3 Dear Sisters and Brothers: John the Baptist is one of those people to whom you have no other choice but to pay attention too. He is no mealy-mouthed, pablum prophet, but one who alerts you to what is important in life. He arrives on the scene much like Tyra Banks introducing to the judges of America s Got Talent or how back in the day when Paul Shaffer mc d for David Letterman. The band strikes up full blast and David appears while Paul more or less fades away. * SUNDAY REFLECTIONS * John s only job was to fade away to make room for the Christ. He knew that the spotlight had to shine on Jesus who would bring true liberation. It s fair to say that most people like to be at the center of attention sometime in their lives. We enjoy recognition and affirmation. That s what trophies, medals, and awards are all about. Millions watch the Olympics to see who will get the prize. We crave seeing people at the hub of events. We like heroes. John the Baptist, although not mentioned in many verses in Scripture, has captivated the imagination of many an artist. Outside of Jesus and Mary, he appears in Catholic iconography more than any other biblical figure. Maybe people have a fascination with him because he is so different. John captured the allegiance of thousands of people who thought he was the messiah. He must have been a magnetic personality like Fr. Tim. Yet his humility continued to say, One greater than I is to come. John stands in stark contrast to Jesus. John was austere and foreboding. Jesus was welcoming and forgiving. You would not invite John to your Christmas party--he would arrive in loincloth and sandals and refuse to share your wine and probably lay a guilt trip on you for having fun. Jesus would feel comfortable eating and drinking with you. In fact he performed some of his most forgiving acts around food and drink. Different men, different ways of proclaiming God s forgiveness. This weekend John teaches each of us a good lesson. Sometimes we must look to others as the source of our hope and salvation. We cannot save ourselves. Left to our own devices, we concoct war and violence, disregard the poor, enhance the coffers of the rich, and turn our backs on impoverished immigrants. John teaches us to pray for people who warm up the audience, then step out of the way to clear a path for those who shine a clearer light and show God to us. Peace and Blessings, Fr. Leo It is no accident that the feast day of John the Baptist comes around the summer solstice when light begins to decrease, symbolizing John s own statement that he must decrease in importance to make way for the Light of the World, Jesus, born near the winter solstice when light begins to increase.

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS THIS WEEKEND This year our parish will conduct the annual collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious on the weekend of December 8-9, Traditionally, women and men religious served for small stipends that did not include retirement benefits. Today, many religious communities lack adequate retirement savings. At the same time, health-care costs have risen dramatically while the number of religious able to serve in compensated ministry has declined. These financial needs of the Religious continue to call upon the generosity of our people. Every year the National Collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious has a life-giving impact on religious by providing for them the financial assistance, education and service needed to continue the vital support of their aging religious and communities. Both religious men and women in our own archdiocese have been beneficiaries of this collection during the past year. Please remember to make your donation for the PARISH and not to the Retirement Office. Such a procedure will ensure that our parish will receive credit for all donations. On behalf of the women and men religious of our archdiocese, especially our own Sr. Elizabeth, I thank you for your cooperation and generosity. Please be assured of my continued gratitude and prayers for you and your loved ones. And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value (PHILIPPIANS 1:9-10) Help us make this a special Christmas for those less fortunate. Immaculate Conception is again sponsoring our Giving Tree for St. Paul of the Cross. The tree will be up December 2nd, the first Sunday of Advent. Besides clothing, gift certificates to ShopRite, Wal-Mart or Target are welcome. Please wrap gifts with the tag on the outside. We will also collect hats for Tomorrow s Children cancer patients. Hats should be sized for babies to young adults and placed unwrapped in the basket that will be in the vestibule. Gifts need to be returned by the last Mass on Sunday, December 16th. Can you find it in your heart to take one or two tags from the tree to bring joy to someone this Christmas? God Bless You for your generosity! RICHES Riches are the instrument of all vices, because they render us capable of putting even our worst desires into execution. St. Ambrose Glittery holiday ads can blind us to our stewardship values and distort our needs and wants. It is important that during this season of endless buying we remember that each of us also has the need to give back to God and to those that are in need.
