2 SQUARE NEWS Soul Food Sunday Come enjoy some soul food and build our multicultural bonds as we kick off Black History Month with a Multicultural Celebration. 1 pm today at Madison Place. Michael Harris Art Show Madison artist Michael Harris, who created artwork for our Scarlet Thread and Foundation Matters sermon series, has been accepted into the First United Methodist Church Art Show for his entry on the Apostles Creed. Come and support Michael and his work by visiting the gallery; open 10 am-6 pm until Feb. 17. First United Methodist Church, 227 Fulton St. SE. Family Night Out OFF Due to Ash Wednesday and the combined service with St. Francis, there will be no Family Night Out this week. Family Night Out will resume next week, Feb. 25. See your bulletin insert for more information. Communion Wednesdays for Lent The entire congregation is welcome to attend a short communion service each Wednesday during Lent. We will follow a simple liturgy of confession and prayer, followed by partaking in communion, from 12-12:30 pm Feb. 18 to Apr. 1 at the Square Campus. Elder & Deacon Nominations Do you know someone in our Madison family who would serve well as an Elder or Deacon? With a nominee s approval, submit their name(s) to the Welcome Center using a nomination form, or to Lori Robbins at x202 or lrobbins@madisonsquarechurch.org. If someone asks to nominate you, consider this vital service to the body of Christ. Being nominated does not commit you to serving; it simply means that you know of no major obstacles to serving. Nominees will be given information and time to pray over this decision. Neighborhood Prayer Team Transportation Needs Help us reach out to Madison neighbors in a simple way. Our Neighborhood Prayer Team occasionally meets people who are eager to worship with us but need help getting here each Sunday. If you can help, contact Paula Seales at paula.seales@gmail.com. The theme for this year s women's conference and retreat will be Freedom In Christ and Prayer. Praise for Eat and Explore Thanks to everyone who participated in Eat and Explore. What a wonderful response! If you were unable to attend but would still like to share your gifts of playing a musical instrument, singing, dancing, reading scripture, drama, or visual arts, contact Susie Dixon at or sdixon@madisonsquarechurch.org. Simplify: Sanctuary Design Our sermon series asks us to "purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." (2 Cor. 7:1). In that light, our sanctuary design is simple: an unadorned cross and our Mission Statement, the core essence of Madison. 3 SQUARE INSERT Ash Wednesday Joint Service Talent Show FUNdraiser Pastor Dave & Father Jose (Photo taken by Andy Ryskamp) Join us for a multi-congregational Ash Wednesday service hosted by our neighbors at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. This service marks the beginning of Lent; a day of fasting, turning away from our sins, and looking ahead to Easter. All of Madison s Wednesday evening ministries will be canceled. Sorry, there will be no nursery for this service, but St. Francis families are used to having their kids with them so some noise is expected. If you should need it, there are two large cry rooms where you can see and hear the worship service while attending to your children. Note that the service will be approximately 90 minutes. We will share refreshments after the service in the fellowship room. Please save the closest parking spaces for people with disabilities. Visit the Welcome Center for a parking map, or visit the church website for more, including video directions. 7:30 pm Wednesday, February 18 St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church 250 Brown St. SE Parking maps available at the Welcome Center This is going to be a FUNdraiser to remember, featuring food, local talent (including a former So You Think You Can Dance contestant and some of the Madison Staff members), and a silent auction. Plus, it s all for a good cause: helping our teens realize their dream of attending the College and Justice Tour. Come, be part of the entertainment! Here s how you can help: Have gifts or talents you can share? We are looking for folks to share their poetry, music, singing, art, dance, skits, monologues, miming, step, rapping, instrument solo, illusions, comedy you name it. To sign up to share your talent, contact Christy Knetsch at cknetsch@madisonsquarechurch.org or Will you give a silent auction gift? Our goal is to have a variety of items, gifts and services available for sale in a silent auction in the lobby of the church. Babysitting time, a weekend at your cottage, gently used items, and whatever you can think of, are all options. To donate, contact Terisa Bennett at youth@madisonsquarechurch.org. 12-3:30 pm Sunday, March 1 Madison Place 1401 Madison Ave. SE

4 SQUARE INSERT Steve Prince Visit February 21 & 22 Lent at Madison February 18-April 1 Madison is honored to host artist-evangelist Steve Prince. During his time with us, he will share his artwork and preach at the Square morning worship services next week, February 22. Steve is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and resides in Meadville, Pennsylvania. He is currently an artist in residence at Allegheny College. He has shown his art internationally in various solo, group and juried exhibitions, including at our own Grand Rapids Museum of Art, Calvin College, and ArtPrize. Steve is an accomplished lecturer, teacher, and preacher. It is Steve's faith that calls him to be an artist. Currently, he is working on a series of linoleum cuts entitled "Old Testament" in which he will make an image for each of the thirty-nine books of the O.T. plus five images for the book of Psalms. Most of all, Steve has a passion for social justice issues from a Biblical perspective. Steve was Image Journal s Artist of the Month in October 2013, and they wrote that "[Steve s] art becomes a traveling evangelism show for our contemporary culture, providing answers for today's troubled world.as well as a celebration of that very broken yet extremely beautiful world. The art becomes a bridge to help people find their way from that brokenness to the beauty Steve so clearly sees." To learn more about Steve and to view his work, visit Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18, and is a 40 day season leading to Easter. Lent invites us to willingly identify with Christ's suffering, confront our own sinfulness, and celebrate God's great rescue plan: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world but to save the world through him." John 3: Please join us for our various Lent events, and invite a friend to come along with you to hear the good news! You can get a Lent Devotional booklet at the Welcome Center, or a weekly devotional bookmark in the bulletin.
