Those attending are to bring a generous food item to share. Holy Land Hand-Carved Gifts After all Masses Aug. 9/10, there will be a display of hand carved items such as nativity scenes, crucifixes, rosaries, the Last Supper and many other beautiful religious articles located in the gathering area. Thank you for supporting this project to keep the Christians present in the holy land of Jesus birth. 4 Page Four St. Brigid Church, Meadville, Pennsylvania August 3, th Sunday of the Year Reflecting on God s Word Two years ago Michon and her children had gotten their own apartment and left the safety of the women s shelter behind. Three weeks ago she brought the children back for the first time since they had left. They came for the feast celebrating the grand opening of the shelter s new addition. The feast had felt just like old times, only better, with plenty of speeches, laughter, tears, and hugs, and more than enough food to go around. Michon was glad to be able to bring a big chicken salad to share. There had been plenty of meals when she had had nothing to contribute. At the feast everyone commented on how happy Michon s children looked and how much they d grown. Since then she had already returned to the shelter four times as a volunteer. A feast could be defined as a large gathering of people to share food and memories in celebration of a significant event or vision. Feasts have an amazing power to heal and nourish our spirits, to bind us together in love, and motivate us to care for one another. The feasts in today s scriptures illustrate the miraculous physical and spiritual nourishment that takes place when we gather for the Eucharist, to celebrate the memory and promise of the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:39). Sunday Celebrations without a Priest Officially called Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest, this document of the Church prescribes what can be done in parishes where a priest is not available for weekly Mass. It can be led by any trained lay person, and is basically a Liturgy of the Word service. It follows the Liturgy of the Word set for that day, but omits most parts of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, although the Our Father is usually said. If there is a tabernacle with reserved hosts, a communion service can be part of the rite. Although this rite lacks the full expression of what makes us Church, it does provide an authorized worship service to those for whom Mass is not an option. This rite may also be used in the place of daily Mass when no priest is available.
