1 WBC NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2017 WOODLAWN BAPTIST CHURCH EXISTS TO GLORIFY GOD BY LEADING PEOPLE INTO A GROWING RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST

2 A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Are you getting too much milk? All Christians should become lactose intolerant! Here is what I mean, the writer of Hebrews says, "You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child" (Heb. 5:12-13). The writer of Hebrews is clearly instructing us to move beyond a diet of simple truths. It is not good to continually be spiritually spoon fed. This passage has often been interpreted to mean we need deeper teaching from the Bible. If our only take away is that we need deeper teaching we have missed the point of these verses. The reason I say the point has been missed is because the writer of Hebrews is not wanting his audience to become professional eaters, he is wanting people who can teach others the truths of the Bible. "For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again... You need milk, not solid food" (Heb. 5:12). Let's follow the analogy. Babies drink milk, but as we mature we are able to eat more solid food, and then eventually we become parents and help the next generation eat. So we start out with someone feeding us the gospel. Then over time we get to a place where we can handle a truth that is less straight forward, a truth that requires discernment (Heb. 5:14). But we don't stop there. The goal is not for us to become professional Bible interpreters, constantly taking in deeper truths, but to begin to feed others. Those who only want to take in Bible truths and never teach them to others, actually become "dull of hearing" (Heb. 5:11). They start saying things like, "I just need to go somewhere else so I can be fed." The writer of Hebrews is telling us that as we mature we should stop asking, "am I being feed?" and start asking, "who am I feeding?" Pastor Mitch

3 WBC 2017 NewTestament Psalms and Proverbs Plan PRAYER FOCUS WBC PRAYER MINISTRY Prayer Matters Therefore tell the people: This is what the Lord Almighty says: Return to Me, declares the Lord Almighty, and I will return to you, says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 1:3 There are two prayer emphases for October. One is a call to prayer issued by Pastor Mitch for WBC s Music Minister Search Team and Candidates. It will continue throughout the search process. Prayer guides are available in the foyer to unite our thoughts during this prayer emphasis. What an exciting privilege we have before us to participate in God s work at WBC as the team and candidates seek to find God s plan for each! The second emphasis is for October It brings an opportunity for the Church to refocus hearts on the Lord through devotion and prayer with a tool available through the NC Baptist Office of Prayer. The prayer focus is based on the verse above, Zechariah 1:3. Text the word PRAY30DAYS to to receive a brief daily prayer prompt October 1 October 30. There are accompanying prayer guides available at as well as coordinating videos that are also accessible through this site. As the American evangelical church continues to plateau or decline, we, HIS people, must do all we can to seek HIM for revival and spiritual awakening for ourselves, our families, our church and yes, our state and nation. Will you be part of this effort to unite others across NC in daily prayer for revival? Invite others to participate. Text today or visit the website for further information. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare, you will find your welfare. 5 As we begin the fall season, the children and parents are getting back into the school year routine. It can become a very busy and hectic time of year between school, homework, soccer practice, dance classes, etc. In all the craziness of being pulled in so many directions at once, don t forget the importance of letting your little ones spend time learning about God. Here at Woodlawn, we have Sunday School, Children s Choir (Sunday evenings), KidsROC and Mission Friends (Wednesday nights). We are excited to announce that Woodlawn has added Children s Church! This is for K-3 rd Grade during the Sunday morning service immediately following the offering. Please join us in the Children s Department on the second floor of the education building, and bring your friends! The children will have a snack, Bible lesson, and craft time. Meanwhile in the preschool department, we continue to have Extended Session during the Sunday morning service, where our 3-5 year olds have a short lesson, snack, songs, and playtime. Don t forget we provide a nursery for birth-2 year olds as well. If you are interested in serving through volunteering for Children s Church or Preschool Extended Session & Nursery, please see Leigh Ann Evans or Melissa Botts. Thank you.
