2 PASTORAL LETTER Dear Friends, One of my devotional guides for Lent is The Little Black Book: Six-minute reflections on the Passion according to Mark. It s based on the writings of Bishop Ken Untener, put together by Catherine Haven, editor, with the help of Sr. Nancy Ayotte, IHM, and published by the Diocese of Saginaw, MI. My friend, Kirk Ball, shared this resource with me, and I love it! I want to share today s reflection (Wednesday - Fifth Week in Lent) with you. Seven times a day I praise you (Psalm 119:164). In his Passion narrative, St. Mark takes special notice of the time of the day. For instance, in today s text (Mark 15:24-27), he notes that it was nine o clock in the morning when Jesus was crucified. For faithful Jews at that time, morning prayer and evening prayer were held at the Temple, as well as prayer at the third, sixth and ninth hours of the day (i.e., 9 a.m., 12 noon, and 3 p.m.). The death watch has begun. Death usually came slowly to those crucified. This was by design, so they would suffer as much as possible. The Gospels tell me precious little about Jesus on the cross. I m told about the soldiers dividing up his clothes (part of the degradation was to strip the victim)... what time it was... what the inscription on the cross said... that his entourage was made up of criminals at his right and left. But I ll get no description of Jesus on the cross. It was too horrible to tell. Yet the cross is our logo. This is the cross with which I sign myself, the cross I put on my wall, wear about my neck. I ought never to take it lightly. Spend some quiet time with the Lord. The title of today s reflection is Significance of time, and the instructions for using the Little Black Book, begin like this: Six minutes a day. That s what you re asked to give from now until Easter. Each 24-hour day has 240 six minute packages. During Lent, one of those will be given to the Lord. Six minutes a day. I confess that I am finding my six minute package of quiet time with the Lord to be very significant. (Thank you, Kirk! God bless you!) In fact, I ve ordered a Little Black Book for the season of Easter (I understand that the Easter book comes in the liturgical color of white!). Do you have six minutes a day to spend some quiet time with the Lord? I look forward to seeing you in church this Palm Sunday! Your Pastor, Dr. Wesley H. Wachob Senior Pastor IN LOVE AND REMEMBRANCE The family of Donna Gache. Donna died March 6, The family of Nell Funches. 3 EVENTS APRIL FOCUS Missions Focused on Helping Senior Adults One of our responsibilities as followers of Christ is to love and care for the elderly and widows. James 1:27 reminds us that religion that is pure before God is to care for widows and orphans and 1 Timothy instructs us to treat all senior adults like they are our fathers and mothers. As a church we provide missions which serve senior adults and mission opportunities for senior adults to participate. We strive to involve older adults intergenerationally and in ways that empower and encourage them to use resources for skills, knowledge, experience, and spiritual insight. First Church has developed many ministries and missions that focus on senior adults. Our Pastoral Care Team and Good Shepherds visits and brings comfort to our homebound. The church works alongside organizations such as the Council on Aging to provide help for seniors in our community. Our medical closet furnishes equipment to senior adults in need of medical supplies. Through these various missions, and others, First Church lives into the mandate that is set by the Bible to assist our senior adults, the elderly, and widows. As part of our April Missional Focus, join us for our twelfth annual volunteer outreach day and share your hearts and hands with others in need. We will meet for breakfast and worship, then go out into our community to serve our elderly through yard work. gardening. and nursing home visitations. Lunch will not be provided, but we encourage the teams to fellowship afterwards and go to lunch together. Please complete the registration form provided online at FUMCPensacola.com or in the Church Office. If you have any additional questions, contact Katie Ramsey at or kmwramsey@gmail.com.
