for more information. Parking Lot Project The Trustees are kicking off the Parking Lot Project by posting a sign in the church narthex that will show our progress toward our $60,000 financial goal of re-doing the parking lot. As you well know, there has been an ongoing problem with water standing in the parking lot each time it rains. This is a safety issue as well as an inconvenience. A capital fundraising committee is being assembled to look at a variety of ideas to raise the funds for the project. The Church Council approved the Committee on Finance s recommendation to make this project a capital campaign, along side of, but separate from, the 2016 ministry budget. This project will proceed when the needed funds are in hand. So, along with your regular tithing, please contribute an additional amount each week or month toward this project. Mike Dickson

4 4 Highlights of May 22, 2016 Administrative Council Meeting Trustees Committee: (1) Meetings ongoing with Town of Jonesborough to ensure compliance with agreement for the walking trail. (2) Thermometer placed in the Narthex to monitor fundraising for the parking lot project. One fund raiser will be a car show in our parking lot on October 22. (3) Will install a drain in the Fellowship Hall porch to alleviate safety hazard of pooling water. (4) Working on directional signs outside and inside the church for the church office and hours of operation. Finance and Stewardship Committee: (1) Updated Council on the church s endowment fund to support the Music Academy of Jonesborough, a ministry of the church. (2) Will adjust the frequency and content of the worship Stewardship Moments to include both personal testimony and how our monies are used. (3) Addressed the need to ensure that contributions received by the church for a designated purpose are only for existing, approved ministries and projects. (4) Reminder that Council approval is required for all fundraising projects before they can be started. (5) June meeting will focus on moving the parking lot project funding forward so the work can be scheduled and completed no later than October. (6) Requested approval for three routine bank resolutions to update authorized check signers and open a separate checking account for dedicated funds (Council approved). (7) Received Council referral to determine the best way(s) to keep members informed of where we are financially (weekly bulletins, monthly newsletter, etc.). Parsonage Committee: (1) Parsonage doors re-keyed; keys kept by parsonage family, chair of the parsonage committee, and the church s administrative assistant. Use by anyone else requires documented consent by Pastor or parsonage committee chair. (2) Refrigerator and range replaced; old ones donated. (3) Riding lawnmower requiring frequent repairs; needs replacement within 2-3 years. (4) Yard clean-up scheduled for June 25. Children s Ministry: (1) June Vacation Bible School plans in place; help needed with recreation and guides. (2) May 15 outing to Bright s Zoo very successful with 33 children and 27 adults. (3) Plans to get more of the toddler group acclimated to Sanctuary activities. Youth Ministry: (1) Will load the trailer on June 1 for the Edisto mission trip, leave on June 4 and return on June 11; 15 youth and adults going, four for the first time. (2) Upcoming events: helping with Vacation Bible School, parking cars for Jonesborough Days, doing mission work with area churches July through JAMA. (3) Three seniors will receive Bibles on July 10; Addison Rowe competing in State high jump competition May 26. Missions Committee: (1) Thanks to all persons and groups who helped host the two Family Promise families this month and to the new volunteers who helped with overnight supervision. (2) New one-day-a-week after-school child care program focused on music is being formed; grant from the Holston Conference Children in Poverty being requested. Will include singing, hand bell and drum bucket lessons, other activities, snacks, and perhaps homework help. Will start with 6 first grade students from Jonesborough Elementary School. Pastor s Report: (1) Good attendance over 300 at the JAMA Community Worship at David Crockett High School. (2) Angie Huffine is our lay member to Annual Conference. (3) Evangelism Committee members will give away ice pops on our front porch during Jonesborough s July 2 parade. (4) Congratulations to Katy Lawrence who just graduated from Seminary. (5) We welcomed two new members on May 22; will welcome another new member on May 29. (6) Members encouraged to take pictures when attending a church event so they can be shared on the Sanctuary screen on Sunday mornings.

5 5 Diane s Closet was very successful once again. With all the donations received, not only from our church but also from the Presbyterian Church, we were able to help 40 families! Thank you to everyone who donated the things for us to give away, as well as to those who gave of their time. Diane s Closet couldn t happen without you! Maggie Polden Jonesborough Days Happenings Jonesborough Days Parade will be held July 2 at 10 am Our Youth will be parking cars in the Church parking lot on Friday, July 1, and Saturday, July 2, starting at 9 am each day we would love to have adults to help them. Contact Mary Ann Clark, , if you can help. Sisters of Faith will be parking cars in the Second Avenue lot for the parade. The Evangelism Committee will be handing out frozen treats from the Church porch during the parade. We will also have live bluegrass music from the porch beginning at 9 am leading up to the start of the parade. Come out and enjoy fellowship as we reach out to our community. Youth News The Youth and adults will be heading out June 4-11 to Edisto Island for our Mission Trip. Please pray for our safety on the road there and back, and also for the families with whom we ll be working. It s hard work, but lots of fun, and very rewarding.

6 Yarn with a Purpose Can you sew? It s not just about yarn. Keep reading to learn how you can help. Spread the word with your friends, relatives and neighbors. Our little group continues to grow and expand into other areas. We recently learned that Niswonger Children s Hospital has an ongoing need for little doll size hospital gowns and blankets. They can use per WEEK! Ladies within and outside the group stepped up to the challenge to sew the itty-bitty hospital gowns. The children love to dress and cover their little dolls. Some of the ladies have even made teeny hats for the dolls to match the blankets. Small pouches/totes to hide their medications or monitors have been knitted or crocheted, but can also be sewn. 6 In addition to making warm hats and shawls for our veterans and nursing home residents this coming winter, in the last three months Yarn with a Purpose has handmade and donated: 105 doll-size hospital gowns 45 little totes/pouches for meds/monitors 197 doll-size blankets 5 baby blankets The majority of these children are at or below the poverty level. Anything they receive is a blessing that they love (both the boys and the girls). Remember the Holston challenge... Bring it Home... Children in Poverty. Ask yourself: However small, what can I do? Everyone is busy, so no need to come to the group; work at home and we will gladly include your donation when we deliver to Niswonger s. We meet the first and third Tuesday of every month from 10 am to noon in the Good News Fellowship building. 7 7 Sisters of Faith Madelyn Rohrer will host the June meeting at her home June 9 at 6 pm. The July meeting is scheduled for July 14, at 6 pm. Dinner will be provided. We will be painting the downstairs children s classroom, so please wear clothes to paint in. We re also going to be parking cars in the Second Avenue lot, July 2, for the Jonesborough Days Parade. Our children had a great outing at Bright s Zoo on May 15,. They got to feed the giraffes, enjoy the other animals and fellowship together. Meet our new members... Robert and Patrice Wells live in Chuckey, where they retired from Wisconsin. They have two adult children who live in Phoenix and Denver. Welcome, Robert and Patrice!

8 8 Dear Church Family: It is not just a concern of mine, but also one of Pastor Karen s, that the Prayer Room not be left empty during morning worship. Prayer is the most important part of the church. Several people have said they would like to be Prayer Room Warriors, but they don t want to miss the church service. We all want to be fed, but being in the Prayer Room once or twice a year can be your service back to the church. You are praying by yourself that the people in the service will be fed. You are not missing the service you are being of service to your church through prayer! Our Prayer Room is not just another room in our church. This small space has been set aside for a quiet time to spend with God to intercede for our church. We have a dedicated group of people who go to the Prayer Room during both church services and lift up our pastor, our choir, the children s sermon and our entire congregation both those who can be in church as well as the shut-ins. They are called Prayer Warriors, but this does not mean they are super eloquent in praying; they are just regular people like you and me, who know the importance of prayer. Your help and involvement are especially important at a time when our churches are being attacked in many ways. I know that your presence in the Prayer Room continues to make a significant difference in our church. Pastor Karen and others participating in the morning services have come to rely on the power of our prayers during both services. Thank you, Linda Poland Annual Conference... will be held Sunday through Wednesday, June 5 through June 8. Pastor Karen and Angie Huffine, your lay delegate, will attend. We will take the Holston Conference Children in Poverty offering we collected; have a send-off for the mission backpacks you created; celebrate worship together; set the Annual Conference budget, and so much more. A report will follow in the July newsletter.

9 9 June Mission One Acre Café One Acre Café was established to further address the escalating issues of hunger and food insecurity in our community. One Acre Café utilizes the model provided by the One World Everybody Eats Foundation, joining the growing family of more than forty other community cafes across the country. One Acre Café offers our community healthy and nutritious food in a warm and inviting space. There are suggested donations for those who can pay or pay it forward and the ability to volunteer in exchange for a meal for those who cannot. The Café offers a passionate, skilled chef who works with local farmers to produce amazing cuisine. It is run on donations, and Volunteers are integral to the day-to-day operations. Whether you are volunteering for your meal or simply giving your time, it is the coming together of a community that creates the heart of the café. One Acre Café is located at 603 W.
