2 PAGE 2 VOLUME 68, ISSUE 8 From the Dean s Desk... Go on say it, Hallelujah! I received a letter recently from The Rev. Carol Borne Stewart, the director of the Hallelujah Housing project, a ministry aimed at helping families rebuild following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Carol was thanking us for our part in helping families rebuild there. You will remember that Eastertide 2008 the Easter offering was designated to help rebuild those affected by Katrina. Not only did we dedicate our funds but James Vorosmarti, then serving as Jr. warden of the vestry set about the task of gathering volunteers to make the trip to Mississippi and to take part in the physical, spiritual, and emotional labor of helping to rebuild homes for families. Our team sent from Bethlehem, I believe, carried the Eastertide greeting of Hallelujah to Mississippi. The message of resurrection, of new life, was and is never more tangible than when God s people follow the risen Jesus into the rough places of peoples lives singing songs of hope! Hallelujah! The Johnson family, one of the families who are home again because of the Hallelujah Housing Project. Our crew! James Vorosmarti, Beth Vorosmarti, Bob Lynn, Ray Vernon, Elizabeth Yale, Bernie Leroe, and Dave Simons As I m writing this Easter is almost a month away, and spring is starting to peek out from the melting dregs of a mighty winter. We ve had two sunny days in a row, and I m wearing sandals even though it isn t really warm enough for that yet-my toes are getting some sunshine and my mind is wandering to planning a garden for my backyard, even though there is still a large heap of snow slowly dissolving where the tomato plants will be. My spirit is starting to emerge from the warm, close place deep within me where it has been hibernating during the short days of the past few months. Like my frigid toes in their too-soon summer shoes, my soul is also rushing a little prematurely into the new birth of Easter and the promise of the resurrection around me in the budding daffodils and new green growth on the trees. It is hard, during these liminal times between seasons, between the darkness of Good Friday and the glory of Easter Sunday, to be comfortable in the uncertainties of the present. It is much safer to look back to the known and already done, or rush forward into the promise of the future, but there is value in staying put despite the discomfort. I think it is in that place of uncertainty, of the unknown, of what religious writers have called the tension of the already, not yet that the Holy Spirit dwells, and the Kingdom of God is laid open before us, and we come to know ourselves a little better in our relationship to Christ. And so, though my heart is longing for the hot long days of summer, I do my best to wait patiently, with Jesus, to see what new revelation is coming into being in the here and the now. The Rev. Canon Mariclair Partee

3 PAGE 3 VOLUME 68, ISSUE 8 VIEWS FROM YOUR CANON MISSIONER Old frail Mary, the too-large coat you inevitably wore no matter the season must have weighed more than you. Yet, every day you inched your way down that steep Fourth Street hill to New Bethany s Fourth Street kitchen. And later, more slowly now than before, up the hill you went again. Old frail Mary, reassuringly expressed on that soft face of yours was the gentleness of a smile too wondrous to behold. And the softness of your voice sounded of a tenderness Angels must have adored. Old frail Mary lent her loveliness to us, a motley crew in a place too filed with pain. But now her light is gone and though we ve been changed, it s not the same without her here. The Rev. Joel Atkinson The Cathedral office will close at Noon on Good Friday, April 2. Regular office hours will resume on Tuesday, April 6. You have your doctors, your lawyers, your Indian chiefs [oops, no, that was the big song at the Spaghetti Supper]. Anyway, the many facets of life are well represented by our parishioners. Our April Past and Present Luncheon will be visited by two shopkeepers in our neighborhood. One is handling the characteristics of Main Street on the north side, while the other is keeping her thumb on the pulse of the south side. Come on Friday, April 23 at 11 AM to hear Mary Mulder and Maureen Schenkel talk about what it takes to create and keep a small store. If we re lucky, they ll give us a peek at some of their merchandise, as well as fill us in on the life of a shopkeeper.

6 PAGE 6 VOLUME 68, ISSUE 8 Growing the Church: A perspective of how and why we grow our Church We continue a focus on the pieces of the puzzle that make for a welcoming Church. Again, what is your experience of the following as it pertains to our Cathedral Church. From Churchtoolbox.org Nursery Clean Secure procedures (children registered) Consistent trained workers Greeting team stationed Brochure explaining the procedures Atmosphere The atmosphere should reflect the tone of the parish. Will there be pre-service music? Prelude? Reflective or upbeat? Lighting: Is it appropriate to the mood desired at each particular service? Pace/Moods: The service should move smoothly and efficiently, without feeling rushed. Watch transitions between parts of service. How does mood change from Worship space to other Sunday programs? Are clergy and staff mindful of special needs? Smell: Coffee brewing? Incense? Flowers? Make sure any smells are positive and inviting. Not musty, Not offensive Decor What do people see when they first walk in the door? Is any information up to date and an accurate portrayal of the current church community s values and diversity. What are the decorations and symbols saying about your parish? Seating and space (Callahan s distinction) Is it comfortable? A church feels full when 80% of the seats are taken. Newcomers want the back pews and aisle seats. Train ushers and regular attendees to a few of these free. Clergy and other worship leaders Warmth and enthusiasm: match the person with the assignment Genuine Attire: not fashion, but grooming; coordinated; mirrors audience (formal to informal) Clergy or other speakers should assume that there s always somebody in the audience who doesn t know who you re talking about ANNUAL MEETING INFORMATION Cathedral Church of the Nativity 321 Wyandotte Street Bethlehem, Pennsylvania March 12, 2010 Dear Friends: I am writing to invite you to participate in an important event at the Cathedral Church of the Nativity. The annual parish meeting will be held Sunday, April 25 following the 10:30 a.m. service. The holding of an annual meeting is directed by the By-laws of the parish. The guidelines for voting, an annual meeting schedule, and instructions for absentee balloting are contained on the pages that follow. The annual meeting historically is a time where necessary business of the parish is conducted. The presentation of an annual budget, the election of members to the vestry, and the election of delegates to the annual convention of the diocese takes place. First and foremost, the annual meeting is a celebration of the ministry of the Cathedral and an opportunity for the leadership to discuss opportunities for the future and challenges presented to the fulfillment of our mission. A fellowship lunch will also be provided following the meeting. In the years to come, I look forward to increasing the emphasis on themes of our future in a context of celebration of who God has called us to be, as a community of faith, in the city of Bethlehem! In that spirit we will also focus some of our attention on the report from our vision work and its progress. I look forward to seeing you on April 25. Faithfully Yours, Tony The Very Rev. Anthony R. Pompa

During the 27 years, I ve been involved in a variety of the areas of life at the Cathedral ranging from the fair through camp, the Communications Committee, Junior Youth Group, SSM KIDs, to being among the first few women who began singing with the girls choir, Past & Present Program/Luncheon, and chairing the Parish Profile Committee. The two aspects that have been a constant through my time here have been teaching 3 rd /4 th grade in the Sunday School and being part of various kitchen crews. It is because of my involvement with Sunday School that I also have been able to direct my very favorite: The Christmas Pageant. How awesome are the kids of this Parish?!!! My list of interests is too extensive to list. Voracious reading aside, I like to try my hand at many things; a sort of whatever needs fixing, doing, and especially creating creating with paint, cloth, words, deeds...even music, when I wake up the Cathedral neighborhood at 8:00 Sunday mornings by ringing the tower bells. 12 PAGE 12 VOLUME 68, TERM at The Cathedral Church of the Nativity The Gospel According to Disgust The latest frontier in psychology is the study of disgust. Different than fear, disgust is the aversion to certain icky things that abound in our world. Thanks to being married to a psychologist, Fr. Matthew has discovered that our new scientific knowledge of disgust has a powerful resonance with the wisdom of the Christian faith. In fact, some of our discoveries have been prefigured by Holy Scripture and church practices! Fr. Matthew will introduce you to the study and treatment of disgust, and provide a fresh, if somewhat disgusting, look at our entire Christian tradition.
