How would you like to be remembered? Planning your funeral also reminds you that death is inevitable. The Lenten display in our church sanctuary startled us with the Latin phrase memento mori, in English, remember, you must die. Those who study human behavior note that a great number of people will not even consider writing a will; they do not want to be reminded that death is certain to come. Our celebration of Easter is a powerful reminder that physical death must come but it is not the end of the story! For Christian people, we are guaranteed the gift of eternal life if our earthly life has been lived in Christ. St John s Gospel states forthrightly: whoever believes in Him may not die, but may have eternal life, St Matthew clarifies the point; Jesus has saved us, but we must accept that salvation. Those who live a Christ-like life ( what you do for the least among you, you do for me ) will hear the words well done, good and faithful servant! If it makes no difference how we live our lives, then what did Jesus save us from? The agony of Jesus on Good Friday reminds us that the choices we make in this life have eternal consequences. This is my thirty-ninth year as a priest. Since I came to St Charles thirty-two years ago, I have attended at least two hundred wakes per year (our annual average of funerals). That works out to almost 6,500 parishioners who have died. That number of living people would fill our church about ten times over. Everyone deserves a decent funeral. Funeral homilies often place the deceased in heaven. But perhaps we err if we imply that. We have all known some truly holy and sincerely virtuous people. If they are not with the saints in heaven, we would wonder: who is? But what of those others whose commitment to Christ is very limited, or somewhat casual, or practically non-existent? We can hear the Rich Man s words in the Gospel: Send someone to them from the dead! Then they would believe! We have such a Messenger: He experienced death and then rose to eternal life and he invites us to share in that life with him. Lent has offered us forty days to ponder the big questions and to re-commit ourselves to a Christ-like way of life. Now Eastertime will offer us fifty days to celebrate what Jesus has done for us. Listen to the Gospel stories describing events after the Resurrection. When those who had been closest to the Lord encounter Him after He rose from the dead, they are at first unable to recognize Him. Only after He speaks, only after they ponder His new existence do they come to believe. The Apostles and Disciples, previously timid and fearful, became zealous and courageous: those who experienced the Risen Christ then went out and changed the world Our experience with the Risen Christ in our weekly worship, in the Scriptures, in the Sacraments, in our encounters with one another should move us to change our world. Perhaps not as dramatically as we read in the Acts of the Apostles, but certainly within our families, where we work, and in our associations with others. Remember the old question? If you were on trial for being a follower of Jesus Christ, would there be enough evidence in your life to convict you?

5 Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord NO COST ANNULMENTS Older folks remember that once a couple married in the Catholic Church and lived together, the marital bond was in place ''till death we do part." In the last forty years, the Church has come to recognize that some marriages were just "not right" from the beginning. When a marriage breaks up and the civil divorce is final, marriages can be considered for a church annulment. Unfortunately, there are lots of rumors and poor information when it comes to annulments: "it takes years" or thousands of dollars" are required. In truth, most cases are decided within a year and the suggested marriage tribunal fee was $450; and that fee could be waived for those in financial difficulty. That tribunal fee did not "buy an annulment" but it did help to pay for tribunal salaries and expenses. On May 30 th, 2014, Bishop Lennon announced a new policy for the Diocese of Cleveland: all annulment cases will now be accepted and processed free of any charge. The Diocese of Cleveland will fully subsidize the work of the diocesan marriage tribunal. This new policy is effective immediately. The form of Catholic marriage is free consent given before a priest/deacon and two witnesses. For those who require an annulment from a former marriage, please contact the priest/deacon of your choice and he will help you prepare and file your case-now free of charge!
