1 APRIL VOLUME 197 ISSUE 8 EASTER & HOLY WEEK P. 3 & 4 Make yourself familiar with the many services and opportunities offered at First Church this season.
2 Biographies and autobiographies are my favorite books to read. I ve read books on political leaders, technology moguls, entertainment icons, and historical figures. I ve always been fascinated with the stories of other people s lives. All these books have something in common too. These individuals have reflected on their own lives and have a story to tell the world. The more I read about the lives of others, the more it causes me to reflect on my own life. It causes me to ask if the life I am living is meaningful and filled with purpose. Lent is one of my favorite seasons of the year. It seems a little strange to say that. Lent is a dark, quiet time of repentance. It is a time of sacrifice and self-denial where we deny our worldly cravings and instead focus on our spiritual needs. For me, however, Lent is also a season of selfreflection. We can learn a lot from self-reflection. When we take time to stop and reflect on our lives, we discover if the choices we are making are turning us into the persons that God has called us to be. Author Donald Miller in his book A Million Miles in a Thousand Years reflects upon his life story and the narrative his life was writing. And once you live a good story, you get a taste for a kind of meaning in life, and you can t go back to being normal; you can t go back to meaningless scenes stitched together by the forgettable thread of wasted time. As Lent comes to a close, let us reflect back on what God has taught us this Lenten season. Let us remember that though there is hurt and pain in this world, mercy and redemption can be found in the resurrected Christ that we celebrate every Sunday and especially on Easter. But let us not rush straight from Lent into Easter. We have much to learn from the story that unfolds through Holy Week. One of the worship resources we use And Also With You (Timothy J. Crouch, OSL Publications) reminds us that, Much of our experience in the Church's worship life is from Sunday to Sunday. If we gather for worship on Palm Sunday and do not return again until Easter, we encounter two consecutive Lord's Days with triumphant themes. Unless we are confronted by the story of our Lord's passion, we may well miss the point. I want you to experience the fullness of Easter! Reflecting on the powerful narrative of Holy Week, before experiencing the beauty of Easter, is so important. Easter is best viewed through the lens of Holy Week. There are a number of services and activities that you can be a part of during Holy Week as we prepare ourselves for the resurrection. (1) Monday & Tuesday The Stations of the Cross and a prayer labyrinth will be set up in Wesley Abbey. The room will be open to the community from 11:00am 1:00pm and 5:00 7:00pm. (2) Holy (Maundy) Thursday Join us in a Holy Thursday worship service in the Main Sanctuary at 7:00pm. For those interested, there will also be a Seder Meal in the Youth Building at 6:00pm (reserve by April 10.) (3) Good Friday Join us for a Good Friday Tenebrae Service at 7:00pm in the Main Sanctuary. (4) Holy Saturday Join us in a new worship experience at the Easter Vigil Service at 7:00pm. Come be a part of as many of these services and experiences as you can on Holy Week. I look forward to worshiping with you this Holy Week and Easter. Let this season be an opportunity for us to remember the sacrifice that God made and reflect upon our own lives and decisions, striving to be the disciples God has called us to be.
