3 St. Charles Borromeo Church February 26, 2017 LENTEN BOOKS AVAILABLE Back in Advent, we made available copies of a seasonal prayer reflection booklet entitled, The Little Blue Book. These are published by the Diocese of Saginaw and contain helpful daily entries to serve as an aid to prayer. Anyone interested in a copy of The Little Black Book (Lent 2017) are asked to stop at the Parish Office. Quantities are limited. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS, LECTORS, AND ALTAR SERVERS New liturgical minister schedules are available for pick up in the main sacristy and the altar server sacristy. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS AND LECTORS Sign-up sheets for Ash Wednesday Masses are in the sacristy. Merici Chapel How many times in your life have you said, I know I should have called or I was busy I forgot, or I just don t have the time right now maybe later. We could go on and on making excuses for our actions or lack thereof. What excuse will you give to Jesus when you meet Him and He asks, Why didn t you stop and see me? I was waiting for you in Merici Chapel, just for us to spend some time together and talk. Lent begins this Ash Wednesday, March 1. Ashes will be blessed and distributed at all Masses on that day at: 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:00am, 4:00pm, 7:00pm It is our parish practice to offer a Lenten Retreat. For 2017, we have lined up something very special. On the Wednesdays of Lent, we will offer a two-part Lenten Retreat Experience. The dates are: Wednesdays: March 8, 15, 22, 29, and April 5 The Scripture readings of Ash Wednesday instruct us that the practice of Lent must be more than the sign of ashes. Lent is a time for Prayer, Almsgiving, and Fasting. On each Wednesday, we will offer a simple meal of bread, homemade soup, and a beverage from 5:00 till 7:00pm in the Corrigan Gym. This meal will be offered in the spirit of Lenten simplicity. (FASTING) All parishioners are invited. There is no charge, but any free-will offerings made will be given to support programs that feed the poor (St Augustine on West 14 th, St Malachi on West 25 th, West Side Catholic Center, St Charles second Thursday Hot Meal at Holy Name, Harvard & Broadway). (ALMSGIVING) Also, on each Wednesday, we have invited a guest priestcelebrant for our 7:00pm Mass. (PRAYER) The homily at those Masses will be the Lenten Retreat presentation. On Wednesday, March 15, St Charles will also participate in the diocesan-wide offering of the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confessions) from 5:00 till 8:00pm. So plan now, for the Wednesdays of Lent, to attend our Afternoon Soup Meal and then the 7:00pm Mass. And, as always during Lent, we will offer Stations of the Cross on Wednesdays at 1:45pm and on Fridays at. The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confessions) will be offered after all Lenten Weekend Masses (except the Sunday 5:30pm Mass) in addition to Saturdays from 3:00-3:45 and 6:45 to. Forty Club members pay no dues nor do they elect any officers. Forty Club members simply attend daily Mass during Lent. St Charles Parish is also blessed with Merici Chapel, first floor of the Parish Activities Center. The Blessed Sacrament is exposed there for private prayer, personal devotions, and meditation 24/7. St Charles PTU will offer their spectacular Lenten Fish Fries on Fridays, March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 and April 7 & 14, 4:00 till 7:00pm. There s an extensive menu and take-outs are available. Are you an adult who has not been confirmed? If so, why not attend our two-session Adult Confirmation Class on Sundays, March 5 & 12, 1:00 till 2:00pm? Adult Education Director Brian Pelcin will coordinate the program. You will then be confirmed by Bishop Roger Gries on Sunday, April 2, at 2:30pm. Call the Parish Office ( ) to register. The diocese has updated and revised some aspects of the Virtus training to include changes in technology over recent years. All volunteers trained before August, 2016 must review these changes by February 28 to keep their Virtus status activated. 6 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time February 26, 2017 FRIAR ALESSANDRO: THE VOICE OF ASSISI In Concert on WVIZ/PBS Sunday, March 5 at 12:30pm Last December Franciscan Friar Alessandro presented a benefit concert at St. Charles to a "standing room only" crowd for Sister Denise Marie's Franciscans of the Little Way. Friar Alessandro has now recorded a concert at Assisi, the home of St. Francis, in Italy. That concert will be broadcast on Sunday, March 5, on WVIZ/ PBS, at 12:30pm. This concert recorded in the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, features traditional sacred standards and songs that share the humble Friar's message of hope, peace, and love. Make sure you "tune in."
