2 PAGE 2 THE PARISH VISITOR VOLUME 69, ISSUE 8 From the Dean s Desk... In a recent sermon I relayed the story again of Ruby Bridges, the then young six-year-old African American child who courageously broke the racial barrier as the first to enter an all white school in 1960 New Orleans. For me the most powerful part of that story, of course, is how the power of prayer transformed so many lives in this story. You ll remember that Ruby s discipline of prayer was one that got her through angry mobs of protesters each and every day. Ruby, in her own words, reflects on what her mother taught her as she left for school escorted by federal marshals: My mother said to me, Remember, if you get afraid, say your prayers. You can pray to God anytime, anywhere. He will always hear you. That was how I started praying on the way to school. The things people yelled at me didn't seem to touch me. Prayer was my protection. The story goes that one day Ruby stopped in the midst of the angry mob and started moving her lips. She recalls how she responded that day, I wasn't talking to them, I was praying for them. Usually I prayed in the car on the way to school, but that day I'd forgotten until I was in the crowd. Please be with me, I'd asked God, and be with those people, too. Forgive them because they don't know what they're doing. Considering all of the possible responses to such a difficult situation, how powerful and life changing was her response of prayer. Those around this little girl were changed forever because of who she was and how her life in prayer led her through a season of fire. When we consider the question of the power of prayer, perhaps this one story gives us a glimpse. Perhaps you are already aware of our call to a discipline of Joining churches up and down the east coast, we are invited to a prayerful discipline: Twenty minutes of prayerful reflection to touch the holy that lives inside of us. One hour a week in corporate worship with others who bring before God our thanks, our struggles, and our desire to be one. One hour a month in service to those who may embrace the gifts we have to offer. Try it on, if you have not already, and see perhaps what power might be discovered. A Special Note about Palm Sunday (Sunday, April 17) 8 a.m. Blessing of Palms and Holy Eucharist 9 a.m. 321Contact Service Blessing of Palms, Godly Play story, and Holy Eucharist 10:30 a.m. Blessing of Palms and Holy Eucharist We are delighted to have Bishop Paul as Celebrant and Preacher at all three Palm Sunday services!

3 PAGE 3 THE PARISH VISITOR VOLUME 69, ISSUE 8 Wading in the Water It is hard for me to believe that I am coming up on my second anniversary as Canon for the Ministry of the Baptized here at the cathedral. I can vividly remember my first service, on Palm Sunday, and how I wondered if I would ever figure out all the nuances of each liturgy, learn everyone s names, or find a grocery store in my new neighborhood. Two years later I mostly have the services and the shopping figured out, and not only know names but the faces, personalities, and stories of many of the members of this community. When I was first interviewing for this job, a wise older priest told me that it takes a minimum of three years to get to know a place, build relationships, and become a member of a community. I am amazed at how far I have already come in getting to know this place and exploring our vocations together, but I think he was right, and I look forward to reflecting on this little article in Lent of 2012 with another year behind of shared life behind us. I imagine I will laugh a bit at how little I knew now when compared to what I know then, but I suspect I will be just as thankful to God for bringing me to this place, and to this ministry, and to this constantly astonishing community of the Baptized. I hope that you are having a holy and blessed Lent. The Rev. Canon Mariclair Partee APRIL CATHEDRAL ARTS OUTING THE WHITMAN PIECE Written by Bill George Directed by Christopher Shorr Produced by Touchstone Theatre in collaboration with the Moravian College Theatre Company Performed at The Ice House The Whitman Piece tells the story of a small theatre company struggling to create a transcendent play about the great American poet, Walt Whitman, and the Civil War. It s a story of a people chasing a dream--the playwright holding to his sanity by a thread, artists fighting to create, a husband and wife trying to raise a family, as the wolf knocks at the door threatening the joy and beauty they seek to create. The recipient shall be continuing his or her education beyond high school. The Awards Committee is instructed to consider the applicant s scholarship, Christian service within the Cathedral, community service, and his or her need. This scholarship is intended to assist with the cost of higher education and honor the recipient for her or his achievement, commitment and service in church, school and community. If you have already received the Jon C. Norwine Scholarship, you are eligible to apply again. Applications are mailed in mid April. If you believe you qualify to be considered and want to ensure an application is mailed to you, please contact the Church office. The deadline for submission of an application for the Norwine Scholarship is Thursday, May 19.

6 PAGE 6 THE PARISH VISITOR VOLUME 69, ISSUE 8 Church School Grades 5-12 learn about Kajo-Keji As a two or three week Lenten project, the three J2A Church school classes (Rite 13, J2A and YAC) along with grade 5 are spending some time learning about Kajo Keji. The first thing they did was to get oriented as to where it actually is located on the continent of Africa, then in the country of Sudan, and since the January 2011 vote for independence, the soon to be Republic of South Sudan. If you want to follow this along with the youth, check out the information on the youth What s Happening? bulletin board in the Sayre entrance hall. After a geographical orientation, each grade was given an assignment. Grade 5 was tasked with making some comparison statements about the climate of Pennsylvania versus South Sudan, as well as the area and the type of land in each region. Rite 13 did some research on the three tribes living in Southern Sudan: the Dinka, the Bari, and the Kuku tribes. History was the topic for the J2A class using some printed reading material and a helpful video at The YAC group will provide the local tie to Kajo Keji, and specifically to the College and Cathedral at Romogi. Join us on the eve of Holy Week for SIGNS: The Gospel of John Saturday, April 16 at 7 PM in the Cathedral Actor Frank Runyeon returns to the cathedral to present his one-man play, staged with dramatic lighting and entertaining audience interaction. Its text is the first eleven chapters of the Gospel of John, translated into contemporary American speech. As characters and settings and lights constantly shift, the Gospel engages the audience s imaginations, surprises them with flashes of humor, and drives relentlessly forward with all the dramatic suspense you would expect from great theater. By the time the last candle is blown out, each audience member has a sense that they are part of the story that God is writing not simply spectators, that Jesus is a very real Presence among them. And that they have been called not only to witness these signs, but to respond to the Word they have heard, like Lazarus, by becoming a sign of that Life themselves. $12 adults, $8 children 12 and under. Childcare provided for children under 7. 7 PAGE 7 THE PARISH VISITOR VOLUME 69, ISSUE 8 UTO (United Thank Offering) INGATHERING May 14 & 15 The United Thank Offering is a personal and family devotional program of the Episcopal Church. It is the sum of our daily thanks for the blessing in our everyday lives for good weather, happy times, job opportunity, and unexpected visits there are so many things for which we can be thankful. At the very least, we can be thankful to God for blessings and take action by putting coins in the Blue Box. Twice a year we are asked to bring the amount of our daily thanksgiving for the ingathering, where it is combined with the offerings of hundreds of thousands of other Episcopalians to become the United Thank Offering. One-hundred percent of the donations collected during our ingathering are used to further the mission and ministry of the church. During our worship services on Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15, we will be having our UTO ingathering. Please use the UTO envelope in the service leaflet and place your gift into the collection plate. Take a moment each day to say thank you to God and put a coin in the Blue Box (take one from the table at the back of the church). We are not meant to be passive receivers; rather we are bid to be active participants in God s work in the world. Enlarge the circle of thankful people.
