Saint Brigid Day marks beginning of a new year as one ethnic group embraces the new year. That date marks St. Brigid Day, the New Year holiday observed by the Irish. St. Brigid, also known as Mary of the Gael, lived in a town of Kildare, near Dublin, between the 5th and 6th centuries. St. Brigid s name means fiery arrow and she is the patron saint of cattle and dairy work. She founded the Abbey of Kildare. It is said she traveled the countryside blessing households with her white, red-eared cow. It is said she was so beautiful she attracted all the men in the town of Kildare; however, she was only interested in doing God s work. The Irish made Saint Brigid Crosses which were hung in the roofs or above the doors. A silk ribbon was left out for the saint to bless and used to cure illnesses. Through Saint Brigid of Kildare, many miracles met the spiritual and physical needs of many. We can be sure that she was a remarkable person. Making a pledge enables you to increase your generosity with payments spread out over a longer period of time. Pledges can be paid in ten monthly installments. A pledge is not something that you would be legally bound to pay if for some reason you couldn t. You can pledge in cash, checks, gifts of stock, EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) or credit cards. 4 Page Four St. Brigid Church, Meadville, Pennsylvania February 2,, Presentation of the Lord TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By Candlemas, forty days after Christmas, February 2, the season of Christ s coming has depleted our candle supply. Soon, the parish will order a new paschal candle from a catalogue or candlemaker, or in some communities, wax will be collected to be melted and molded. Last year s paschal candle shows the wear and tear of summer heat, or many funerals or baptisms. Paschal candles have been around since at least the fourth century, when Constantine s biographer Eusebius reported that the night of the sacred vigil was transformed into the brilliancy of day, by lighting throughout the city pillars of wax, while burning lamps in every place so that the splendor of this night was brighter than the brightest daylight. Light was a precious commodity in the ancient world, and this lavish use of precious beeswax was a sign of the Christian s call to bear Christ s light into the world s darkness. In a pre electric age, a whole city aglow from the paschal flame must have been a glorious sight, and a reminder to every baptized Christian of our vocation to be the light of the world. Rev. 6 ATTENTION M.A.C.Y.M FAMILIES 2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 2, 2014 $ $ $ SOUPER BOWL OF CARING THIS WEEK Today, February 1/2, our M.A.C.Y.M. students are holding the Souper Bowl of Caring after all Masses. All proceeds will go to the Meadville Soup Kitchen. Students are hoping to exceed last year s total of $1,510. This is a great way to perform a Corporal Work of Mercy: Feed the hungry. The Meadville Soup Kitchen looks forward to your donation. Please be as generous as your means allow. PARENTS PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR SON/DAUGHTER WORKS THE MASS THEY SIGNED UP FOR. This summer hundreds of high school students will join together at the University of Notre Dame to ask important questions about life, faith, their own gifts and the ways we are called to be the change we want to see in the world.
