1 Serving the members of Christ the King and St. James the Apostle parishes The Messenger Rev. Mr. John J. Carran, Deacon Administrator SAINT ANTHONY SAINT LAWRENCE SAINT JAMES THE APOSTLE June 19, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Gospel reflection Lk 9:18-24 "Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him..." The first line of today's Gospel presents a strange image. Jesus was both by himself and with others. He was somehow experiencing the solitude of personal prayer, but was also close enough to his followers to engage in conversation with them. Although we don't know exactly what the details were of this situation, it does suggest for us an example of what we might call spiritual "balance." Here we see Jesus taking time to be alone in prayer, but also taking time to engage in spiritual reflection with the other members of his community. He didn't sacrifice one for the other. He found a way to have both. We are called to do the same. Developing the habit of personal prayer is an essential part of our spiritual lives. Like Jesus, we too need to set aside time and space to pray by ourselves, connecting as individuals with our Father in heaven. Whether it be a few quiet moments in the morning, or time to pray at night, this kind of prayer keeps us connected to God. It enables us to give our own answer the poignant question Jesus poses today, "But who do you say that I am?" Personal prayer alone, however, is not enough to fulfill us spiritually. We are also meant to participate in the larger community of believers, joining together with others in communal prayer and reflection. This, of course, happens every time we attend Mass as we gather together at church and join in the liturgy. For some, "sacrificing" our Sunday mornings week after week may seem like too much to ask. But this is one way we can carry out the challenging command of Christ to take up our cross and follow him. Today s Readings 1st Reading Zechariah prophesies a time of great mourning. REFLECTION JUNE 19, 2016 From the Desk of Deacon John: I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the Dads of our parishes a happy and blessed Father s Day! We also remember in a special way all of the Dads who are no longer with us and have been called home by our Heavenly Father, we pray that they know the peace and joy of the Father s Kingdom for all eternity. Many thanks to the Pastoral Council and Staff of St. James the Apostle for the wonderful reception last Sunday following Mass in honor of my 5 th Anniversary of Ordination to the Diaconate. Many thanks to both of my parish families for all the good wishes and encouraging words. It is my humble honor and privilege to serve in both of our good parishes. I have, and continue to be, truly blessed by you through your prayers and support. Today in St. Luke s Gospel, we hear Jesus ask two questions of his disciples. First, Who do the crowds say that I am? They said in reply, John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, One of the ancient prophets has arisen. The second question however is more direct, But who do you say that I am? And we hear Peter s response, The Christ of God. So let us put ourselves in this Gospel passage as one of the Disciples being asked by Jesus, But who do you say that I am? How would we respond, what kind of an answer would we give. I believe our answer would be mainly based on our own personal relationship with Jesus. Who is Jesus for us in our daily lives? In what ways do we relate to Jesus, is it through a church building, is it through the Eucharist, or is it through one another? I would suspect each of our personal answers would widely vary from one person to the next, as each of our personal relationships with Jesus are different. Last Sunday in my homily, I referred to the On Mission for the Church Alive! we pray each week and the one line in that prayer which jumps out to me in a personal way the line is Help us to learn Jesus, to love Jesus and to live Jesus. This is a big part of what On Mission for the Church Alive! is about, bringing people ever closer to Jesus. We accomplish this not only by coming to Mass each week, but also by our interactions with people in our everyday lives. We need to bear witness to the love of Christ in our service to one another. We accomplish this through the many various ministries of our parish such as our Social Ministry, Adult Formation, Youth and Young Adults, Fundraisers, Evangelization, Health Ministry, Small Groups and our Year of Mercy Projects; just to name a few. In serving one another, we are, in essence, serving Jesus. So, when anyone asks you the question: Who do you say Jesus is for you? how will you respond? Wishing you a Spirit filled week. God Love You! Deacon John 2nd Collection, Sunday, June 26, For Peter s Pence: It provides Pope Francis with funds that benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering. Trivia Answer: B) Galatians JUNE 19, 2016 This short epistle with only 6 chapters was written to the people of Galatia where a church community had been established a few years after Jesus resurrection. The Galatians were being influenced by false teachers who were obliging all Christians, even those who had been Gentiles (non-jews), to observe circumcision and other obligations of the Mosaic Law. Paul wrote to the Galatians, who had been very committed to the 613 laws of the Torah, to tell them You're free from that. You're baptized into Jesus. You're now sons and daughters of God. Your responsibility is not simply to 613 human laws that somehow you think by measuring how well you fulfill them you can determine whether you're being saved or not. You must be clothed in Christ Jesus. When we begin to put on Jesus, we break down all the barriers. (Gal 3:28) There's no longer Jews or Greeks, slave or free, male or female, rich or poor. We have to keep on breaking down those barriers. According to scholars, it took a few decades for the church to break down the barriers between Jewish and Gentile Christians by finally eliminating the requirement that followers of Jesus had to become Jews. It took 1,800 years for the church to stop approving of slavery When it comes to male or female, we still haven't totally broken down those barriers. We have discrimination within our church. Women are kept in a secondclass position. That s wrong. If we take up our cross and follow Jesus, we will work to bring about change, to make full equality happen within our church and within our society between men and women. It won't be easy. The same thing is true of rich and poor. We haven't achieved the situation that was present in the early church, where no one among them was in need because they shared all they had. MARRIAGE Each month there is a timely and succinct article written about one aspect of our Catholic faith and packaged attractively in a two-page handout called the Catholic Update. The June issue entitled Biblical Wisdom for a Lifetime of Love was written by Manuel and Karee Santos. They discuss what you can do to strengthen or support a marriage relationship. They also remind us that two imperfect people can more likely become a good and wholesome family when they include God in their marriage. Pick up a free copy of the CU from the table in the narthex at St. James or contact Sr. Zoe for a copy. Read it and see what you think!
