1 THE PARISH VISITOR From the Dean s Desk LIVING THE STORY OCTOBER Cathedral Church of the Nativity Living the Story as a: Welcoming Haven Caring Community Nurturing space for children and youth Congregation committed to serving A dedicated and prayerful group of folk with many of your feedback remind us of our core values with this message we seek to share! The story of Christ is born in us here in this Cathedral and we live this story as faithfully as we can. How excited I am this fall with the energy that is around us. Church school is bustling, music is vibrant, the sounds of voices caring for one another billow through the hallways. Those in need of our witness await as we move into the winter months and consider the challenging ministry of homelessness. Consider our core values reflected in the statement above. As we enter this fall you will be hearing from the Stewardship committee of course as we ask one another to share our gifts of time, talent, and treasure. Hear my prayers of thanksgiving for you all as you share your gifts that make Christ s incarnation real through your participation in our mission and ministry! 2 PAGE 2 OUR ANNUAL GIVING CAMPAIGN Thank you for being part of the story Count your blessings. That simple exercise will provoke generosity. Walk through this building. Think of the babies you have baptized here, the weddings you ve celebrated, the services of Witness to the Resurrection in which you have given thanks that God in Christ has conquered death. Think of the ways in which you have been challenged and inspired, comforted and uplifted, by the sermons you have heard, by exchanges you have had with others, by music for your soul, by sacrament that has fed you. Think of the ministries this building houses, neighborhood kids being tutored, homeless being sheltered and fed, strangers finding hospitality and affordable clothing, speakers sharing inspiration for the tired, grace being found among small groups following steps toward recovery. Rejoice in our many ministries in Bethlehem, the Diocese, and the world. From New Bethany Ministries to Habitat, from diocesan gatherings to, partnering with prayers in South Sudan. Consider how generous God has been to you and to this congregation, and your generosity will overflow in a reflection of God s love. The Campaign takes place throughout October and early November. Please watch for your mailing and vestry and leaders look forward to connecting with you in person and by phone. Bring your Pledge card (received by mail or downloaded from website) to any service throughout October and early November or return to the Church office. Join us for our 152nd Birthday Celebration! 3 PAGE 3 A MESSAGE FROM MOTHER KIM I took this photograph about 10 years ago when I visited Taize in France. For those of you who don t know what Taize is: it s an ecumenical community of faith situated in the Burgundy region of France. Established by Br Roger in 1940 as a safe haven for those escaping World War II this village has been transformed in the past nearly 75 years into a pilgrimage site for youth and young people from all over the world to come together worship God and be together in a peaceful, meditative environment. This image of St Francis is in the original chapel and it has been an inspirational image for me that I have carried with me for all these years. I want to share it with you as a gift as I think about the GIFT program that we will offer this October as well as our other observations marking the life and ministry of St. Francis of Assisi. The Feast of St Francis of Assisi is October 4. We choose to celebrate his life and ministry on the Sunday following this feast this year through a daylong celebration which begins with our October GIFT Gathering. Where we will have a special presentation from our friends at the Lehigh Valley Zoo, who will be coming to talk to us about conservation and bringing along 5 animal ambassadors, including an African Penguin. The presentation is designed for children and adults ages 6 and up. All are welcome and it will begin promptly at 9:15 am. During all of our services (and throughout the month of October) our mission project collection will be for items needed for the Peaceable Kingdom in Whitehall. They have provided us with a wish list that is included on page XXX of this edition of the Parish Visitor). If you are interested in delivering these items with Mother Kim on Monday November 3, 2014 please let her know. In the evening we will celebrate our own furry, scaly, and feathered friends with our Annual Evensong and Blessing of Animals liturgy. This will be our second evensong of the new program year under the direction of Stephen Williams and we are excited to hear what the choir offers up. I love this service as it always provides me with an opportunity to bring my (no longer officially but I still call him one anyway) puppy, Indiana to work with me. This year I am hoping to also have at least one potbellied pig in the pews as well as a few felines and other pets in the congregation. The service begins at 5 pm. Bring your friends and neighbors for this annual observation of St. Francis life and ministry to all of God s creation. I look forward to seeing you there! Peaceable Kingdom Wish List: Bleach and laundry detergent Canned food - any brand Cat litter Dish soap and sponges Dog and cat toys Dog and cat treats Dry food: Purina One or Pro Plan Freedom No-Pull Harnesses/leashes Household cleaners like Fabuloso, Mr. Clean, Lysol, Clorox wipes, Windex, Pledge Kong toys and peanut butter Latex gloves Leashes, harnesses, and collars Martingale collars Mops and brooms Nyla bones and other "indestructible" toys Paper towels Trash bags
4 PAGE 4 PARKING AT THE CATHEDRAL The Cathedral has 2 lots. The upper lot, with access from Wyandotte Street and the Lower lot with access from 4 th Street. (The lower lot is encouraged and necessary for those who need elevator access to the Cathedral and Sayre Hall) AMPLE ALTERNATIVE PARKING (AN EASY 3 TO 5 MINUTE WALK TO CATHEDRAL) (1) Masonic Temple located on the West side of 378 and Wyandotte Street, next to the Sayre Mansion Inn. Parking lot is accessed from Cherokee Street. Cherokee Street is one block west of the Cathedral on 3 rd Street. The entrance to the Masonic lot is off of Cherokee (between 3 rd and Brighton Sts.) Once parked, if you walk to the front of the Masonic Temple for access to Wyandotte Street you can then use the crosswalk at the light to reach the Cathedral. Cross with care. (When temple is holding events parking is prohibited, this is rare on Sunday mornings, and we will communicate by e-blast those rare times.) (2) On Street parking on surrounding streets of the Cathedral as available: 3 rd Street, metered parking on 4 th Street, metered parking in the 400 block of Wyandotte Street. (There is no need to feed the meters on Sundays.) (3) Off Street Lot next to Lehigh Pizza at corner of 3 rd and New Streets. (Meters need not be fed on Sunday mornings.) A NOTE ABOUT PARKING We are particularly grateful and encouraging to those who have ability to park in alternative locations allowing space for those among us who benefit from parking in Cathedral lots and those who may be visiting for the first time. We are even more grateful to your mindfulness of the lower lot being the access to the elevator for those who need it. In the past we have been able to park at the Chabad Center directly across Wyandotte Street and in the lot located at 4 th and Wyandotte. You may not park now in either of those places. Perhaps when renovations are finished at Chabad, we will have use. TOP 5 REASONS FOR THOSE WHO ARE ABLE TO PARK AT ALTERNATIVE PARKING SITES ON SUNDAY MORNINGS -- (LIKE THE MASONIC TEMPLE) 1. Three minutes and 30 seconds or thereabouts! That s the length of the walk from the Masonic Temple (depending on pedestrian lights at crosswalk). 2. That is less time than it takes to circle the Cathedral lots just one time waiting for a spot to open up! 3. You will live longer because of the stress reduction of parking in an ample lot and having an easy stroll! 4. You will restrict your time playing bumper cars to your visits to an amusement park! 5. If you let the Dean know you parked there, he might hug you, thank you, or maybe even give you a dollar off coupon for a cup of coffee? (maybe) 6. On a serious note, it truly does allow for those among us who need to park closer to the Cathedral to be assured of a space and for those visiting for the first time to find welcome on their first visit. Okay, that s six! We are grateful!

Mrs. Hurd s response to her faith was evidenced in her working and supporting causes that sought to serve and transform lives and society. Mrs. Hurd was known throughout the Lehigh Valley as a generous philanthropist committed to higher education, healthcare, and the support of the neediest among us. We at this Cathedral knew her as a person of faith and devotion, supportive of ministries of music, worship, and service to our neighbors in need. Mrs. Hurd died in February of 2013, this series is in her honor and spirit.

7 PAGE 7 The Vestry met on Monday, September 15, VESTRY The property committee reported that 85% of all the piping is installed. The individual runouts to all fan coil units, cabinet heaters, convectors, and radiation are scheduled to be completed by the end of the month. The new heating system will be operational in the church and Sayre hall by the end of the month. The Vestry is happy to announce a new marketing strategy for the Cathedral. Our new message is: Cathedral Church of the Nativity Living the Story as a: Welcoming Haven Caring Community Nurturing space for children and youth Congregation committed to serving Join us and become part of the story. The Marketing group, being led by Dana Whedon, is working on improving the Cathedral s presence in the community. The Vestry approved the following expenditures from the Third Millennium Fund: $7500 to fund the Cathedral s Mission Initiative with Dwight Zscheile. $3000 to fund the Celtic Experience at the Cathedral. They Vestry had a very serious discussion about The Room at The Inn. We are concerned that we will be unable to continue offering space to the homeless because of a shortage of volunteers to help run the program. We especially need people to sleep overnight with the quests and to clean up on Friday morning. The shelter program begins in December. We are asking you to please pray fully consider helping out. Please inform the office or Deacon Rodney Conn if you wish to volunteer. The Vestry will meet again on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 6:30 pm.
