2 Of Pilgrims and Peacemakers November it reminds us of the first thanksgiving and our Pilgrim forefathers. The pilgrims came to America to escape religious persecution. They were actually not called pilgrims at first. They were called Separatists because they rebelled against the official Church of England and its rules that were forced upon the people. The penalties for these Separatists conducting unofficial services included imprisonment and fines. Two of their leaders were actually executed. We cannot even imagine that actually happening. We enjoy freedom to worship and many other freedoms, thanks to those first pilgrims and many people throughout the centuries. We celebrate and give thanks for our freedoms and our rights to pursue life, liberty and happiness, which our founders believed came from God. We want to hold firmly to these foundational principles of our nation. Our nation will be voting on November 6 th. This election season we Americans have been bombarded by continual media for and against each candidate. It is overwhelming and most Americans will probably be very relieved when this election is over. We grieve at the confrontation of the debates. If the election is as close as reported, then after the election half of our population will be disappointed and upset no matter which way it turns out. Some citizens won t vote; they are skeptical: It doesn t matter who is elected because no one person can bring all the good change they promise, they say. Or, maybe it s the What s the use? attitude: My vote won t count. My spouse cancels my vote! But as responsible citizens we vote, and we thank God for that right and privilege. At the end of the day, whom do we really trust? Is our hope in America and in our politics? Do we think President Obama or Governor Romney is our Messiah? --one who can deliver us from all the troubles of our nation? Or, do we really believe God is in control of this world? When Jesus walked this earth, his disciples misunderstood this too. Some thought He would set up His earthly reign immediately. They looked to Jesus as their political hero. Certainly, He could set the ills of the world right, they thought. It was Pilate who wondered why his followers didn t fight for Him, if Jesus actually was the king of the Jews. But Jesus told Pilate, My Kingdom is not of this world. For if it was, my followers would fight. For the present, Jesus Kingdom is within each of our hearts if we will let Him rule, if we will submit to His will for our lives. One day Jesus will return as the King of kings and the Lord of lords. One day justice and peace will rule the day, for the Prince of Peace will rule the world. But for now, our job is to pray for our leaders and our nation, and to work for peace. When Jesus said, Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God, He was telling us to follow His example. He set aside His heavenly splendor and came to earth on a mission to be a mediator between God and man. He arranged a peace agreement. It cost him his life, but He was successful. God has made peace available through Christ. Now, those who are God s children through faith in Jesus Christ are called to extend His peace and reconciliation to others. You will receive a phone call/message by Tuesday no later than 4:00 pm. as to the time you need to be in the lobby for pick up. Appointments: Your departure time is based on a schedule of other resident s appointment times AND the places where those appointments are. The Activity Coordinator has to make the schedule up every Tuesday and it will be different each week. 6
