There will be a service at with Ashing and this is followed in the evening with a service at with Ashing. Lent is a.me for self-reflec.on. Recent news has given us a lot to think of and reflect on. There has been a new President of America bringing in new rules and regula.ons which are affec.ng many people. This is a country that prides itself on freedom but is now threatening to close its doors to various groups of people. Our own Government has axed a refugee scheme that was helping 350 children, leaving them more vulnerable than ever. General Synod voted not to take note of a report by the House of Bishops on Marriage and Same Sex Rela.onships which has hurt many people and lei those outside the church seeing the Church of England as an exclusive club. All of these things have one thing in common which we can think about in Lent. How do we as individuals accept people who aren t quite like ourselves and have different opinions and beliefs from us? What do we think about banning groups of people from a country or withdrawing aid to children who are in a far worse situa.on than our own grandchildren, or making a gay couple feel unwelcome in church? What does that say about a person who claims to be a Chris.an? These are just three issues that have come up recently in the news, I am sure that we can all think of other examples. Lent, our prepara.on for the death and resurrec.on of Christ, is not meant to be an easy.me. We need to challenge ourselves. Do any of the above issues make us feel annoyed one way or another? There may be people reading this who have views both for and against the arguments. There was a.me in this country when slavery was accepted. Thankfully this happens no longer but there is s.ll a legacy of racism throughout the country where white people see themselves as superior to blacks. In ci.es with a diverse popula.on such as Manchester, mostly people get on well together but occasionally people are singled out for abuse. When this has happened on a tram for instance, thankfully people have recorded the incident and the vic.m supported with evidence when the perpetrator was taken to court. What would we do on that tram?..s.ck up for the vic.m or be pleased that someone else is saying what we are thinking? Jesus didn t teach hatred, Jesus taught love. This season of Lent is a good opportunity to think how we can apply His teaching. It doesn t necessarily mean that we have to agree. So if a gay couple came into church, we might not agree with their way of life but we can agree to disagree and welcome them into the fold of God s love and accept them for who they are. If a refugee child came to Easingwold, he or she should be accepted and loved in the community as any other child. Jesus paid the ul.mate sacrifice for our sins with his death upon the cross, He died because we sin, and because he loves us, it is only fair that we look at how we can love others. 9 Every blessing for a reflec.ve Lent, Margaret 2

We intend to provide the following singers for the Deanery Choir on 2 April: sopranos..altos.tenors basses Operaon Christmas Child Sue Hanson has wri(en on behalf of the Local Collec.on Team to thank us all for Easingwold s contribu.on to the Shoebox Appeal. Our area covers Harrogate, Ripon, Thirsk & Easingwold. This year 3,083 boxes were collected from churches, schools and businesses in this area. The boxes were then processed on the outskirts of Leeds before being shipped to their final des.na.on. The team in Leeds handled 17,109 boxes! The des.na.ons of these boxes were Liberia, Belarus and Ukraine. We have sent to Belarus and Ukraine before but this is the first.me our boxes have gone to Africa. In the last twenty years Liberia has suffered two civil wars in which half a million people were killed or displaced. Currently 85% of the popula.on live below the interna.onal poverty line and an addi.onal blight has been the recent Ebola epidemic! If you are able to watch any of the videos on the Samaritan s Purse website you will see what joy the boxes bring to deprived children, It seems that even in deepest Africa woolly hats are a great success!! Many thanks to all who have contributed in some way to this project.
