4 SCRIPTURE... Isaiah 43: 1-2, Susan MacKenzie New Standard Revised Version 1 But now thus says the one, the one who created you, O Jacob, the one who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 5 Do not fear, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you; 6 I will say to the north, Give them up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from far away and my daughters from the end of the earth 7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. 8 Bring forth the people who are blind, yet have eyes, who are deaf, yet have ears! 9 Let all the nations gather together, and let the peoples assemble. Who among them declared this, and foretold to us the former things? Let them bring their witnesses to justify them, and let them hear and say, It is true. 10 You are my witnesses, says the one, and my servant whom I have chosen, so that you may know and believe me and understand that I am all. 4

6 LIFE OF OUR COMMUNITY Rev. Sarah TevisTownes CLOSING REFLECTION... Come, Thu Fount of Every Blessing... Dorenda Morse, piano Tune: NETTLETON, arr. Mary McDonald Extinguishing the Christ and Agape candles symbolizes our taking the light of Jesus Christ out into the world, where as believers, we are to serve.. BENEDICTION Rev. Sarah TevisTownes POSTLUDE... Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee... Kate Sauer, organ -melody from the 9th Symphony by Beethoven, arr. Edward Hodges As you depart, please greet one another with the spirit of Christ s love. We also welcome you to join us in the Hospitality Room for friendship hour. Next Week s Scripture: Next week, we ll begin our new sermon series, Be Bold. Through the series, we ll explore what it means to step up, speak up, and step back. What does bold compassion looks like? Is it the same as tough love? How can we be bold in proclaiming God s love for all people? Can we be bold in taking sabbath? Our first text in the series is from Exodus 3:1-14, the call of Moses. Moses is not bold initially, but he listens and finds himself taking a leap of faith. Where is God calling you to be bold? Collecting Mount Kilimanjaro Pledges Join us on Sunday, September 16, after the second service, to gather for a Town Hall Meeting of the Minds to discuss the new direction and focus of the 6 church. Jon Mountain Goat Mitovich made it to the top! We are so grateful for all of you who pledged. We are collecting the pledges all of which benefit Family Promise of Albuquerque. There is a basket in the back of the Sanctuary where you can drop off your pledges.

Church of the Good Shepherd does this twice a year on the 5th Saturdays of September and December. We provide loaded baked potatoes, salad, beans, and cookies. The clients love this different kind of meal because most churches provide casseroles. We need your help! See the sign up in the hallway to sign up to clean and bake the potatoes, babysit the cooking potatoes, transport the food from COGS to the Day Center, or serve. We also need donations of bottled water (we need a total of 10 cases) and cookies (we need a total of 32 dozen). Donations of water and cookies can be placed on the west counter of the kitchen. Signs will be posted. Your generous support of this wonderful outreach is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please call Jenny Sanchez at or send an to her at: jjstango@gmail.com September Care Team Lead: Our Care Team Leads for the month of September are Chris Hoover and Val Main. If you have or know of a need that you feel the Care Team can assist with, please call Meg in the church office at or contact Chris/Val directly at (505) or at chrishoov@msn.com or van1867@hotmail.com 9

10 Bulletin Board September 9, 2018 COGS Book Club Monday, Sept 17 at 6:00pm Book: The Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly Discussion Leader: Wanita Eberhardt Host Home: Carol Jordan Book Club Lead Contact: Martha Tucker Cell: (781) Amazon Summary: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER For readers of The Nightingale and Sarah s Key, inspired by the life of a real World War II heroine, this remarkable debut novel reveals the power of unsung women to change history in their quest for love, freedom, and second chances. New York socialite Caroline Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the horizon. But Caroline s world is forever changed when Hitler s army invades Poland in September 1939 and then sets its sights on France. An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move can have dire consequences. For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power. The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their stories cross continents from New York to Paris, Germany, and Poland as Caroline and Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten.

12 We are delighted to have you worshiping with us today! Church of the Good Shepherd, UCC is a dynamic congregation with a rich history and an exciting ministry in the community. Our church is a part of a blend of four major Protestant denominations that united together in 1957 to form the United Church of Christ. We claim the early Pilgrim and Puritan settlers of this country as part of our heritage, and celebrate the words of Pastor John Robinson, who in his farewell remarks to the Pilgrims as they were leaving for the new world, said, There is still more light and truth to break forth from God s holy word. We are a church that: Takes the Bible seriously, but not literally. Worships God with joyful hearts and open minds. Includes children in the life and ministry of the church. Celebrates creativity and the arts. Seeks to be inclusive of ALL people. Believes that growth in wisdom and understanding happens at all stages of life. Is committed to work for justice for all people and for the environment. Cares for one another, laughs easily, and rests in God s love. Looks to Jesus as teacher, prophet and Child of God. Church of the Good Shepherd desires to be an inclusive community that shares Divine love as a path to peace and justice in the world. The mission of Church of the Good Shepherd is to build a just world through community one life at a time. 12 An Open and Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ 7834 Tennyson Street NE, Albuquerque, NM Office: No matter where you are on life s journey, you are welcome here.
