1 Saint Sophia HERALD Volume 13 Number 2 Many Lives...One Heart February 2008 Lord we offer Unto You On January 13th, our Cathedral Parish launched the 2008 stewardship financial support drive. The Parish Council and stewardship committee treated parishioners in the Fellowship Hall with words of encouragement in giving, and with sweet loukoumades and coffee, a traditional Greek treat. The sweetness of the loukoumades and the fellowship we shared only accented the true sweet spirit of giving. All giving must be born from a spirit of love. It is in that sweet spirit of love that we ask you, our beloved parishioners and brothers and sisters in Christ, to make your best and most generous pledge to our collective ministry for this year. I can quote from scripture to make the point over and over. But essentially it is you, in prayerful consideration that infuses the ministry with loving support to not only turn on the lights in our buildings, but to most especially turn on the light of Christ to our community. I got a chuckle out of the following stewardship related anecdote and I wanted to share it with you. A very wealthy man in the community was not known for his generosity to the church. The church was involved in its stewardship program so the fund-raising committee decided they had to pay him a visit. As they met with him, they said that in view of his considerable resources they were sure that he would like to make a substantial contribution to this program. I see, he said, so you have it all figured out, have you? In the course of your investigation did you discover that I have a widowed mother who has no other means of support but me? No, they responded, they did not know that. Did you know that I have a sister who was left by a drunken husband with five children and no means to provide for them? No, they said, we did not know that either. Well, sir, did you know also that I have a brother who is crippled due to an automobile accident and can never work another day to support his wife and family? Embarrassingly, they responded, no sir, we did not know that either. Well, he thundered triumphantly, I ve never given any of them a cent so why should I give anything to you? So, people live life this way. And they will reap what they sow. Only those who love the church and believe in that for which it stands can be expected to support it with their stewardship. If Christians do not direct a good portion of their stewardship to the life and work of the church, no one else will not the disinterested person, not the community charity funds and certainly not the state. 2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE THE PARISH COUNCIL IS A MINISTRY The president was preparing to exit Air Force One on an official visit. Before exiting the plane he took what seemed like a very long time checking his appearance in the mirror first his hair, then his tie, and then his suit. When an aid teased him about his vanity, the president replied, When I go out that door, I m not just a man I am the United States of America. In much the same way, parish council members represent their parish and the Orthodox Christian faith. As leaders of the community, parish council members are on the front lines and are able to have a positive long term effect on their parish. To serve on the parish council is a ministry and those who serve are called to represent Christ to all whom they meet in all aspects of life. MISSION OF THE PARISH COUNCIL The mission of the parish as defined in the Uniform Parish Regulations and therefore the mission of the Parish Council is to keep, practice and proclaim the Orthodox Christian Faith pure and undefiled. In the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, the rich Man walked by poor Lazarus everyday. The Rich Man didn t hate Lazarus he just ignored him, committing the sin of indifference. The opposite of love is not hate. The opposite of love is indifference. We have been blessed with great treasures of the faith and Lazarus lies at our gate. Lazarus is the visitor that walks through the doors of our church on Sunday morning. Lazarus is the non-orthodox spouse. Lazarus is the lapsed Orthodox Christian visiting the parish after a long absence. Like the Rich Man in the parable, we often walk right by without noticing, and they eat from the crumbs that fall from our table. If we believe that in Orthodoxy we have the fullness of the Truth, then we have the great responsibility the Great Commission to share it with everyone. Keep me from the fatal habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and every occasion. Release me from craving to straighten out everybody s affairs. Make me thoughtful but not moody; helpful but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom it seems a pity not to use it all, but thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details; give me wings to get to the point. Seal my lips on my aches and pains. They are increasing and the love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. I dare not ask for grace enough to enjoy the tales of others pains, but help me to endure them with patience. I dare not ask for improved memory, but for a growing humility and lessening cocksureness when my memory seems to clash with the memory of others. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a saint. Some of them are so hard to live with, but a sour old person is one of the crowning works of the devil. Give me the ability to see good things in unexpected people. And give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them so. Amen

5 Dear Ladies, Philoptohos is doing great, and all the members are working hard to achieve a very successful year. January is our Membership Month. You have already received the membership renewal letter, and many members answered promptly. Please check your mail and remember to send in your dues for Don t forget that February is the month when we choose our Mother of the Year. Applications are already available in the office. Please feel free to use them! On Thursday, February 21 we will have our Evening Assembly Meeting at the home of Helen Stathatos in San Marino. We will mail you the details shortly. This year s Vassilopita was a great success. All the members of the Philoptohos board served as the Vassilopita committee, and I extend my warmest thanks and congratulations for a job well done. Our Evening with Friends event honoring Harry Pappas surpassed all of our expectations, both monetarily and attendance. This is a great testimony to our honoree. Sunday, February 24 Pitsa Bonorris, Marion Maniatakos, Penny Rovas, Rebecca Rovas, George Rovas and Peter Rovas OBITUARY Mary Fondas Brown Born to Gus and Margaret Fondas in Youngstown, Ohio, Mary was a sister to Ann Titangos and Christopher G. Fondas. In 1959, she was married to Buddy C. Brown, until he passed away in Both Mary and Buddy were the entrepreneurs along with Mary and Chris Fondas, of Buddy Brown Toys in Studio city, CA. She loved children and enjoyed each and every one of them, as they browsed the aisles filled with toys and delight. She was a devout Christian who served God through her church, St. Sophia Cathedral. She was the first woman president of the Parish Council, a Sunday school teacher, and summer camp counselor. Mary died on January 8, We shall miss her greatly, but find comfort in the knowledge that she is now with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Her memory will be with us in our hearts, eternally.
