In the parable found in tochurch Office: Fax: day's Gospel, Jesus contrasts the life of a rich man and the poor Office Hours: 9 a.m. 3 p.m. (Monday Thursday) man, Lazarus, who lives in the shadow of the rich man and his Website: ish.com wealth. These Pharisees are described in Luke's bkostial@gmail.com Gospel as loving money. (Note: The Pharisees were followers of Coordinator of Religious Education: a sect of Judaism active before, during, and after Jesus' lifetime. Unfortunately, we know what is just around the corner that wonderful winter season that always seems to be so long. By the way, not to add any undue pressure to our already busy schedules, but there are only 89 shopping days left until Christmas! Over the last couple of weeks in our bulletin there have been informational inserts regarding the On Mission for the Church Alive! Planning process. I pray you have found these inserts to be informative and helpful as we get closer to our Parish Consultation Meetings next month. The insert in this week s bulletin reviews your role in the process. Every Catholic matters as we begin this important work. In our baptism, we received an invitation to grow as a follower of Jesus. Thus we should ask ourselves some questions; are we serious about our relationship with Jesus? Do we want it to be even better? How do we think Jesus is asking us to live in holiness as His disciples? Please be sure to read today s bulletin insert for On Mission for information about the consultation sessions. Please know how vitally important your presence is in attending one of the meetings. Each of us has a role in helping to spread the Gospel message. Let us not miss the opportunity to do so. Given this is the last weekend of September, our Saturday Vigil Mass will move back to Christ the King, St. Lawrence Church. Next month also happens to be October, in which we have the annual October Count in every parish of the diocese. The October Count has been a pr actice within our diocese for quite a long time. We recently shared with you the drastic drop in the numbers of Catholics attending Mass here in our diocese since the year In 2000 there were roughly 249,000 Catholics attending Mass in our diocese. Based on the October Counts in the last 15 years, we have experience a drop in Mass attendance of 100,000! These numbers are being used to help with the drafts of parish models for the On Mission for the Church Alive! Planning Process. So please be sure to attend Mass and be counted not just for the month of October but for each and every Sunday (or Saturday Vigil) of the year. We need you to help build the Kingdom here on earth by bringing people closer to Jesus. May we all continue to Learn Jesus, Live Jesus and Love Jesus! May you have a Spirit filled week. God love you, Deacon John College Open House invitation: High school juniors or seniors and their families are invited to a Get Acquainted Day Open House at Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, on Saturdays, Oct. 8, and Nov. 12. New Small Groups forming We are very excited to offer another opportunity to participate in small group sessions during the autumn season! Several groups formed during Lent are still going strong! Extremely positive comments have been received from them. Also we ve received requests from others requesting we launch more groups enabling them to participate. Small Groups are about discipleship, fellowship, companionship, discussing challenges and celebrating joys. The members of the each group decide when and where to meet in a home or at church or coffee house or restaurant or at an activity as long as you spend time sharing and praying. Please see the insert in the bulletin for more details and return the questionnaire by Sunday, October 9 th if you feel the Holy Spirit calling you to join us! Invite them to call Sister Zoe Ann at the parish office, for information about our initiation process. To educate the public about how to identify child abuse, the Protecting God s Children Workshop is available online to all parishioners and interested persons at Trivia Answer: September 25, 2016 D) St. Jerome Did you realize that the Bible was not written originally in English, nor even in a language most people could understand today? The Old Testament was written mainly in Hebrew with some Aramaic and the New Testament was mostly written in Koine Greek. St. Jerome, one of the great doctors of the church, is respected for being the person who authored a Latin ( Vulgate ) translation of the Bible. From this Vulgate version, other translations were eventually made in the vernacular, the language of the people, e.g., English, Spanish, German, etc. St. Jerome was a learned monk from Dalmatia who died in 420 at Bethlehem. During his lifetime, he wrote numerous commentaries on the Bible to help people to interpret and better understand the Scriptures, rather than reading it with a literal interpretation of the words. A famous quote from St. Jerome is Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ. He is revered today as the patron saint of Scripture scholars. (Isn t that all of us?!) We celebrate his feast day this week on September 30. Are you a person who regularly reads your Bible? If so, you are among the 27,500,000 in the USA who profess to faithfully read it every day. If not, perhaps this Friday on Jerome s feast day would be a good time for us to pull out our Bibles, dust them off, and read a few verses in a language we can all understand, thanks to St. Jerome! You never know; it might even change our lives! You are also invited to come to our friendly Bible Study sessions each week on Mondays, 7:00-8:30 p.m., or on Tuesdays 9:15-10:45 a.m., beginning this week, Sept 26/27. We are studying the Psalms. (1 Timothy 6:11-16) Gospel Jesus tells the parable of the reversal of fortunes between the rich man and the poor man, Lazarus. (Luke 16:19-31) September 25, 2016 SCRIPTURE READINGS SEPT. 25 OCT. 2 Monday: Jb 1:6-22 Lk 9:46-50 Tuesday: Jb 3:1-3, 11-17, Lk 9:51-56 Wed.: Jb 9:1-12, Lk 9:57-62 Thursday: Dn 7:9-10, Jn 1:47-51 Friday: Jb 38:1, 12-21; 40:3-5 Lk 10:13-16 Saturday: Jb 42:1-3, 5-6, Lk 10:17-24 Sunday: Hb 1:2-3; 2:2-4 2 Tm 1:6-8, Lk 17:5-10 Abortion bulletin from Bishop Zubik: An organization that campaigns for tax-funded abortions has bought newspaper ads nationwide, claiming that a Catholic can support the choice to have an abortion in good faith. Bishop David A. Zubik has issued this response: An ad campaign claiming that it s possible for a Catholic to support public funding for abortion in good faith is wrong in every sense of that word. As Pope Francis wrote in his encyclical Amoris Laetitia, So great is the value of a human life, and so inalienable the right to life of an innocent child growing in the mother s womb, that no alleged right to one s own body can justify a decision to terminate that life... which can never be considered the property of another. This ad campaign attempts to mislead the public into believing that a Catholic can support access to abortion in good conscience. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead, the Church seeks to respect lives that others might see as disposable and asks Catholics and all people of good will to defend the absolute value of human life. The teaching of the Church on abortion is irrevocably established. It is grounded in the belief that all life, from the first moment of conception to the moment of natural death, is sacred. The most basic principle of human rights is that every human life is an irreplaceable treasure. The unborn baby is as entitled to and dependent upon our care as is an infant. As the debate about abortion continues to divide our county and even seeks to divide our faith, the Church will work tirelessly to defend and respect the lives of the unborn, the elderly, and every person in between, especially those who are most in need.
