1 WBC NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2018 WOODLAWN BAPTIST CHURCH EXISTS TO GLORIFY GOD BY LEADING PEOPLE INTO A GROWING RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST
2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Can I give you some insider information about Woodlawn Baptist Church? We want to institute a new way of doing church. The new way is this, we hope to institute or emphasize three biblical ideas as a church family. The ideas are: missions, leadership, and discipleship. Why these three areas? As we honestly look at ourselves and then compare what we see to the image of the church described in God's Word, these three areas stand out as great opportunities for growth. First, we must share the message of the gospel with those who do not have a relationship with Jesus. Think if you had a moment in which God came down from the sky and said, "there is something I want you to do." What a moment of clarity and purpose to have such a specific calling upon your life. Wouldn't you begin to center everything you do around that single message? If you are a church member you have had that moment. Jesus came back from the dead and said, I have all authority on heaven and earth. So, there is something I want all of you to do...lead people to become Jesus followers everywhere possible (Matt 28:18-20). So we must attempt to fulfill this calling to the best of our collective abilities. Second, we must appoint leaders who direct our church to follow Christ. The Bible says that the head of the church is Christ (Eph. 1:22-23). The Bible also says that each local church should have a group of leaders, some volunteer and some paid (1 Tim. 5:17-18), to make sure the church consistently follows the leadership of Christ (1 Pet. 5:1-4). And this group of leaders is never a single individual but always a group (Acts 14:23; Tit. 1:5). We must adopt this type of leadership. Lastly, we must disciple each other as part of a church family. The Bible says that you should never try to live the Christian life apart from other believers (Heb. 10:24-25). Actually, your growth as an individual Christian will be unfulfilled and stunted unless you are interacting with other believers (Heb. 3:12-13; Gal. 6:2; Jam. 5:16). So, we must develop opportunities for each church member to be connected to other believers in a way that allows them to grow closer to Jesus. Each of these areas is nonnegotiable in the Bible, or to say it more boldly, you cannot be called a church according the Bible without these three areas. So, we must comply with God's Word. Pastor Mitch
3 WBC 2018 NewTestament Psalms / Isaiah reading plan PRAYER FOCUS WBC PRAYER MINISTRY Prayer Matters Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge HIM and HE will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 The scripture above provides great help as we seek to make wise, God-honoring decisions. Many Christians learn that verse early. However, applying it always takes longer! We come to know the value of this principle as we experience the hope and peace this practice can make in our lives. Prayer is one of the ways we can acknowledge Him. Spending time talking with God, simply telling Him how we feel about His love and care for us and thanking Him for provisions is a great way to begin. As we then tell God about the needs others or we are facing and ask for help, we have acknowledged HIS power and wisdom, and our need of His help. You are talking to the One who has the power to make the difference and the wisdom to know methods and timing, which may look different from your own understanding. Therefore, we pray and trust in the Lord and watch for direction. This is not always easy but with His help, possible. Then, we thank Him; believing as it is written: Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (Phil.4:6-7) He has given us His Word for direction and peace. Also, ask God to let you recognize answers to your prayers so you can give Him praise! Please continue seeking to talk with God daily and to read His Word. Those continue to be disciplines that will guide us to being in God s presence where we will find what we need!... in HIM all things hold together. Colossians 1:17b NIV.
