This decision was precipitated mostly by my husband, Greg s retirement a few months ago, and our decision to move South to escape our New York winters. It was a decision that I thought would come easily, but when reached, nearly brought me to tears. In my 25+ years here, I have met many lovely people, and been fortunate enough to make dear friends. I have been thrilled at the occasions of the many Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations and Marriages, and saddened by the many funerals as well. I have been gratefully amazed at the generosity of spirit and love of all those who volunteer their time, talent and treasure throughout our community. In closing, I d like to say how deeply appreciative I am to those who gave me the strength and support when my journey was difficult and for being with me to share my joyful, happy times too. In May, I initiated a contest encouraging people to write me about someone or something that makes them happy about where they live. In response to my call, Gary Shaw of Rochester wrote about his visits to Holy Ghost Cemetery in Gates. His parents are buried there, and he goes to their graves and waters flowers on special days. The cemetery provides water faucets every couple hundred yards, Shaw wrote. The part of the tale that makes me smile involves the five-gallon plastic containers near each faucet. When he comes to a container, it s always filled with water. And when he s done with the container, he, like everyone else, fills it back up. It doesn t sound like there are any posted suggestions that people do it; they just do. In this case, I suspect that the water-jug ritual is a show of support, a gesture that suggests we re all in this together and gives some comfort to those who have come to pay their respects to those they have lost. Yes, it s the little things that make the difference, Shaw writes, and I agree. 6 FAITH FORMATION OPTIONS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS The Church recognizes that parents are the first and foremost teachers of the faith for their children. Catechists (teachers) are resources who work in partnership with parents in providing the information that helps parents provide the formation. Faith formation is a life-long process. It doesn t end after the celebration of a sacrament or when a teen outgrows youth group. Faith formation is a personal journey that, often, is best shared with those around us, and what better way for parents to spend time with their children than in growing together in faith? "Trước khi tạo thành ngươi trong lòng mẹ, Ta đã biết ngươi" (Gr 1, 4-10) 24 Tháng Sáu Cái Bóng Có một người khờ nọ muốn thoát khỏi cái bóng của mình... Nhưng càng trốn thì cái bóng càng đeo đuổi anh. Anh lăn lộn trên đất, anh đâm xuống nước, dù anh đi đâu, dù anh làm gì, cái bóng của anh vẫn còn đó. Có một người khôn ngoan nghe chuyện mới đến cố vấn cho anh khờ. Người khôn ngoan ấy nói như sau: "Ðể thoát khỏi cái bóng của anh, anh chỉ cần đến đứng dưới bóng của một cây lớn". Có nép mình dưới bóng cây Thập giá của Chúa Giêsu, chúng ta mới có thể thoát được cái bóng của không biết bao nhiêu phù phiếm, hư ảo trong cuộc sống của chúng ta. Hôm nay Giáo Hội mừng kính trọng thể ngày sinh của một con người đã từng nép bóng dưới cây Thập giá của Chúa Giêsu. Con người ấy chính là Gioan Tẩy Giả, vị tiền hô của Ðấng Cứu Thế, nhưng đồng thời cũng là người luôn nép bóng trong Chúa Giêsu. Thánh Gioan đã tóm tắt tất cả cuộc sống của Ngài trong câu nói: "Ngài phải lớn lên, còn tôi phải nhỏ lại". Dưới cái nhìn của con người, như Chúa Giêsu cũng đã có lần khen tặng, Gioan là con người cao cả nhất được sinh ra từ người nữ. Ngày sinh của Ngài được đánh dấu bằng những biến cố khác thường. Sự chào đời của Ngài đã mang lại niềm vui và hy vọng cho mọi người xung quanh. Vị tiên tri được xem là cao cả nhất trong lịch sử Israel ấy đã lôi kéo được một đám đông mà chưa từng có vị tiên tri nào đã quy tụ được... Thế nhưng, cuối cùng, để hoàn tất sứ mệnh của mình, con người ấy đã nhỏ lại và mất hẳn trong kiếp tù đày và một cái chết bỉ ổi. Gioan nhỏ lại trong cái chết ấy, nhưng Chúa Giêsu lớn lên trong Mầu Nhiệm của Ngài, bởi vì cái chết của Gioan là một loan báo về chính cái chết của Chúa Giêsu... Nhưng cũng chỉ trong cái chết của Chúa Giêsu, cái chết của Gioan mới có ý nghĩa... Trong bóng thập giá của Chúa Giêsu, Gioan đã tìm lại được chính mình. Chúng ta cầu xin điều gì trong ngày sinh của thánh Gioan Tẩy Giả nếu không phải là bước đi trong từng bước nhỏ lại của Ngài. Trong từng bước ấy, chúng ta hãy đặt mình dưới bóng vĩ đại của Thập giá Chúa Giêsu. Chỉ trong chiếc bóng vĩ đại ấy của Thập giá Chúa Giêsu, những nghịch cảnh, những đau thương, những nghi ngờ và ngay cả những cái chết từng ngày sẽ mang lấy ý nghĩa. Và ý nghĩa ấy là gì nếu không phải là sự lớn lên của Ðức Kitô trong chúng ta? Chúng ta có nhỏ lại trong cái nhìn hẹp hòi ích kỷ của chúng ta, chúng ta có nhỏ lại trong những ham muốn ganh tỵ bất chính của chúng ta, chúng ta có nhỏ lại trong hận thù nhỏ nhen của chúng ta, thì lúc đó Ðức Kitô mới thực sự lớn lên trong chúng ta. In fact, we still have roughly 10 orders at the engraver's for the manger, so don't worry if your's hasn't been placed yet. I just wanted to get a jump on the project now that my foot is healed. 9 SUNDAY READINGS - July 1, Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1st Reading - Wisdom 1:13-15; 2: nd Reading - 2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, Gospel - Mark 5:21-43 This week s Gospel reading records Jesus healing power graciously given to both a well-off leader, and to the humble unknown. In one instance fear and hopelessness was present and in the other fear and faith, yet both were recipients of Jesus healing power. And so we rightly wonder what is the proper understanding of this relationship between faith and healing. Perhaps the best way to approach this question is to begin with what we know: 1) Sickness and death are a normal part of the human condition, a condition accompanying our fallen nature. 2) Jesus death and resurrection restores our fallen nature so that we can become partakers of his divine nature and escape the corruption that is in the world. 3) Reversing the natural progression of sickness and death requires miraculous power which resides only within the power of God, and through His grace He has allowed mankind to discover many medical cures. 4) In all of life we are to have faith, faith in God s love and concern for our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well being, and faith in His ability and desire to help us. 5) The quantity of our faith is not as important as its quality, for Jesus said if we even have the faith of a mustard seed, a very tiny thing, we can do wonders. So it isn t how much faith we have but in whom our faith resides. 6) Our faith needs to be exercised not only in trusting God s power to heal, but also in trusting God s will for us when healing is not granted. God does allow His children to incur sickness and even death to bring about His glory and to accomplish His purposes. It takes equally as great faith to say, as Jesus did, Nevertheless, thy will be done, as it does to say, Please heal me. The things God allows in our lives are designed to bring us closer to Him, to help us discover the depths of His love for us, and to illicit the willing abandonment of ourselves to His love and mercy. And though we often fear sickness and death, the abandonment of ourselves to His love in the midst of our illness and in the face of death is what the Holy Spirit enables us to do, replace fear with faith. There is a sense in which no doctor ever heals. The doctors themselves would be the first to admit this. The magic is not in the medicine but in the patient s body What the treatment does is to stimulate Natural functions or to remove what hinders them. We speak for convenience of the doctor, or the dressing, healing a cut. But in another sense every cut heals itself: no cut can be healed in a corpse All who are cured are cured by Him, not merely in the sense that His providence provides them with medical assistance and wholesome environments, but also in the sense that their very tissues are repaired by the far-descending energy which, flowing from Him, energizes the whole system of Nature. SOUTHWESTERN CORN AND ROAST BEEF WRAPS 2 ears sweet corn, husks and silk removed 1 teaspoon olive oil 3/4 cup jalapeno-flavor cream cheese spread inches flour tortillas (burrito size) 12 ounces thinly sliced cooked roast beef 1 ripe medium avocado, sliced 1 large tomato, sliced and cut into strips 1/2 medium red onion, thinly sliced ST. HELEN SPARKLE WORKERS - TEAM 1 Preheat grill or large skillet over medium-high heat. Brush corn with olive oil. Cook corn directly on grill rack or in hot skillet for 8 to 12 minutes, turning as it browns and lowering heat as needed until corn is tender with charring in spots. Cool slightly; cut kernels from cobs. Spread 2 tablespoons cream cheese on one side of each tortilla to within 1/2 inch of edge; arrange beef slices to cover. Place the grilled corn kernels, avocado, tomato and red onion in a 3-inch strip along one edge of each tortilla. Fold in sides and roll up. Cut in half to serve.
