I Peter 2:1 Midterm elections are coming up and I'm not looking forward to it. At least it's not the presidential election. I'm not ready to face one of those again. As Christians, though, I think it is important to make sure we bring our Christian faith into our responses to the election. Does this mean I will tell you how to vote? Absolutely not. I trust you to seek to follow the teachings of Jesus as you vote. I also know that the issues are complicated, and I may be wrong about how to vote. I encourage you not to let anyone tell you how to vote. Rather, prayerfully consider the candidates and the issues. There are things I think we, as Christians, should do regarding the election. First, we should not spread slander or untruths. (I say untruths because we may believe what we are saying is true. Something is not technically a lie unless we are telling an untruth to deliberately deceive others.) When we hear something about a candidate or an issue, do not immediately believe it and pass it on. Check it out on a political fact-finder web site. Don t just believe it is true because you want it to be true. I have fact checked statements by Republicans, Democrats, conservatives, and liberals, and found that all of them stretch the truth at times. Check out their statements. Especially do not pass on negative comments and stories about candidates unless you have proof that they are true. For example, during the 2008 election I received an claiming to prove that one of the candidates was the Anti-Christ, and providing scripture and other proof of this. Let us not be a part of such untruthful and insulting behavior and speech. As Peter says in the scripture above, we are to rid ourselves of lying and insulting language. The second thing we can do it recognize that, while as Christians we share certain values, we may have different opinions of how to best accomplish those goals. For example, Jesus teaches that we are to help those who are poor. That is a very important teaching of Jesus. Indeed, he says to help those who are poor or sick or in prison is to help him, and to refuse to help them is to refuse to help him. As Christians, we know that Jesus taught we should help the poor. But we may have different ideas about how to best help the poor. So let us love and honor and respect one another even when we disagree about how to follow Jesus teachings. As the election approaches, I encourage you to pray daily for wisdom. Search your hearts, and scripture, and the teachings of our faith, before deciding how to vote. Vote not just on how an issue or candidate will affect you, but how it will affect our country, and how it will impact our greatgrandchildren. Remember that God has given us the world, and that we are to be stewards. We are to care for our world. As someone has said, The world does not belong to us. We borrow it from our grandchildren. And throughout the election season, seek to live with kindness and patience towards those with whom we disagree. If we can do that, we are truly bringing our faith into the election process.
