Crawford County RSVP is collecting NEW socks (any size/color/style) (beginning next weekend and throughout the month of October) as a Make A Difference Day project. The socks will be distributed to those in need thru human service agencies & shelters in Crawford County. Socks usually are something people wear until they are worn out. With the cold weather approaching, area children & homeless adults are in need of new socks. Please help make this project a success by dropping off NEW socks in the Sock It To Us collection box in the gathering area. K of C meets Monday, Nov. 8 PM at St. Mary K of C Memorial Mass for deceased members will be held on Nov. 3rd at St. Brigid Church at the 9:00 AM Mass, with breakfast to follow at Perkins. 3 October 27, 2013 St. Brigid Church, Meadville, PA Page Three St. Jude Parish, Erie plans grand prize giveaway; and a spaghetti dinner provided by Serafini s on Sunday, Oct. 27, at Our Lady s Christian School, 606 Lowell Ave., Erie from noon-5:30 p.m. A grand prize giveaway of a 2013 Corvette (60th anniversary edition) or $40,000 in cash will also take place. Take-out begins at 11:30 a.m. Dinner is $7 for adults, $4 for children, and free to kids under age 5. Tickets are available at the door. Please write your deceased loved one s name in the book which is located by our Saint Brigid Icon in front of church. All of your get-well wishes, thoughts & prayers are appreciated while I am recuperating from recent surgery. Thanking God and all of you. THANKSGIVING BASKETS Help provide Thanksgiving Dinner for our needy parishioners. Bring your food donations to Mass by Sunday Nov. 24th bring items that are nonperishable such as sweet potatoes/yams, boxed or canned potatoes, canned vegetables, rice, noodles, tuna, Bisquick, boxed stuffing, applesauce, fruits, & gravy. Parishioners who would like a basket should call the office now at Pickup 10 am Mon., Nov. 25. Turkeys and other perishable items will be purchased by us; however, if you do plan to donate a turkey call us in advance to let us know. Remember that the Thanksgiving Day collection helps buy turkeys and helps replenish the Pastors Fund for the needy. Brothers And Sisters In Christ s Service at our church is sponsoring an All Souls Day program with Mass in church Saturday, Nov. 2nd at 11:30 AM, followed by a Memorial Service recognizing all parishioners who have passed away in the past 12 months, concluding with a luncheon in our social hall. Families of our deceased parishioners, along with all friends are invited to join us for lunch. Please call the parish NOW if you plan to attend. If you need transportation, tell us when you call( ). PARENT BAPTISM PROGRAM Session will be held next Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:30 PM. Parents preparing for the baptism of their child must attend. Godparents are welcome and encouraged to participate. Expectant parents may wish to come prior to the birth of their child. 4 Page Four St. Brigid Church, Meadville, Pennsylvania October 27, th Sunday of the Year TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Friday s Solemnity of All Saints and Saturday s Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed fit well at the beginning of November. The liturgical readings of this final month in the Church year are keyed to the end of time and the fulfillment of Jesus saving acts. Nowhere is this more fully celebrated than in Mexico, where November 2 is the Day of the Dead. Missionaries moved an ancient Aztec festival from midsummer to November, linking the festival to Christian themes. Today, it is a time for remembering the dead and celebrating the continuity of life, principally by festive picnics in cemeteries. There are special foods and games, and people socialize with other families and tell favorite stories about their dear ones. The sweetness of life is honored by sugary desserts and treats. Flowers, music, lights, and feasting assure that the day is not at all morbid. Traditionally, the day begins with Mass, a procession to the cemetery, and a morning feast. Most families have a special dinner with the pan de muerto, or bread of the dead. A toy skeleton is baked into the loaf, and the one who bites into it is considered lucky indeed.
