Volume 1 No. 6 A Joint Newsletter from the Ministries of The Presbyterian Church of Prospect and The Mt. Nebo Presbyterian Church May 2018 Reflections on the Weather It s snowing and it s less than 2 weeks before May begins. I m sitting in front of a fire, it s 31 degrees, and, according to the forecasters, the snow on the ground will be all gone when tomorrow arrives with temperatures in the high 50 s. We ll see. Weather is a lot like life, unpredictable and often beyond our control. We either accept and deal with both or we spend our time complaining and dreaming. Fortunately we re not helpless because neither weather nor life controls our attitudes. But our attitudes are deeply affected by other things that hide beneath the surface of our lives; beliefs and assumptions that we ve picked up along the way. Continued on Page 3

Page 3 Reflections on the weather Continued from Page 1 Robin likes to go for long runs and fast walks. Are you going out in the rain? I ask. Sure, I m not made of sugar so I won t melt, she says. She inspires me. The car in front of me is going 10mph below the speed limit and there hasn t been an open passing lane for miles. I m not driving an ambulance or fire engine so what s my rush? Somewhere I picked up the belief that the speed limit is mine; but it isn t. Back in the 60 s the me generation popularized an ancient attitude that thinks 1) every belief is equally worthwhile and 2) anything that keeps us from getting what we want should be eliminated. But those beliefs inevitably crash into one another. We live with attitudes that ignore truths that are spiritually inconvenient and that seek to control everything that is physically and intellectually uncomfortable. But life, like the weather, does not conform to our requirements. In spite of all the human effort to get things right, while at the same time saying each one of us determines what is right, we re adding to our suffering, confusion, and disappointment. Maybe that s because at the end of the day every one of us is still a creature in this world, needing the love, guidance, strength, and forgiveness of our Creator. Without the One who knows us and can change our deepest attitudes, we will be carried along by things deep within us that can end up hurting us and others, rather than helping. Continued on Page 4

Page 4 Reflections on the weather Continued from Page 3 Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to adjust our hidden attitudes so we can face the unpredictable and uncontrollable. Sometimes the Spirit mercifully changes those things and those people we can t, but his greatest transformation is within the people who are called new creations in Christ. May is a time of renewal and fresh growth. New attitudes grow beginning with faith, grounded in God s Word, and they produce endurance, character, and hope that doesn t disappoint because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us (Rom. 5:3-5). (Living by faith, I m moving my short sleeve shirts to the front of the closet!) Love in Christ, Pastor Steve TPCP Rummage Sale, Aug. 3-4 The annual church rummage sale is a big event. We need your help to make it successful and manageable. This year we will be receiving donations BEGINNING MONDAY, JULY 30. This will allow us more time to organize and less time moving donated items from upstairs to downstairs to upstairs again. Set aside your unwanted and gently-used items for the sale (no TVs, large electronics, or furniture please) and bring them in, starting on the Monday before the sale. Thank you.

Page 6 Ministry Highlights & Events At The Presbyterian Church of Prospect Pages 6 9 Our Trip to Lancaster On April 14th, 56 people loaded a bus very early in the morning and headed to Sight and Sound Theater in Lancaster to see their production of Jesus. The day started off with games and lots of laughter. Before the show we stopped at the Hershey Farm Restaurant and Inn for an amazing buffet lunch. We had everything from soup, salad, ham balls, and shoo fly pie. YUM! It was good and I think everyone ate way too much and we were ready for a nap but that wasn t on the schedule. After some shopping in their gift shop, we headed next door to the Sight and Sound Theater. This place is inspiring just looking at it from the outside. We had great seats for the show and I think we were all so excited and couldn t handle the anticipation of the show starting. Let me tell you-they did not disappoint. This show brought Jesus life to reality. The stage and props were incredible. The actors were so good and they even had animals that ran up the aisles and birds flying. How they trained these animals I ll never know. The story of Jesus life was breathtaking and I felt a sense of sadness and sorrow but also a greater sense of hope and joy. Even though this may not have been completely accurate, in every detail, and a bit theatrical at points, it left me thinking about what Jesus did for each and every one of us and it left me with a feeling of knowing everything was going to be okay and with the feeling of unexplainable joy and love. I looked around at all of the full seats in that theater knowing that every one of us was touched and it felt like we were all there as part of a great community. I am so grateful for the opportunity to go see this show and for the opportunity to go with these amazing people. I will not soon forget this feeling and experience. It has revived me, gave me a sense of peace, and let me know that even in this dark world, we are never alone as long as Jesus is in our hearts. I know I didn t really describe the show that well but it s hard to describe in full detail and for me it was more about the message and the feelings the show inspired. Lisa Holland

We are looking forward to finishing up our time together with fun classroom activities, field trips, ice cream sundaes and our all-school picnic. We would like to say a big Thank You to all those who worked so hard to make Preschool Sunday such an enjoyable time. A special thank you goes out to Kathy Gallagher who played the piano for us. Fourteen of our students came to church on April 15 th to sing during the worship service. Over 100 family members joined us that day for the service and many of them stayed for the pizza party afterward. It was a great time of fellowship! We are truly blessed with an amazing church family here at our school. Happy Mother s Day to all of our preschool Moms. We are so very grateful that you have chosen to share your little ones with us. They are a true blessing in our lives! We hope you all have a safe and enjoyable summer! See you in the fall! What an awesome experience and a wonderful witness to Jesus life, death and resurrection! The meal at Hershey Farm was delicious and the bus ride gave us an opportunity to spend time getting to know each other better. God provided beautiful weather, safe travels and a powerful reminder of the sacrifice Jesus made for us. Bev McKinney Ben Patton scheduled a work day at the church on Saturday, April 21st. We had a terrific turn out. We were able to clean up all the stones in the grass. We raked up all the leaves and pine cones. The yard looks great now.
