Candles that were blessed the day before are fashioned in an X shape and used to bless the throats of those who wish it. Her feast is celebrated February 1st and we have the privilege of observing it as a First Class Feast today! Visit her icon in church and then join us today for refreshments in our social hall. Brigid lived in Ireland from 450 to 525 A.D., born soon after Ireland had been blessed with the light of faith. She received her religious veil from St. Mel, nephew and disciple of St. Patrick. Brigid built a cell under a large oak, thence called Killdara (cell of the oak.) She was joined by several other women who formed themselves into a religious community. It branched out into several other convents throughout Ireland, all of which revered her as their founder. Brigid was especially known for her charity. She made crosses from straw. The straw cross is the basis of our parish logo. Healing St. Brigid Father David Poulson will celebrate a healing Mass at our Church on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 6:00 pm. God wants to heal us through the powerful sacrament of the Eucharist, this Mass will focus on praying for physical, spiritual or emotional healing both personally and in our families. All members of the Community are invited to attend so please mark your calendar and join us. Mass with Bishop St. Brigid Bishop of Erie, Lawrence Persico, will celebrate Mass at our Church on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 9:00 am. in honor of our 150th Anniversary. A reception will follow in our social hall. Everyone is invited to attend so please mark your calendar and join us. 4 Page Four St. Brigid Church, Meadville, Pennsylvania February 3, th Sunday of the Year Reflecting on God s Word Prophets tend not to be very popular. They get thrown in jail, ridiculed, beaten up, or killed. The leaders of Jerusalem once had Jeremiah thrown in a cistern, where he would have died if someone had not interceded for him with the king. Today we hear how the people of Nazareth would have killed Jesus if he had not given them the slip. In both cases, people did not want a message that God was sending them through the prophets. Jeremiah had to tell the leaders that their time had run out because of their infidelity to the covenant. God was leaving them to their own devices, allowing Jerusalem to be destroyed by the Babylonians. Jesus confronts his own townspeople by admonishing them that they should be like that woman whom Elijah helped and that leper Elisha sent to wash in the Jordan. Both of these Gentiles had faith they should imitate. But the villagers only wanted a God who would wreak vengeance on the Gentiles, a God who only worked wonders for them and who was confined within the boundaries of Israel. Sometimes we may want to keep God in a little box of our own making, limiting God to the boundaries of the church building or maybe even just the tabernacle. That way we go and visit God when we have time or need something, but we hope that God will not bother us too much with any burdensome demands. The God of Israel was never satisfied with confinement, even in something the size of the temple. And Jesus would not allow himself to be constricted in his own day concerning whom he associated or ate with or even touched. Dinners: $8 Fish/Children $4 Macaroni & Cheese or Grilled Cheese/$1 Ice Cream Bar (dish/cone). Come and enjoy a delicious Lenten dinner. We will need volunteers for clean up at 6:30 PM each Friday. Come and help out! CATHOLICISM FAITH FORMATION PROGRAM Journey around the world and Deep into the Faith With creator and host Father Robert Barron, you will learn what Catholics believe and why while being immersed in the art, architecture, literature, beliefs and practices of the Catholic tradition. This video series will be presented Weekly thru March 20 St. Brigid Chapel on Wednesdays 7:00-8:30 PM. Each video session is approximately 60 minutes, followed by a minutes discussion and sharing. This terrific year of faith opportunity is free of charge. Wednesdays thru March 20th Hope you can join us. RELIGIOUS ED Pre-Grade 6 Bishop s Visit Students from Religious Education, Seton Catholic Elementary and MACYM who wish to participate in a presentation at Mass on Feb. 17 th are invited to practice on Feb. 3 rd and Feb. 10 th in our Chapel from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. First Reconciliation Families A tri-parish parent meeting is being held at St. Mary s Center on Monday, February 4 th from 6:30-7:30 p.m. At least one parent is required to attend. Important information will be covered. Lord, increase our faith. Luke 17:1-10 The Ten Commandments help us live a holy life. The Fifth Commandment is: You shall not kill. (Take care of all life!) MACYM Grade 7 thru Confirmation SOUPER BOWL OF CARING TODAY Our M.A.C.Y.M. students will conduct their annual Souper Bowl of Caring. All proceeds will go to the Meadville Area Soup Kitchen. Hopes are to surpass last year s total. This is an opportunity to perform a Corporal Work of Mercy Feed The Hungry. No regular MACYM sessions today. REGULAR SESSIONS NEXT WEEK Regular sessions for all M.A.C.Y.M. students. PARENT BAPTISM PROGRAM will be held March 4th at St. Mary Center, 1085 Water Street. YOU are welcome to attend prior to the birth of your child, if you desire. It is one session from 6:30-8:30 PM. Parents preparing for the Baptism of their child must attend one session. Godparents are also welcome to attend. For reservations, call A certificate of attendance will be given to you so that you may present it to the priest baptizing your child. SETON CATHOLIC SCHOOL Retreat for Grades This retreat is a special time to learn more about your faith and explore God s love. All students may bring 1 friend. It will be held Sat., February 9 AM at St. Mary Center. Parents are asked to escort students into the center and sign them in. RSVP to St. Mary Church by Feb. 10th.
