St Peter's Church, Raunds Newsleer No. 9, March Welcome to the March issue of the newsleer. We are a year into the interregnum, and well into Lent. There are Lent lunches throughout the Benefice (Tuesday Raunds, Wednesday Ringstead and Thursday Stanwick ). It is bierly cold and winter seems slow to end. However the bulbs are star'ng to bloom - the Snowdrop Weekend at Chelveston was a great success -and this gives hope that Spring is not too far away. Rev Jon Aldwinkle and his wife Wendy are already ge,ng to know Raunds and we look forward to the Induc'on Service on April 22nd at 3pm. There will be a recep'on at the Saxon Hall a0erwards to which everyone is invited. The restora'on work should be finished before Jon s arrival, but once the work is completed, there will need to be a good clean up. So we will soon be calling on you to bring your polish and dusters along so that we can make the church sparkle ready for the welcome of our new incumbent. We should also not forget that one or two hardy volunteers have been working very hard over recent weeks sweeping up, mopping floors and polishing in order to make the place look respectable before Sunday services. We will also need help with the catering for the induc'on service and will require a number of items from each of the Benefice churches. If you are able to help, please would you write your name and the quan'ty you will donate on the list provided in Church. Items required include Sandwiches, Sausage Rolls, Vol au Vents, Cocktail Sausages, Plain Crisps, Scones, Cheese Scones, Tea Loaf, Small Cakes, Tray Bakes, Cherry Tomatoes, Cheese Straws and Shortbread If you have any contribu'ons for the next newsleer please send to or give to Judy (cawabs@aol.com) or Sue (sueclements@btopenworld.com) by the last Sunday in February.

St Peter s Church Services March / April 4 th Lent 3 11 th Mothering Sunday 18 th Lent 5 Passion'de 25 th Lent 6 Palm Sunday 1 st Easter Sunday 8th Easter a.m a.m. Morning Worship a.m. (A.GM.) a.m. Benefice Service of All Hallows, Hargrave a.m. Mothers' Union On Tuesday 20th Rev Graham Bell gave a talk to MU members about journeys and, in par'cular, Ernest Shackleton's aempted journey to the South Pole. Graham recently went on a trip to Antarc'ca, the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, visi'ng many of the places that Shackleton had called at in his aempt to get across Antarc'ca and then in rescuing his men a0er his ship, the Endurance, became trapped and crushed in pack ice. Graham supplemented his talk with slides of the stunning scenery, including huge icebergs and Shackleton's grave in South Georgia. Also hundreds of penguins posing for a group photo! Our next mee'ng is on Tuesday 20 th March and will be a Lent Litany given by Mrs Kay Short. All are welcome and further details from Judy.

Second Hard Hat Tour 15 th February 2018 As with the first Hard Hat Tour, this was very well aended with over 40 people from Church, Town and beyond. John Ruddy (Lead Consultant) gave a talk on the repairs already carried out, those s'll to be completed and why these repairs became necessary. Works already completed are the underpinning, the wall pain'ngs and clock conserva'on, drainage and the Cintec 'e works. Work con'nues with masonry repairs, plastering and the glazing restora'on (off site). Works s'll to be completed include further drainage work, fit steel arch, plumbing and carpentry repairs and refit the windows. John Ruddy was also available to answer any ques'ons regarding the Project. It is likely that the comple'on date will need to be delayed due to further necessary drainage works, the amount of excavated remains found and the inclement weather condi'ons. Light refreshments were available and enjoyed by all who aended. A further 3 Hard Hat Tours will need to be arranged to sa'sfy the condi'ons of the grant received from the Heritage Loery Fund. It is hoped that one of these can be on a Saturday, for those who are unable to aend on a weekday. Maureen Windust Tea with Friends This is a chance to catch up with old friends, meet new friends, have a game of scrabble, cards or dominoes over a cup of tea and cake on the first and third Wednesday of each month (March 1st, 15th). It is held in St Peter's Community Enterprise Centre from 2.15 'll 4pm. There is a charge of 1 to cover costs, and an occasional raffle. All are most welcome and li0s can be arranged if needed. 4 Ginny Pledger Child & Family Worker February has been a busy month with the schools with lots of different ac'vi'es going on. Below is a summary of the events over the month Sywell CEVA Primary School Assembly Shena Bell and I were invited into Sywell school to discuss the role of the church within the community. The children were very engaging and displayed brilliant examples of how the church is there for much, much more than just a Sunday morning worship. We received very posi've feedback from the school and the children really enjoyed par'cipa'ng in the Assembly. I would invite you all to prayer for their parish as they have a new incumbent star'ng next month, so it s exci'ng 'mes all round. Stanwick Assembly The theme was Perseverance, we looked at Nehemiah, not only how he had to persevere but also how he encouraged others to persevere even when the task ahead looked impossible. Pancake Morning, Hargrave my goodness me, I don t think I have ever cooked so many pancakes in one go. I think we fed the whole of Hargrave, including a few builders too! It was a wonderful morning and Hargrave raised which is being donated to Water Aid; so well done everyone, great effort Stanwick Assembly The theme was Honesty, we looked at the Cadbury family and how they went over and above what was expected of them with regards to honesty and fairness and how we can apply the same principles in our lives to do God s work. We then had a True or False Chocolate quiz. Did you know that the Cadbury factory can produce 1.5 million Crème Eggs every day! Stanwick RE Lesson Year 1 children invited me to go into their RE lessons to discuss Jesus. They asked some brilliant and insightul ques- 'ons such as, why is Jesus important to me? Why do I go to church? What did Jesus look like? We acted out the parable of The Sower and then we planted cress together. Some of the children were very disappointed that the cress had not grown instantly!! Knied Mary s please see separate ar'cle. Golden Ticket, Ringstead tonight is Ringstead s Golden Ticket event, hopefully the weather won t put the children off. We are all set of another evening of fun, food and games. I ll let you all know next month how it goes. Un'l next month, God bless, Ginny Pledger

Friends of St Peter s Do you like jigsaws? The Friends of St. Peter's Church are hoping to hold a puzzle event this year and need people to make the jigsaws (which will be delivered, then collected when completed). Please contact Nuala (Tel ) or Ann (Tel ) Ann Webster (secretary) Raunds Food Bank and Community Cafe The people of Raunds and Thrapston have overwhelmed us with their generosity over the Christmas period, and we were able to give out over 20 Christmas hampers, as well as the regular food parcels. Our thanks, in par'cular, include Park Infant School for making Christmas cards, Manor School for the Christmas boxes, the Angel kniers and many individuals (especially Henry and Ade), as well as Raunds and Thrapston Co-Ops, Tesco Express with Fareshare and Holloway Farm for their weekly dona'ons. This month we would like to thank Raj Mini Market in Marshalls Road for dona'ng their old stock to the Foodbank, as part of their refurbishment. It is great that local businesses are helping us, so, in return, please support them. I would also like to thank our regular customers at the Cafe. Without them we wouldn't be able to offer such a good service to our clients. The cafe and Foodbank are open on Thursday mornings from 9.30 'll 12 noon. Judy

Kniers of Raunds We know how much you love kni,ng. So, we don t hove just one new project for you WE HAVE TWO! Knied Mary s a0er the success of the knied angels last year in which we distributed over 1,000 angels across the Benefice, we have decided to knit Mary this year. Big thank you to Sue Harris for adap'ng the angel paern. Kni,ng paerns have now gone out to each church in the Benefice so if you would like to get involved please feel free to take a paern and pass it along to any friends or rela'ves that you know who knit. Let s see if we can beat last year s total! (see aached for a copy of the paern or pick one up from any of our churches) Poppies As part of the commemora'ons of the centenary of the end of World War One, the Royal Bri'sh Legion and the Town Council are looking to create an installa'on of knied poppies.. Final details have not yet been decided, but we do know that we will need lots of poppies, so now is the 'me to get started. The more that we have, the beer the display will be. Paerns will be available in Church or we can them to you. Contact Stephen Clements for more details Stephen_clements@b'nternet.com. P.S. If you can crochet, don t feel le0 out. We have crochet paerns as well.

VISIT TO NICK BAYLISS (ARCHITECTURAL GLASS) LTD. February 16 th St Peter s PCC and the Project Team were asked by the Lead Consultant of the restora'on work, John Ruddy, if some members were interested in seeing the restora'on work on the Good Shepherd window which was being carried out by Nick Bayliss and his team at his workshop in Birmingham. Three members, together with two wives went along on Friday February 16 th to have a look. The actual premises were in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham and were very quaint old buildings built possibly in the Victorian era. Inside the workshop it was small and narrow with uneven floors, the building was over three floors with very steep steps leading up to the other levels. Three or four people were working on the windows, one being Nick s son. The company which has been in existence for many years restoring these types of windows are very experienced in this work. I am sure most people are aware of our Good Shepherd Window, which is just inside the South Door round to the le0, behind the Font. This window was taken out a few years ago as a result of the movement to the west end of the Church, which was causing more damage to it. The window was given to the Church in 1906, by the parishioners of Raunds and is one of the most colourful windows we have. We saw parts of the window being worked on in Birmingham and they have produced a full size drawing of it because they had not seen it in the Church, it was delivered to them in a storage case. They are cleaning the coloured panes with special liquid, and refi,ng the panes where necessary. They have many sizes of lead window pieces, in special sec'ons, which they may need to use to fix the panes again. In some cases it will be necessary to put in new pieces of glass, and they have an extensive range of glass of all colours, some very old, some new which they can use. It is intended that the window should be completed to coincide with the finishing of the building work which is going on. One thing is certain, a0er seeing some of the window which has been restored and cleaned, when it is refied, it will be a very bright window, looking brand new. Mike J Turner

Higham Deanery Synod The last mee'ng was held in February at St Peters Church, Irthlingborough. The speakers were from Northamptonshire County Council's Foster Team. They spoke about the problems they face. There are currently 1080 children in care in Northamptonshire and ever increasing, (last November was 1000) but only 300 foster carers. This means children are being placed in foster homes as far away as Yorkshire. The reasons for the increase are varied but include neglect, abuse, poverty and lack of parental skills. There are also dedicated team members who work with families to keep children with their parents. The purpose of talking to groups such as Synod, is to ask for your prayers and to give support to any known foster carers as the church can be like an extended family. The next mee'ng will be on Tuesday 12th June at Hargrave and the speaker is Rachael Newman from Spurgeons. In October Helen Allen will be talking about her work as Opera'ons Manager at East Northants Community Services ( Rushden Night Shelter, Food Bank, Recovery House etc.). These mee'ngs are open to everyone so if a subject is of interest do please come along. Further details from Judy. AGM This year s Church AGM will take place on Sunday the 18th March. In order to take an ac've part, you will need to be registered on the church electoral roll. A copy of the electoral roll is available in Church. Please check that your name is included. If you wish to be added to the roll or have any ques'ons, please contact Judy Heuser (Tel ) or Ann Webster (Tel ). For more informa'on on St Peter's Church have a look at the benefice website
