2 RELIVING THE MEMORIES OF YESTERDAY It is that time of year again. The tradition of rushing from task to task to ensure that you have the perfect Christmas for you and your family. It is also time for one of our own traditions here at Christmas and one that you can take some time out from your busy schedule to enjoy and share. It is our old photographs edition. Old photographs have a timeless feel about them and unlike many of the instant memories that are created today by way of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram they last forever. Even though many are in black and white, there is a charming colourful story behind each one of them as that perfect moment in time is captured. It is a great honour for us in the Sliabh Luachra to be able to share these with you each year and we thank all those who have given in their precious pictures for publication. We know that they hold pride of place in your lives and we appreciate your trust in letting us share them with the wider community. Nollaig shona dhaoibh. 8 JOHNNY BROSNAN A CHAMPION REMEMBERED Johnny Brosnan - the 1963 five mile track champion Today he is better known as the local taxi driver and you are certainly going to see him travelling to and from Kerry Airport with the latest tourist to come to our county. Still Currow s Johnny Brosnan love of driving is only second to his love of cycling and in a time when people talked about champions like Bobet, Anquetil and Merckx, the name Brosnan was as big on the national scene in a time when cycling was at its golden period within the county. In fact Johnny was captain of Kerry s Ras Tailteann cycling team in 1963 and went on to win the Irish title on the track with a victory in the Five mile Championships at Blarney Open Sports. The young garage mechanic at the time won the race in facile fashion with 150 yards separating him from the rest of the field, as he proved too powerful in the last mile once he had broken free of the field. A year later in the 1964 Ras he came within inches of a Ras Stage victory as he was credited with third in a three man sprint into Galway having started off in Castleisland in Stage 4. Johnny made a bold for victory and went off on his own before Ennis and going through the town, he had a 1-minute lead over Sonny Cullen, Johnny Lonergan and Wexford's Larry Doran. The four came together and at one time, their lead was over 2 minutes but was cut back to under 20 seconds as they approached Galway. In the sprint that ensured he ended up third behind Cullen of Dublin. Today he looks back at those days with great nostalgia of a time when cycling was held in the highest of esteem. They were great times and they were great people involved. I probably have forgot more than I have remembered now but the names still reside with me and they were special times. He told the Outlook. 34 MARGARET S RAMBLINGS GO WALKING THIS CHRISTMAS Regular physical activity is essential for good health. It reduces the risk of chronic diseases (like heart disease, stroke, certain cancers and type 2 diabetes), promotes healthy weight, reduces the risk for depression, lowers blood pressure and decreases stress. All it takes is 30 minutes a day. Moderate walking is a terrific form of exercise, as it doesn t over-stress that body like some more intense activities can. ARE YOU GETTING A PET FOR CHRISTMAS? If you have decided a pet is for life and you are eagerly looking forward to caring for it, then you might like to know that from a data base of 652,536 kitten names in the U.S. Luna was number one on the female list. In 2nd place was Bella followed by Lucy, Kitty and Chloe. The top 5 male kittens names were Oliver, Charlie, Max, Leo and Milo. On the dog scene of the 1,512,750 names on the data list the most popular names for the males were Max, Charlie, Cooper, Buddy and Rocky. In the females Bella was the most popular followed by Lucy, Daisy, Sadie and Luna. 5 OF THE MOST CHARITABLE BILLIONAIRES *Mark Zuckerberg, Founder of Facebook whose net worth is estimated at $35.7 billion and his wife, Priscilla Chan, announced recently that they would create a limited liability company to give away $45 billion in Facebook shares to personalised learning initiatives, curing disease and building strong communities. *Bill Gates, (Net Worth: $79.2 billion) Founder of Microsoft and his wife, Melinda, have given away no less than $28 billion through their foundation to initiatives aimed at improving health, education and economic development in developing countries. *Warren Buffett is the world s most successful financial investor who has been ranked as the world s richest man in the past with an estimated net worth of $48.6 billion. Aside from his business success, he is well-known for giving away billions of dollars to charity in lump sums, with the last giveaway being worth $2.8 billion, which is believed to bring his total donations to at least $25.5 billion. *Billionaire investor George Soros (Net Worth: $24 billion) is renowned for his charitable work and is believed to have donated $11 billion. *Azim Premji an Indian IT entrepreneur with a net worth said to be $15.9 billion has donated over $8 billion to philanthropic initiatives to date. His foundation, the Azim Premji Foundation, is primarily concerned with causes related to universal education and advocacy in his home country. HOW CHRISTMAS IS CELEBRATED IN SOME COUNTRY S AROUND THE WORLD *In Italy, a nativity scene, a presepe, is usually put up in churches, town squares and often in houses and is for many the most important parts of Christmas decorations. The nativity scene display with a crib filled with straw, originally stems from Italy and is now common occurrence in many countries around the world. In Italy, Babbo Natale, that's how Father Christmas is called in Italian, hands out presents to children on Christmas Day. Still in many families, gifts are exchanged only on January 6th that is the day of Epiphany. *In Germany houses are often decorated with lights and ornaments in December, however the Christmas tree is usually only put up in the homes on the morning of the 24th of December. *In Iceland, Christmas celebrations start on 24th of December, Christmas eve. Families get together and enjoy good food and many visit midnight Mass, children put their shoes on the windowsill so the Juletide Lads, the Santa Claus, fills the shoes with little goodies. *In the Philippines there is a special tradition of Written By Margaret Houlihan Tel: islagrantno1@eircom.net having a Christmas lantern, which is called paról ; the lantern is star-shaped, remembering the star of Bethlehem, and mainly made out of bamboo and paper. *In Singapore, about two in ten people are Christians. Christmas however is very commercialised and stunning decorations can be seen everywhere in the main shopping district. *In Australia, it is tradition in the weeks up to Christmas to join in Christmas picnics organised by various churches and sing Christmas carols on the beach. As Australia is on the southern hemisphere, Christmas is in summer time and during Christmas time friends and family often gather at the beach. *In Brazil, you will often find a presepio, a crib or nativity scene, in front of a church. The Papai Noel, or Father Christmas, travels from Greenland to Brazil to give presents to Brazilian children. Many cities display Christmas trees during the month leading up to Christmas and often the year end is celebrated with fireworks. *In South Africa, there are many Christmas concerts during the weeks leading up to Christmas, many people attend religious ceremonies on Christmas Day and people celebrate with the family often with a braai, similar to a BBQ, as it is also summer season there. *In the U.S. on Christmas Day, families get together for a festive meal after exchanging gifts. On December 26th friends and family are usually visited to exchange gifts. It is customary to send and give Christmas cards. Some people write on cards: Merry Xmas! Xmas stands for Christmas, the X symbolises the cross. NEW YEAR The turn of the year is a good time to review your own progress. Maybe you could set aside some time to assess where you re at. Have you reached a dead end? Or are you facing so many interesting opportunities that you re frankly a bit overwhelmed? Sometimes it pays to write it all down, and look at your options. The spotless housekeeping part of the tradition hardly sounds appealing, but if you re anything like me, you might feel a lot less overwhelmed if you at least cleaned the area around your desk, and tried to catch up with your filing! Lastly, of course, there are the traditional New Year s resolutions. Does anyone actually keep them? The people of the town of Lanark which is a small town in the central belt of Scotland certainly believe in keeping one at any rate it is the ceremony in which Lanarkians of mature years can nip into the Tollbooth at 10am on a Ne erday morning to claim a drink on the Burgh, a tradition that probably dates beck far longer than recorded history now tells us. To modern eyes, it might look like some ancient, post- Hogmanay hair of the dog treatment service but, in fact, the origins of The Het Pint go way, way back to pre-welfare State times when that old form of Scottish charity The Common Weal was observed throughout the land, especially in the nation s Royal Burghs. At some point in history, one now very long-departed Lanark leading light with a heart of gold said to themself: It s alright for us comfortably-off folk raising a glass to toast in the New Year... but what about the poor of the Burgh? And so it came to pass that, on Ne erday (New Years Day to you and me) morn, any Lanarkian, no matter how poor, could belatedly claim his Hogmanay toast from the town council. These days, the town council is long gone but The Het Pint is proudly carried on by the Community Council, even the fuzziest-headed members of the council make their way to the Tollbooth at 10am to help dispense the ancient concoction to claimants. Lanark is traditionally the county town of Lanarkshire, though there are several larger towns in Sliabh Luachra Outlook Pg 34 the county. Lanark railway station and coach station have frequent services to Glasgow. There is little industry in Lanark and some residents commute to work in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Its shops serve the local agricultural community and surrounding villages. LITTLE CHRISTMAS (IRISH: NOLLAIG BHEAG) is one of the traditional names in Ireland for the 6th of January, it is also widely known in the rest of the world as the Feast of the Epiphany. It is sometime thought that it is called this because under the older Julian calendar, Christmas Day celebrations fell on that day whereas under the Gregorian calendar it falls on the 25th of December. However the eastern tradition of celebrating the birth of Jesus on January 6th precedes the creation of the Gregorian calendar by hundreds of years. By the year 1500 AD eastern Churches were celebrating Christmas on January 6th and western churches were celebrating it on December 25th even though both were using the Julian calendar. It is the traditional end of the Christmas season and until 2013 was the last day of the Christmas holidays for both primary and secondary schools in Ireland. *In the Scottish Highlands the term Little Christmas (Scottish Gaelic: Nollaig Bheag) is applied to New Year's Day, also known as Là Challuinn, or Là na Bliadhna Ùire, while Epiphany is known as Là Féill nan Rìgh, the feast-day of the Kings *In the Isle of Man, New Year's Day on January 1st was formerly called Laa Nolick beg in Manx, or Little Christmas Day, while January 6th was referred to as Old Christmas Day. The name Little Christmas is also found in other languages including Slovene (mali Boži ), Galician (Nadalinho), and Ukrainian. *In Scandinavia, where the main celebration of Christmas is on Christmas Eve, the evening of the 23rd is known as little Christmas eve. In Norway and Sweden, Little Christmas Day refers to January 13th twenty days after Christmas, and is regarded as the day when ornaments must be removed from Christmas trees and any leftover food must be eaten. *In some parts of the Spanish-speaking world, Christmas Day is strictly religious, and gifts are exchanged on the feast of the Epiphany, when the wise men (or Magi) brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus. Tradition names them Gaspar, Melchior and Balthasar. The custom of blessing homes on Epiphany developed because the feast commemorates the time that the three kings visited the home of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. The 12 days of Christmas begin on Christmas Day (December 25th) and end on January 5th, eve of the traditional date of the Epiphany. *In other parts of the world, it is sometimes referred to as Old Christmas or Old Christmas Day. *In Ireland Little Christmas is also called Women's Christmas (Irish: Nollaig na mban), and sometimes Women's Little Christmas. The tradition, still very strong in Cork and Kerry is so called because of the Irish men taking on all the household duties for the day. Traditionally most women held parties or went out to celebrate the day with their friends, sisters, mothers, and aunts. Bars and restaurants served mostly women and girls on this night. Finally this year I would also like to wish all readers, correspondents, advertisers, and all at Walsh Colour Print and Educate.ie, our emigrants who are unable to get home for Christmas and our migrant population who are unable to be reunited with their families, all hospital patients, those in Nursing Homes and those who have to work over the Christmas holidays every happiness and I hope the beautiful season is filled with surprises and delight for you all and may 2016 bring you happiness, good health and success.
