3 * SUNDAY REFLECTIONS * DESPERATION People visit a doctor for a variety of reasons. Some go because they have severe pain or a condition that does not seem to be improving on its own. Others go to manage a chronic disease like diabetes. Still others visit a doctor because their school or job requires a physical examination or proof of immunization. Some go at the urging of a relative or friend. Others go because they are looking for reassurance about their health. And certain people make an appointment because dealing with a doctor provides a moment of human interaction in an otherwise lonely day. But whatever their motivation, doctors do their best to deal with the individuals who arrive seeking their help. In our Gospel this weekend we hear of two people who go to Jesus Jairus, a synagogue official with a dying daughter, and an unnamed woman suffering with hemorrhages. But what motivated those two people to seek out Jesus? Was it faith? Was it a desire for a miracle? Was it the reports they had heard about the healing power of Jesus? Was it the fear of death? Was it a father s love for his child? Certainly it could have been any of those things. But there was another reason and perhaps it was the main reason. They went to Jesus out of desperation. Jairus had to be desperate to go to Jesus. Jairus was a synagogue official, a respected member of the religious establishment whose members were already voicing concerns about the rabbi from Nazareth. The Pharisees and the Herodians were talking about putting him to death (Mark 3:6), and the scribes from Jerusalem claimed Jesus was possessed by Beelzebul. (Mark 3:22) Desperate to save his dying daughter, Jairus risks criticism and ridicule from his fellow religious leaders, and even a possible No from Jesus, when he comes to plead for help. My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live. A desperate parent will do anything to save a child. The woman who had been suffering with hemorrhages for twelve years was certainly desperate. She had suffered greatly at the hands of many doctors and had spent all that she had. Yet she was not helped but only grew worse. She was at the end of her rope. She had tried everything else, why not try Jesus? In both cases, Jesus responded to the needs of these desperate people. A daughter was raised from her deathbed before her distraught father. And for the first time in twelve years, a woman felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. Sunday s Gospel reading reminds us that Jesus did not question the motivation of those who came seeking his help. It made no difference if they were led by faith, by love, by concern, by hunger, by pain, by fear, or by desperation. Jesus responded to their needs. The response of Jesus was based not on what was in their hearts, but rather on what was in his. The same remains true today. Jesus stands ready to receive people with mercy and love even if they come to him only out of desperation. As his Church, we have to do the same! 2015 Rev. Thomas B. Iwanowski, Looking To Sunday
4 * NEWS FROM IMMACULATE CONCEPTION * FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION FOR GRADES 1-8 FOR FAITH FORMATION IS NOW OPEN! Registration is open for Grades 1-8. Registration forms can be found on our website or by contacting the Rectory at SUMMER FAITH SHARING The Pastors of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Washington Township and St. Andrew s Parish of Westwood are sponsoring a summer faith experience which is open to all parishes and local communities, on Thursday evenings, at 7:00 PM. July 26: Is being a good person enough to get you into heaven? / Where am I on my journey to the Kingdom of God? August 2: How to let go and let God take control of your life. Do you allow the Holy Spirit to impact your life? August 9: The impact of evil in our society and how it affects our everyday lives. August 16:How to change your life by reading the Bible. Location: Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Sullivan Center, Rackley Room, 668 Ridgewood Road, Twp of Washington. Refreshments provided. For info or to register, please call: Brigid or midt@me.com. KIDS CORNER SUMMERTIME Summertime and the living is easy. That s what the favorite old song says. The living may be easy, but often the giving is not. Summer collections often drop significantly in our parish because of vacation travel, sports schedules and other activities that cause parishioners to attend Mass in other parishes. If you would like to make your giving easy and consistent this summer, please consider our electronic giving option. Currently 10 parish families are using this simple and secure way to make and track their parish giving. If you would like to learn more, please contact Canice Cristofoletti at on Thursdays, or check out our website at iccnorwood.org/give-online. Are You Going On Vacation? Many of our parish families are planning to get away for some summer fun and relaxation in the next few months. We pray that your vacation time will be safe and a source of many happy memories. However, please do not take your parish offering with you. Each summer our parish office struggles to juggle the bills as Sunday offerings decrease significantly. If you find that you tend to forget your envelope more often during the less structured weeks of summer, please consider our electronic giving program. Go to It s simple! It s safe! And it keeps God at the top of your giving list even when you are away! CHILDREN S LITURGY Many hands make light work! In order to continue this wonderful program, additional volunteers are needed. The more volunteers we have the less frequently any one person is needed. We will work with your schedule! Volunteers must complete a 3- hour training program given at convenient locations. If you can be of help please contact Pam Delaportas at pd3773@yahoo.com. POPE FRANCIS INTENTINS FOR JULY Evangelization: Priests and their Pastoral Ministry: That priests who experience fatigue and loneliness in their pastoral work, may find help and comfort in their intimacy with the Lord and in their friendship with their brother priests.
