Kathy will be working in the office 3 days a week and is anxious to assist you in any way she can. Kathy and her husband Jeff have been part of the Trinity family for many, many years. 4 PUTTING ONE S FAITH TO WORK Recently, we celebrated the life of the so-called Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, who sang about respect and being all woman. She was the daughter of a very well-known Detroit minister, the Rev. C. L. Franklin, who was friends with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Aretha grew up in the church, where she sang hymns and gospel songs. As a young woman, she joined the likes of Mahalia Jackson, Marian Anderson, Harry Belafonte, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger, and others who raised money to support the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and beyond. She often paid the bail for jailed demonstrators, most notably that of Angela Davis (who was eventually acquitted of all charges). She died August 16 at 76 years of age. Two days later, another international figure passed away at 80, namely Kofi Annan. Kofi was born in the British Gold Coast (now Ghana) in As a youngster, he attended a Methodist school. Eventually, he studied in St. Paul, Minnesota, at Macalester as well as in Cambridge at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For most of his adult life, he was employed at and/or associated with the United Nations. From 1997 to 2006, Annan was the Secretary General of that organization. In 2001, he was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize along with the UN itself. Although roundly criticized for his slow response to the disaster between the Hutus and the Tutsis in Rwanda which he regretted for the rest of his life Annan will be primarily remembered as an impassioned international statesman. If you do not know about him, I guarantee his life would be worth investigating! Annual Meeting Attention UMW! The NC District s Annual Meeting is scheduled for September 15th from 9:00 am 2:00 pm in Garner, IA. This is an important meeting for all women to attend, particularly UMW officers. Mark your calendars early and please plan to be there. ***Attention High School Drivers*** Being a member of TUMC, you are entitled to park in our church parking lot during the school week. 6 THE LIFE & LETTERS OF PAUL There can be no gainsaying the fact that Saul of Tarsus became the greatest apostle. Though he coexisted during the lifespan of Jesus, he lived an appreciable distance away in the Roman Empire. He was Jewish like the Messiah, but he was steeped in the Greco-Roman culture, which was a far cry from the peasantry of Galilee. Like most figures in the Bible, we cannot piece together the entire life of the apostle, for there are no full biographies therein. But scholars have been able to engage in historical analysis by perusing a variety of sources that help to add flesh to the skeletal outline the biblical witness provides. When Saul converted to the new faith after encountering Jesus on the Damascus Road, he had been persecuting followers of Jesus. At the time, he believed that the early Christians were lying about the resurrection and did not buy that Jesus was the Anointed One of God that was coming at the time of Judgment. With his conversion, he repented of his persecution of Christians and became himself the object of harassment and abuse throughout the rest of his life as the messenger to the Gentiles. Since the 19 th century, scholars have worked to understand the important figures of early Christianity. Apart from Jesus, Paul has been the most studied leader of the new faith. People such as the famous doctor Albert Schweitzer, scholars like Rudolf Bultmann, and ministers such as Bishop John Shelby Spong, have sought to put together the puzzle of Paul s biography. One of the common threads woven by historicalcritical analysis of the sources is that the thirteen letters attributed to Paul were not all from Paul. Only seven are authentic letters from Paul: Romans; 1 Corinthians; 2 Corinthians; Galatians; Philippians; 1 Thessalonians; and Philemon. Consequently, when one wants to articulate the apostle s theology and ethics, one must peruse these letters and not the others. The pastorals (1 Timothy; 2 Timothy; Titus) are commonly regarded as definitely not from the hand or mind of Paul. The majority of students of the Greek scriptures (i.e., New Testament) do not consider Ephesians to be genuine either, whereas there is still some disagreement over Colossians and 2 Thessalonians. This fall, we will go on a wonderful journey exploring the life and letters of Paul. We will learn as much as we can about the apostle while we focus on what is considered the last of his (authentic) letters, Romans. Come and enjoy the fun!

7 (This is from a Facebook post. Author unknown.) Making a Child Go To Church Recently, a mother asked me, Should I make my son go to church? I answered, Yes, definitely. Then I explained: What do you say when your son decides that he does not want to go to school? What did you do when he was little and did not want to take a bath? How did you react when he was sick and did not want his medicine? Every right-thinking parent recognizes the importance of these matters and gives the child no opportunity to decide for himself. Instead, parents explain the importance of going to school, taking a bath, or taking medicine when sick. So, mom and dad, take time to explain the importance of going to church; then simply say to your son or daughter, In our family we all go to church and that includes you. Train up a child in the way he should go (Proverbs 22:6) **CHILI TAILGATER** The Dodgers football team hosts their first home game of the season on Friday, September 14th. We d like to start the season off with a Chili Tailgater here at the church. Come and enjoy a bowl of chili and a cinnamon roll before the game. We ll be serving from 4:30-7:00 pm.
