1 WBC NEWSLETTER MAY 2017 WOODLAWN BAPTIST CHURCH EXISTS TO GLORIFY GOD BY LEADING PEOPLE INTO A GROWING RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST

2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR 2017 is the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. The Protestant Reformation was a time of reforming the church and ultimate pulling away from the Catholic church. In other words, we are not Woodlawn Catholic Church because of the Reformation. It all began with a monk, named Martin Luther in a small German town. He saw the church he loved adopting unbiblical practices, so he confronted these practices on Halloween of that same year known as the "95 Theses." For instance he saw the Pope who was too "holy" to be approached, so visitors to the Pope were only allowed to kiss his toes. Jesus on the other hand, got down on his knees and washed feet (John 13). Often times we get this portion of history a little off. Martin Luther did not set out to overthrow the Catholic church or the Pope, but he simply started to question the church based on the Bible. Luther's concern was to bring the church in line with the biblical description. We should have a 2017 reformation. The reason I would make this claim is because of the example we see in Revelation 2-3. In these chapters seven churches are addressed by Jesus. These are churches founded by Paul and the other Apostles, and even after just a few years they had changes to make. So we too must be willing to honestly look at ourselves and reform any areas that have ceased to reflect the biblical description. The key to the reformation was the willingness to work inside out. The reformers changed the most crucial things about the church, and they were willing to let go of anything that prohibited those changes. We must also have a laser focus on what is biblical and also a willingness to let go of anything that might prohibit such changes. Pastor Mitch

3 WBC 2017 NewTestament Psalms/Isaiah PRAYER FOCUS WBC PRAYER MINISTRY Prayer Matters For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer 1 Peter 3:12a ESV Based on the verse above, we can praise God for HE listens to His children. That encouraging Word gives us confidence as we pray knowing our God is listening! Believing that, we share with Him our heart s needs and hurts, and our thanks and praise when we see HIS hand at work around us. This is one way we give Him a part of us, and how HE shows us truths. Those nuggets of insight are building our faith and we come to know Him better through those reflections. Now, enjoy that relationship even more deeply as we specifically pray by name for neighbors through the Pray4EveryHome tool. If you have not signed up, please consider doing so by going to the church website and clicking on the signup note on the Pray4EveryHome banner or use the prayer ministry page on the website to sign up. If you do not have web access, leave your name and need with the church office and we will get you a neighbor list. Please do not miss out! God may use your prayers to help another find a new or renewed relationship with Christ Jesus. Now that is exciting! Please continue your Bible reading journey using either the plan on the back of this handout or a different one you have selected, The scripture you read will also help guide your thoughts into ways to pray for neighbors received through Pray4EveryHome. Thank you for prayers offered on behalf of our church, community, and nation during One Voice One Focus. May you be encouraged and strengthened by your service for others. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare, you will find your welfare. 5 Children s Ministry News VBS IS COMING! June 19-23, 2017 If you would like to be a part of this amazing ministry and have not yet been contacted, please contact Carolyn Patton or Crystal Watkins or Diana Ramsey as soon as possible! We welcome the wonderful Month of May with anticipation of warm temperatures, beautiful sunshine, the magnificent colors of Spring, the winding down of school for our Elementary, Middle and High School Students, those dreaded EOG and EOC tests, and the welcoming home of our college students. We have been blessed by our Heavenly Father with such an amazingly beautiful world to live in! He has blessed us beyond measure with intelligence, creativity, and emotions that allow us to enjoy our earthly time on this planet! So, why should we be discouraged, angry, frowning, and given to hateful words when we have so much to be thankful for? It must be that sin in our lives overtakes us in our weakness. Thank God for His mercy, grace, and forgiveness through the cleansing, precious blood of Jesus, our Savior! What a mighty God we serve! As we say So long! to the cold weather of winter and Welcome! to the warm to hot temperatures ahead, may we all be renewed in our commitment to Christ and His church as we participate in the coming events at Woodlawn! I pray that as we continue to pray for our neighbors, we will see God s hand at work in a tremendous way! People really do need the Lord, and He has given us a command to reach out to those who are lost and discouraged and to those who need a church home. Let s come alive this Spring and Summer and give God the glory for what He is going to do at Woodlawn! Jesus is our Hope! Let all of us rejoice! Let all of us be thankful! VBS Workers Lunch and Kickoff Sunday, May 7, 2017 Immediately following Worship! Lunch in Woodlawn s FLC for all VBS Workers and their families! This will be our kickoff and we hope to go forward from there with much ambition and enthusiasm! Any questions, please contact Carolyn Patton or Crystal Watkins.
