I pray and ask you every day, And wait to hear what you ll say. There has to be a reason, God ~ Open my eyes to see. Does a person need some help today? Could that help come from me? Here comes a lady with a walker, On the floor she dropped her keys. She dare not stoop to pick them up, But God gave me good knees! And there s a lonely dear old man, With a tear running down his cheek. God gave me arms and lots of time To give many hugs each week. Here comes my next door neighbor With a letter she can t see to read. God blessed me with two good eyes To immediately take care of that need. The lady living down the hall Never smiles or leaves her place. But a tap on her door with some goodies Brings a welcome smile to her face. Of course there is always the one Who loves to chat and chat. God gave me a couple good ears, to just listen and take care of that. So I guess I shouldn t ask my God, Just why am I still here. But try to help someone every day, And enjoy each precious year. Written by Joyce, a SummerHouse of Plymouth Resident Submitted by Lovie Hermsen Apt. 336 Hem your blessings with thankfulness so they don't unravel. ~Author Unknown 4

6 Prayer Shawl Ministry at Scandia Shores The Prayer Shawl Ministry at Scandia Shores has made and gifted 212 Prayer Shawls since it s beginning in 2007! Members work on their shawls throughout the month, praying for the person who will receive the shawl as they knit or crochet each stitch. The Prayer Shawl is meant to be a symbol of God s love and care to those who are experiencing a serious or lengthy illness, or have lost a loved one. The Prayer Shawl is a tangible representation of the prayers and care of the Scandia Shores community. It is a purposeful way to serve one another! We currently have about 8 regular members attending our prayer shawl meetings and several others who knit or crochet on their own and turn in the prayer shawls whenever they finish one. Prayer Shawls may be gifted to Residents by members of the Prayer Shawl Ministry, Pastoral Nurse Lori Anderson, or our Chaplain, Pastor Sherree Lane. Residents may receive a prayer shawl while they are in the hospital, transitional care/rehab or home at Scandia Shores. On occasion, we give prayer shawls to Avinity staff or residents at other Avinity Senior Living sites in unique situations. This is our opportunity to bless others beyond our doors at Scandia Shores. We hear many stories of how prayer shawls have encouraged and strengthened their recipients. It is inspiring for the group to hear how their efforts have blessed others as they have been going through difficult times. It is truly a ministry! The Prayer Shawl Ministry Group meets on the first Thursday of each month from 12:30-1:30 pm in the Rec. Room. All those who knit or crochet are welcome to join us! As we work on our shawls, we think of Residents who may be blessed by a prayer shawl, hear a short devotional, help each other with questions we may be having and pray God s blessing over any completed shawls that have been turned in that month. (We also pray over completed prayer shawls that are turned in during the Prayer Circle time on Thursdays). We accept yarn donations and some members purchase their own yarn. There are patterns, yarn, knitting and crochet needles available along with a healthy dose of encouragement from other team members. You are welcome to join us just to observe and ask questions. Please consider joining us - we always have room for more! Contact Lori Anderson, RN, Pastoral Nurse with any questions on a Tuesday or Thursday. She shares her office with Pastor Sherree Lane, located off the staff conference room, or leave a message at Ext. 48. *** Save the Date to Celebrate! Give to the Max Day 2015 is coming to Avinity! Give to the Max Day is Minnesota s annual giving holiday, sponsored by GiveMN. Mark your calendars for Thursday, November 12, 2015 to celebrate Minnesota s giving holiday, Give to the Max Day! Give to the Max Day is coming to Scandia Shores! Pancake Breakfast Thursday, November 5th from 8:30-9:30 a.m. ~ FREE WILL OFFERING ~ You can make a difference right here in your Avinity Community! Thank you for your generous support of the Avinity Foundation! 6
7 NANCY S NOTES I recently came across an article about reflections on the season of autumn. One of the points was that fall is a season of letting go. Just as the trees let go of their leaves, perhaps autumn is a good time to think about letting go of any guilt and regret we may have and concentrate on replacing those negative emotions with gratitude for all we have. It makes me think of the Horn of Plenty, a symbol of abundance and nourishment. We are so blessed to live in a country where we are free to worship, free to vote, and free to live our lives in the pursuit of happiness. Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos into order, confusion into clarity It turns problems into gifts, failures into success, the unexpected into perfect timing, and mistakes into important events. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow. -Melody Beattie Have a wonderful November! Happy Thanksgiving to all!
