That is only partially true. It does take one or more parents, extended family, siblings, neighbors, friends, godparents, teachers, best friends, health care folks but, at the end of my incomplete list, I want to declare that it takes a loving parish church. For many years now, decades even, I have stood in awe and wonder at the Cathedral s ministry with children and youth When I served as Archdeacon I would often hold out the Cathedral s ministry and culture of welcome and hospitality for young people as a model worthy of emulating. I would also recommend to caring people in other parishes that they talk with the cathedral members who are engaged in ministry with children and youth and who lovingly provide a welcome place for all kids to be their unique God-given selves; not so much to talk with the cathedral folks about what they do, but about how and why the Cathedral does what it does when it comes to kids. I have watched out-going kids and super shy kids and athletic kids and geeky kids and skinny kids and chubby kids and more (!) find a home at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity. And it is beautiful to watch over the years as they grow from little ones being encouraged and cared for to the seniors who model and personify that encouragement and caring for each and every person; seeing with the eyes of God the goodness of each one. I have seen adults just plain refuse to give up on a youngster who was reluctant or fearful or distracted or bored. I have seen them week in and week out give themselves to the kids. I have seen them take precious vacation time from their employment and from their own families to provide some experience or other for a class. I have seen them mentor countless young people over the years forging bonds of affection that continue well into the youngster s adult years. Whether it is in the nursery, Sunday School classes, camp, J2A, pilgrimage, mission work trip, burger bash, service as acolytes or other liturgical ministers; there is always, always, always the goal of nurturing them in the knowledge and love of the Lord and their welcome in God's community and their place at Jesus' table. Then Jesus took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me. Mark 9:36-37 Being back at the Cathedral (almost) full-time these three months has shown me yet again, that Jesus is welcome here and so are the children. May God bless the children. May God bless the parish that has placed them at the center of their community life. -Archdeacon Rick Cluett

PAGE 2 JOIN US FOR BREAKFAST REAKFAST! Continuing throughout the Summer! 9-10 AM in Our Dining Room Would you or your ministry or committee like to host a breakfast? A group of six is a good number for a host group. (Three couples or any six friends.) Breakfast casseroles work great. Volunteers cook, serve and clean up. If hosts want, they can use paper plates and cups to cut down on cleanup. If interested, call the church office at , Karyn Arcario at , Beth Vorosmarti at

PAGE 3 EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY "I think possibilities often come unexpectedly, and what you do with them, how much you're willing to risk for them, can change your life and make it more than you ever imagined it could be." (quote from Treachery in Death by JD Robb) Four years ago I was searching for "something". I didn't know what that something was so I didn't know how to fix it. I recall reading one of Marlene Yocum's articles about EfM in the MediaRite and spent some time thinking about it. I made the commitment, took that leap of faith, challenged myself, and will never regret that decision. I have not come out of four years spouting dogmas (as some have asked me). Each year was different, not only due to the subject matter, but the mix of people changed. Some stayed, some graduated, some took a break for various reasons. All will be forever a part of my memories. What I discovered was...unconditional love...sharing of life...wisdom and insights...an awareness of and deepening of my faith...a change in the way I think. It has been an amazing journey and it will be interesting to see what is next. If you have any questions, please ask. Take that leap of faith. It's awesome. -Debbie Bast, Church of the Mediator, Allentown 2013 graduate of Education for Ministry (EfM) Please contact Cathy Bailey for more information about EfM cbnnp@rcn.com RESERVE THE DATE!!! Actual work should not take more than 2 weeks. - Pledges in the summer have a tendency to slacken, please remember that bills still need to be paid over the summer. Don t forget that electronic pledging is easy and a big help to our finances. - Speakers to be going into church as work on the sound system continues. THANK YOU! YAC, J2A, and Rite 13 thank the congregation for supporting their trip to the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. We visited the museum, helped a stranger in need and had dinner with the youth at St. Georges in Bowie, MD. It was a wonderful trip and one that we hope to do again soon!!

PAGE 6 Greetings from your Sunday School Teachers! FIRST DAY OF SUNDAY SCHOOL We hope everyone is enjoying the summer! As a reminder for your fall calendar, Sunday School will begin on September 8th and the Burger Bash will follow on September 15th. More details to come in the September Parish Visitor. PRIDE IN THE PARK It s that time of year again! The Cathedral is serving as a sponsoring parish for the Bethlehem Diocese s tent at the annual Pride in the Park event. This year s Pride in the Park will be held on Sunday, August 18th, from 12 P.M. 6 P.M. at Cedar Beach Park in Allentown, and the Diocese is asking for volunteers to help 1) staff the tent on Sunday and/or 2) help to set up the tent on Saturday, 8/17. If you are interested in helping out, or if you just have questions about the event, please contact Michael Pesavento at christmascitytoys@yahoo.com. If you have a chance, talk to some of the people who have helped with this event in past years it is a powerful and important opportunity to know Christ, to make him known, and to serve others according to his example. BY POPULAR REQUEST! Krueger's Overnight Egg Casserole (lighter version) as found on the net, Food.com. Corn tortillas (I used eight) 8 large eggs 4 egg whites 2 1/2 cups skimmed milk 1 cup low fat cottage cheese 3/4 teas salt 3/4 teas pepper 1 1/2 cups feta cheese 1 1/4 cups green onion finely sliced (reserve 1/4 cup for garnish) 1 1/2 cups salsa for garnish Spray a 9x13 baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. Cut tortillas into 1" strips and set aside. In a large bowl whisk eggs and egg whites. Add skim milk, cottage cheese, salt and pepper. Stir well. Add feta cheese, a cup of onions, and tortilla strips. Mix well. Pour into prepared baking pan. Cover tightly with foil. Rf overnight or eight hours. Bake in preheated 325 degree oven covered for one hour. Bake uncovered for twenty minutes. Let cool for five minutes and cut into twelve squares. Garnish and serve. Note: I tripled the recipe and put it in the very large pan that fits into the top large oven. We raised the temp to 375 degrees after a half hour to forty five minutes. It baked for about one hour fifty minutes. It served at least forty people with seconds and leftovers.

PAGE 7 Dean Pompa Returns Dean Pompa will return from his sabbatical on August 1st, and our new Assistant, The Rev. Kimberly Rowles Reinholz, will also begin her ministry at the Cathedral on August 1st. FROM THE DIOCESE Introducing Peace Pages! The Diocesan Peace Commission has as one of its objectives to Apply a Christian understanding to issues of war and violence in order to create alternatives to violence and to build a culture of peace and justice. To that end, this is the first release to parishes with the hope and prayer that you will include it in your parish newsletter. Understanding Islam We have been studying the conflict between Muslims and Christians to identify the real issues. We have concluded that the Muslim terrorists do not represent Islam any more than the Crusaders in the middle ages represented Christianity. Islamaphobia is a stereotype that paints all Muslims with the same brush. This is the very essence of prejudice. The fact is that Muslims and Christians are more alike than they are different. Muhammad lived in a society where Muslims, Christians, Jews, and polytheists knew each other, and were well aware of each other s theological writings. It is no accident that four of the five major prophets of Islam are well known to us in the Torah and the Gospels. Muhammad taught love, benevolence, and acceptance of other beliefs. His peaceful goals, even in his own lifetime, were perverted by people who were motivated by greed, hunger for power, and self-serving ambition. Sound familiar? We have been told to take the log out of our own eye before taking the splinter out of our neighbor s eye. We should understand that the Muslim extremists do not represent Islam any more than Christian extremists repres ent the whole of Christianity. If we have any reservations, let those who are without sin cast the first stone. If you are interested in receiving regular updates like this from the Diocesan Peace Commission, please visit the Episcopal Diocese of Bethlehem s website at select the Get Connected form, and then select Peace Pages from the choices listed. The first several will be shared through the Bakery Mailing List, but will shortly be delivered exclusively through their own subscription. -Adam Bond, Missioner for Communications The Parish Visitor is published monthly except during August by the Cathedral Church of the Nativity. Deadline for articles is the 10th of the month and can be submitted through the church office or to the editor at parishvisitor@nativitycathedral.org.
