1 HILLSBOROUGH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 102 West Tryon Street Post Office Box 717 Hillsborough, NC (919) (Office) (919) Dr. Robert Brizendine, Pastor Dear Friends, The Church Mouse June, 2017 June has been a special month for me for a number of reasons. I was born on June 5. I graduated from high school in June. I was ordained as a Minister on June 6, 1976, and now I will be honorably retired on June 30. In 41 years I have probably preached close to 2,000 sermons, officiated at around 200 weddings, and participated in 300 funerals. It has been an honor and a privilege to be part of people's lives at the most sacred moments. A lot of people have asked me recently, Are you counting the days? The answer is no. I enjoy what I do, so I am not rejoicing that I only have four more sermons to preach at HPC. I also choose not to view this approaching retirement with sadness. Instead of thinking, I have only four more sermons here, I approach this month with gratitude, rejoicing that I get to add four more sermons to the approximately 666 sermons I have already preached here. This month will be full of meaningful events. On June 4, two days before the 41 st anniversary of my Ordination, and one day before my 66 th birthday, we will celebrate Pentecost Sunday. We will celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper together as a community of faith. In recent months I have had the privilege of leading a Confirmation Class with Celeste Clay, and she will renew her baptismal vows on that Sunday. It is always a joy to see young people confirm and own the faith that we give them early in life. When a young child is baptized, we all vow that we will take responsibility for that child and help nurture them in the faith. On June 5, I get to continue a tradition started a few years ago, and teach the final lesson for the year when Circle #1 meets. On June 25, my final Sunday, we get to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism for Skyler Francis Eisen. The Triangle Tuba Quartet will enhance our music that day, and I am confident that Scott and our HPC Choir will do their usual great job! Following the worship service, we will have a lunch together in our newly renovated and expanded Studwick Hall and kitchen. As I conclude 14 and a half years as your Pastor, I want to say once again, Thank you. I want to assure you that Mae Lee and I will be OK. I want to also assure you that you will be OK. Part of my joy in serving on the Exams and Transfers Commission for New Hope Presbytery is seeing all the gifted and wonderful women and men who are seeking ordination to ministry or transferring into New Hope Presbytery, seeking places to serve. God continues to call people to serve through the church. Our deliberate process as Presbyterians may seem slow at times, but it serves us well in the long run. Be patient with the process, and pray for both your Interim Pastor Search Committee, and later on, your Pastor Search Committee. In the meantime, remember that you are the church. God has gifted each of us with unique gifts and we are called to share those to build up the Body of Christ and serve our community. Especially during this period of transition, your gifts and involvement are vitally important. We have seven Commissions that organize the work of our church. Find a place that your gifts can contribute, and get involved! You will always be in my heart and in our prayers. - Bob and Mae Lee

You are encouraged to wear red! We will celebrate Communion as well as the Confirmation of Celeste Clay. Remember the Pentecost Offering!
3 FELLOWSHIP / COMMISSION NEWS HPC BOOK CLUB Join us at 7 PM for our two June meetings! June 4 th we will meet to discuss When Sleeping Women Awake, Mountains Will Move by Barbara Mosley De Souza Rev. de Souza shares the stories of women she taught and worked with during her 40 years of service in Brazil, 14 as a social worker for the local Catholic church, 8 with the American Friends Service Committee (Quakers), and 18 with Global Ministries. She provided health education to empower women in the favelas (shantytowns) of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. With her students, she designed and published the curriculum for a Community Health Educators Training Course and proved that knowledge builds self-esteem, thus empowering her students to become multipliers, encouraging more women to change their own lives and the lives of others. June 25 th we will discuss Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly This New York Times Bestseller was inspired by the life of a real World War II heroine. - New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Caroline s world is forever changed when Hitler s army invades Poland in September 1939 and then sets its sights on France. - An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move can have dire consequences. - For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a maledominated realm of Nazi secrets and power. The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continents from New York to Paris, Germany, and Poland as Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten. Book Club meets at 7:00 on a Sunday evening most months at the church. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served. LEMONADE ON THE LAWN From April 2 through September, congregation members offer light refreshment after the 11:00am service each Sunday. The 2017 Lemonade on the Lawn signup sheet is located on the bulletin board in Room #204. Please sign up to celebrate your own special day, or just for the joy of sharing with others! A Brush With kindness (ABWK) Projects Our Church has committed to doing 2 ABWK projects this year. The first will be the weekends of June 17/18 and June 24/25 involving exterior cleaning and minor repair and constructing small front porches and steps on two mobile homes in the Fairview community. At this time we are looking for looking for three teams for the June projects. One team will pressure wash two homes and repair the underpinning. We believe this will take one day. Team two will build a porch on the first home on June 17 th and 18 th. Team three will build a porch on a second home on June 24 th and 25 th. Mission has been asked to do more local projects this year and this is a great opportunity to work locally to assist our neighbors. There will be a ABWK sign-up sheet sent to HPC members. Please consider working on these local projects. Questions? See Joe Crane or Hervey McIver.
