1 HILLSBOROUGH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 102 West Tryon Street Post Office Box 717 Hillsborough, NC (919) (Office) (919) Dr. Robert Brizendine, Pastor The Church Mouse August, 2014 Dear friends, We are pleased to welcome Scott Schlesinger as our permanent Organist and Choir Master. He had been serving in a provisional capacity since Easter. Scott is an Associate Professor of Music at Wake Tech Community College in Raleigh. He has degrees from North Carolina Central University and Indiana University, and a doctorate degree from the University of California at Los Angeles. He has experience working in churches, most recently at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Durham. He is an accomplished musician and we welcome his excitement and imagination in introducing a variety of music in our services. Scott's is scottschles@hotmail.com. We had a very successful Mission Trip to Sunset Gap, TN June 29-July 5, and members of the team reported at both services on July 6. Seven members of HPC accepted an invitation from the Islamic and Turkish Institute in Cary to tour their center and mosque, learn about their faith, and share a meal with their community breaking the fast during Ramadan. We received a very gracious welcome, learned about their faith, observed their time of prayer, and then enjoyed a meal with members of the community and had a good time of sharing. Since my return from General Assembly, I have given reports and engaged in discussion with members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Durham, and at the Presbytery of New Hope meeting in Smithfield. After my week in Detroit for General Assembly, and a week in Tennessee on the Mission Trip, I had a week of rest and reading at Myrtle Beach. I got to read some of the books I purchased while in Detroit. One was written by Matthew Vines, a young gay man I met, who is the founder of the Reformation Project, a Bible-based non-profit organization that seeks to reform church teaching on sexual orientation and gender identity. The book is entitled God and the Gay Christian: The Biblical Case in Support of Same Sex Relationships. Lillian Daniel, a UCC minister serving a church in the Chicago area, spoke at a breakfast meeting at GA that I attended. She wrote a book entitled, When Spiritual But Not Religious is Not Enough: Seeing God in Surprising Places, Even the Church. The book is full of wit and wisdom. J. Philip Wogaman wrote a book entitled What Christians Can Learn from Other Religions. This was very appropriate, following our visit to the Turkish Center in Cary. Thomas Long, Presbyterian minister and professor of homiletics, along with Thomas Lynch, whose family has operated funeral homes for years, together wrote a book entitled The Good Funeral: Death, Grief, and the Community of Care. They address changes that have occurred in our funeral practices, not all of which have been for the best, in their opinion. I would be happy to share copies of these books with anyone who would like to read them. Education is a life-long journey, as I continue to learn and grow. I are grateful to be part of a Reformed congregation: reformed and constantly being re-formed by the word of God! We may not always agree on every issue, but let us be committed to remain at the table. - Bob

3 FELLOWSHIP / COMMISSION NEWS HPC BOOK CLUB Please plan to join us for these Fall meetings of HPC s Book Club! We generally meet eight times a year (monthly, minus the Summer months and December,) on a Sunday evening at 7:00 in the church library. The works we are reading this year are all by North Carolina authors, and we hope to be able to host each of the following this Fall! Our Summer selection was recommended by Carolyn Norris, for discussion at our September meeting (exact date TBD): Girl Meets God: On the Path to a Spiritual Life by Lauren Winner, now on staff at Duke Divinity School. The child of a Jewish father and a lapsed Southern Baptist mother, Lauren F. Winner chose to become an Orthodox Jew. But even as she was observing Sabbath rituals and studying Jewish law, Lauren was increasingly drawn to Christianity. Courageously leaving what she loved, she eventually converted. In Girl Meets God, this appealing woman takes us through a year in her Christian life as she attempts to reconcile both sides of her religious identity. (amazon.com) In October we will plan to discuss The In- Between Hour by Barbara Claypole White. This lovely story of broken people and mending relationships was recommended by Robin Bedingfield and is set here in Orange County. Bestselling author Will Shepard is caught in the twilight of grief, after his young son dies in a car accident. But when his father's aging mind erases the memory, Will rewrites the truth. The story he spins brings unexpected relief until he's forced to return to rural North Carolina, trapping himself in a lie. (amazon.com) And then on November 16 th we ll be hosting Lee Smith to talk about her latest work, Guests on Earth. It s 1936 when orphaned thirteen-year-old Evalina Toussaint is admitted to Highland Hospital, a mental institution in Asheville, North Carolina, known for its innovative treatments for nervous disorders and addictions. Taken under the wing of the hospital s most notable patient, Zelda Fitzgerald, Evalina witnesses cascading events that lead up to the tragic fire of 1948 that killed nine women in a locked ward, Zelda among them. Author Lee Smith has created, through a seamless blending of fiction and fact, a mesmerizing novel about a world apart -- in which art and madness are luminously intertwined. (amazon.com) Visitors are always welcomed! (and you don t even need to have read the book!!) P.S. Be thinking about what we might want to choose for our Christmas reading sometimes they re fun, and sometimes they re serious, but we always enjoy our Christmas-themed selections! BABY SHOWER You re invited to a Baby Shower for Renee Williams King and James King. (Renee is the daughter of Roxanne Truax, who sang in our choir with the voice of an Angel). Renee, Terri and their brother Michael grew up in this church. A BABY SHOWER for Renee and James is planned for August 10 th at Hillsborough Presbyterian Church in Strudwick Hall from 2 to 4 PM. Renee and James are registered at Pottery Barn and Baby s R US. There colors are gray, white and baby blue, with an elephant theme. Renee and James expect Eli in September. Any questions or offers to help with the shower please see Brenda Morgan. HABITAT FOR HUMANITY PAINT BLITZ Habitat for Humanity is conducting its 2 nd annual Paint Blitz providing exterior painting and simple repairs to homes in the Fairview Community. 6 NEWS FROM NEW HOPE CAMP & CONFERENCE CENTER On the day I sit down to write this we find ourselves half way through the summer season. That is hard to believe. Things have gone swimmingly well this summer. The staff has worked like a well-oiled machine. The number of child who has come to us through the weeks has been great. Smiles and laughter have abounded. Science and nature have found many creatures to explore. Arts and crafts has kept many hands busy. The newest field game here at camp has entertained for hours on end and the pool has been wet and cool. All that remains to be said is that it is shaping up to be a great summer at New Hope. Come join us if you get a chance. The tee shirt says Come See the Fun, Be the Fun. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed. Our new after school program starts today. We will put our new bus, new to us, to work. Watch us grow the program! By the way the camp is in the need of a pickup truck with a few miles left on it. If you are getting ready to trade one in, or if you have an extra one taking up space in your drive way, please consider a donation. We will make it a good home. - Richard Stevens LEMONADE ON THE LAWN -- Summer is here! Please sign up to take a turn for hosting Lemonade on the Lawn after the 11:00 church service. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board opposite the office. We only have a few Sundays left: August 17 and September 28! Questions? See Jan McKelvey. *************************************************************************************************** Hillsborough Presbyterian Church 102 West Tryon Street Post Office Box 717 Hillsborough, NC (919) HPChurch@hillsboroughpres.org Web page: SUNDAY WORSHIP SCHEDULE Contemplative Worship 8:30 AM Summer Sunday School 9:45 AM (for adults) Traditional Worship 11:00 AM Lemonade on the Lawn 12:15 PM
